I liked cats until today. I was walking my two Cavaliers home when this big tabby darted out of a bush swiping and hissing at the dogs. The dogs looked at it, ignored it and we kept walking. Next thing I hear hissing so I turned around and it was following us swiping, hissing and growling at the dogs who were walking beside me and getting a bit antsy. I turned around yelling and ran at it thinking I'd scare it off. Nope, it just kept coming at us hissing, growling and swiping. I thought the only thing I could do to get rid of it was to deliver a kick but it deftly avoided my foot. I have a dodgy knee and walk in a brace so there would be no energy in the kick, had it connected. I pulled the dogs right next to me with their leads so tight I was just about choking the poor things as I tried to scare this cat away. It followed us past three houses, all the time hissing and swiping at the back end of the dogs. It only stopped when I went into my driveway. I put the dogs inside and went out to do battle with this damn cat who was still sitting at the footpath end of the driveway. As soon as it saw me coming it took off. Now I'm wary. I don't feel safe walking my dogs past the house where the cat lives. I live in a court so can't get out of my street any other way. Crossing the street won't work, the cat sometimes sits on the nature strip on the other side of the road. How do I protect my dogs from this cat. One of them is deaf and they're both gentle and wouldn't retaliate if the cat managed to claw them. I don't want my dogs losing an eye or getting injured by this cat. Help! Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Seeking Advice For An Itchy Dog.
cavNrott replied to Ben and Jerry's topic in General Dog Discussion
My Cav was scratching like mad a a couple of weeks ago, driving himself and me nuts. He was scratching as close as he could get to his abdomen and having a bit of a nibble as well. His skin looked quite pink but there was no broken skin. Because he never scratches I took him to the vet who gave him an antihistamine shot and Pred. tablets on a reducing dose for 5 days. The vet said a lot of dogs and cats are coming in with an inhaled (probable) pollen allergy. This is in Melbourne. He didn't scratch at all after the antihistamine shot but I gave him a low dose of Pred for a couple of days just to be sure. It might be worth getting an antihistamine shot for your boy. That looks itchy!! -
Possible Vaccination Reaction?
cavNrott replied to poochmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My Cav boy had a nasty reaction to his 16 month C5 Booster. He had projectile diarrhoea like I'd never seen before. Vet prescribed Metronidazole if I remember rightly. He came good within a couple of days. He's 7 1/2yo now and I've never vaccinated him again. He coped with the puppy vaccinations ok but the 16 month booster was a shocker. If we have an outbreak of Parvo in the area I'll vacc. him with Parvac killed virus, but never again with an attenuated live vaccine. My Cav girl had no after effects of the vaccination but the C5 vaccination itself caused her some distress. She was whining and rolling around on her back on the floor for a couple of minutes. It must have been stinging. Strangely the vet vaccinated her near the rump instead of the usual back of the neck. She's never been vaccinated since and she's now almost 6 1/2yo. -
I just saw this sad post. I'm so sorry you lost your beautiful boy. R.I.P. Jack.

My son works in the Bayswater area, he's in transport so always out and about. He's working today so I'll give him a call and ask him to keep an eye out for Nelson. -
What Is The Most Popular Colour In Your Breed?
cavNrott replied to Esky the husky's topic in General Dog Discussion
With Cavaliers the most popular colour seems to be Blenheim. My 2 Cavs are Tri and Blk/tan. I'm not really a fan of Blenheim -
Same here. I do not want my dogs to have an empty stomach for 24 hours and I wouldn't feed their whole daily ration in one meal. Bloat!!!

No she won't get the gum off by licking it. You have to rub the peanut butter in, or on, as the case may be.
-
If you read the thread all will be revealed.
-
Try peanut butter, rubbed in well. She'll probably be too busy trying to lick the peanut butter off to worry about being foot sensitive. The peanut butter worked well when my Rottie had gum on her back. I have no idea how it got there

How do you figure that? What do you consider to be a decent food?

Dry Food Produced By Aussie Guy - Can't Remember

This is interesting. I have organic cold pressed Coconut oil here and I have a Cavalier who appears in the last 10 days to have developed an allergy to something unknown. He's scratching and never has before. Definitely no fleas and his skin on the abdomen looks more pink than usual. This dog is 11kg and 1 Tblspn seems a lot for a little dog. How much do you think I should give him? I'll start him on a smaller amount with his breakfast tomorrow and await your advice before increasing the amount of coconut oil. -
Twice a day here for large and small breeds. They also get a small serve of live culture yoghurt and goats milk just before bedtime.

Eardrops For A Bloodhound Who Hates Them
cavNrott replied to MsKatie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have my two dogs running to me and sitting waiting for their ear drops. Reason being that they love 4x2 biscuits and they know a biscuit is coming right after the drops. Warm the ear drops before putting them in the ears, cold ear drops would be really uncomfortable. I carry the drops in my pocket for about 20 minutes or warm them to body temperature in warm water. -
The liquid one has done the job for my Cavs. At 7 1/2yo and 61/2yo their teeth are still in excellent shape. They've never had a dental done. The Proden PlaqueOff received such good reviews from the folk on here that I've decided to switch over and give it a try. Both dogs are getting a tiny spoonful with their dinner each night. I'll keep a keen watch on their teeth. If I see any sign of plaque I'll put them back on the liquid product.

Ollie was such a gentle, nice looking boy. I can't believe he's no longer with us Jodie. He sure put up a good fight for a long time. Ruffles I agree. It's 3 years now since I lost Sophie and I don't think I'll ever come to terms with her not being with me. I think the painful raw grief eases with time but missing her never goes away.

If it is yeast you will smell it. Yeast has a fairly strong sickly rather sweet kind of smell. Once you've smelled yeasty ears you will always recognise the smell. Good idea to go to the vet and have the ears swabbed.

Cranberry can prevent a UTI by stopping bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder/urinary tract but it won't cure an existing UTI, only antibiotics will. My Cavaliers all get a Cranberry 5000 tablet every night with dinner and they've never had a UTI. My Rottie girl had a UTI on a couple of occasions when she was young. Then I started her on Cranberry tablets every night and she never had another UTI.

My Cavalier ruptured a disk in his spine and had surgery. He was paralysed from the shoulders down. I'm not sure how similar this is to your Kelpie but my boy made a complete recovery. Has your dog had a myelogram to assess the damage? Is she able to walk at all?

I think the Troy product is a liquid plaque remover like the one I was using. Not the Proden granulated seaweed product.

I don't have a link but I bought it from a UK seller on Ebay. Pet-Net-Shop-Limited. Type in ProDen Plaque Off in the search bar if you go to Ebay and that should bring it up for you.
-
Mine arrived today without any hassle with AQIS. I noticed the seller had written 'gift' in the details section of the package. Did you get yours yet Anniek or are customs still giving you the runaround?
-
I'm going to try the ProDen product. I've been using the liquid product for years and the dogs teeth are clean. They've never needed a dental which is pretty good for 7 1/2yo and 6+yo Cavaliers. I've been waiting for everyones verdict and you all seem happy with Proden. I ordered it from NetPetShop on Ebay a couple of days ago. The idea of putting a tiny amount into their food appeals more than putting the liquid in the drinking water. Hopefully AQIS won't be difficult. I regularly order an ear medication from USA for the Cavs yeasty ears. It seems to work better than vet prescription ear drops. AQIS held it once but sent it on after I called them. I have another order for that coming through too so I hope both products get through ok.

Jodie, I am so very sorry you lost Ollie. We've all lost a legend. He had a special place in my heart and I know others feel the same Godspeed little hero, you have many friends at the RB to greet and welcome you
