Where does the order number show up? I'm not a registered member of Pacers and last time when I paid for the DOL Cookbook my payment went through as a donation rather than payment for the book so I had to get Steve to chase it up when everyone else got their books and mine didn't arrive (because I had no order number). If someone can clear this up for me I'll pop my payment through.

Pet Insurance - Medibank Private Or Other?
cavNrott replied to ZaliGirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
When posting paperwork for claims into any pet insurance company always use registered post. Over many years I have been with 3 different pet insurance companies and when I've phoned to enquire about the progress of my claim, each of these companies on at least one occasion claimed they had not received any papework from me. When I told them I have the registered post receipt proving they did indeed receive the paperwork they usually find it in record quick time, usually before the end of our phone conversation. My insured Cavalier boy needed laminectomy surgery for a ruptured disc. They eventually paid out after 3 months and many phone calls from me. When I said I would be contacting ombudsman if they kept delaying reimbursement they paid half the claim and after more phone calls they finally paid the other half of it. When the policy was due for renewal not only did the monthly premium increase but they informed me that if there are any future spinal issues of any description I will be responsible for 60% of the total cost plus the $250 excess I pay for each claim. -
Family Sues Council Over Fatal Dog Mauling Of Child
cavNrott replied to samoyedman's topic in In The News
I remember when this tragedy happened. At the time it was alleged that Tyra had been wandering the streets for some hours whilst her mother was allegedly out playing the pokies. It was also alleged that it was a regular occurence to see little Tyra roaming the streets without supervision. It was established, I believe, that the father was not a resident in the home where the mother, her young son and Tyra lived. It was also said that the dogs were not wandering around in their owners back yard but were confined in a locked enclosure in the yard and that Tyra managed to prise the gate open widely enough to enable her to squeeze through. It was alleged that Tyra had to somehow squeeze through two closed or locked gates to get into the dog enclosure. Tyra, it was said, was roaming the streets carrying a dead chook under her arm! We can only hope that justice will be seen to be done in this case. Hopefully it will not further add to the opinion of many, if not most law abiding citizens that the law is an ass. -
I'd give the dogs a Capstar tablet each. If you lay them down on a pale coloured sheet you'll see the dead and dying fleas dropping onto the sheet. I use Sentinel Spectrum too, been using it for years and my dogs have never had fleas but my last rescue dog was flea infested when she arrived here. I gave her a Capstar tablet shortly after she arrived because she was scratching like crazy. I couldn't believe how many fleas dropped off her and how quickly it worked. I gave her another Capstar the following day but the first dose must have killed all fleas because no more dropped off and she was no longer scratching The fleas can't breed in your house if your dogs are on Sentinel but I suspect they probably have to bite the dogs for the contraceptive to be effective. I didn't treat the house after the rescue girl came in and we had no further flea problems. .

We had problems with finding a suitable vein when my old, sick girl Faith was pts. We expected problems because in the course of her many previous surgeries the vet had to find a vein in the hind leg. Her veins, he told me in his usual straight forward friendly manner "were stuffed". When her cancer told us it was time and Faith could not go on without suffering, the poor vet tried both front legs and both hind legs. Eventually he found a vein in one of her hind legs. He was comfortable with me being present and I was able to keep Faith calm by massaging her ears and talking to her to distract her. Faith was a very calm dog. The vet was more stressed than either Faith or me while he probed around all her legs looking for a vein. I know our vet well and know how good he is. He had my confidence and trust. He's always taken great care of my Rottweilers and they all loved him. At one stage he got the needle into a vein in the first hind leg but told me it didn't feel right. I said if it didn't feel right it wasn't right. He said "no" and went on to the last of her 4 legs and eventually he was able to place the catheter and Faith passed quickly and peacefully. He thanked me afterwards for being calm and reassuring in a difficult and upsetting situation. I didn't feel at all calm but I knew my job was to keep reassuring Faith and making sure she remained calm. My job was easy in comparison to the poor vets job. This was the only difficult euthansia I've witnessed. Up until Faith it had always gone quietly and quickly.

So sorry Pers. Hope you are ok. Godspeed Tiy.

Healing vibes and lots of love to Ollie. Hope you're holding up ok Jodie through this stressful time. Pancreatitis is a weird illness. My Cav girl had an acute attack for no known reason. The vets did the usual iinvestigations, xrays etc., but couldn't figure out what was wrong. She didn't have the symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea that usually come with pancreatitis. We sent bloods off to pathology and then we knew. They came back with a high lipase level. Now I give her Enzyplex every day and so far, so good. I hope Ollie will be home and feeling much better in the morning. Don't forget to take care of you Jodie. I know how hard this is for you.

I'm sorry for your loss Dobesrock. You did what you had to do for yours and your family's peace of mind. I'm so very sorry you are going through this heartache. In totally understand where Lilli and Joe K are coming from and I'm sure they have no intent to offend. There is a reason for what happened but the reason will probably remain a mystery. These are dogs and they think and act as dogs do. There are things dogs do that we'll never understand.

Should I Ask Vet For Pain Killers
cavNrott replied to chataboxboxers's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If he still has mouth pain 13 days post surgery I would be concerned. I imagine he's quite comfortable at this stage. Did you have a biopsy done to send off to pathology? I've been watching and hoping for an update from you. I hope all is well with your boy. -
At the risk of getting this thread back on topic, may I return to the original discussion which was desexing and growth. How did it come to be about ear cropping and cattle. I foolishly had my Rottweiler bitch desexed at 6 months of age. This is something I would never do again with any large breed. I would wait until the dog was 2yo and the growth plates were closed. All the negatives of early desexing applied to my girl. She was long in the leg, she had TPLO surgery on both knees for partially ruptured cruciates. She was diagnosed with oral osteosarcoma at the age of 6 which took her from me at age 7. She was puppyish in attitude all her life, though well behaved and always obedient. She was a very feminine looking girl and very pretty. I wonder had I had waited until she was older before I had desexed if things might have been different. Now to get back to off topic. She had incredibly soft velvety ears and acute hearing. I challenge anyone who would suggest her hearing was compromised because she didn't have pricked ears. This girl could hear a potato crisp drop on carpet. If ear cropping was legal here I would not do it to my dogs. Not only do I not like the idea of the procedure, I don't like the look of cropped ears on any breed of dog. Pricked eared dogs look as they should. Cropped ears changes the whole appearance of a dog with naturally floppy ears and to me they no longer have the natural beauty of their breed. I think Danes, Boxers and Dobes are beautiful looking dogs in their natural state but not when their ears are cropped. Their whole facial expression is different and in my opinion their natural beauty is lost. In fact I don't think any breed looks any the better for having cropped ears.

Jodie I just found this thread. Thank the Gods that Ollie appears to be feeling better today. Whata boy he is! You must have had an awful night worrying about him. Hugs to you and to Ollie.

Chronic Unknown Skin Condition - Desperate
cavNrott replied to pixandpug's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Where are you Pixandpug? You must be fairly close to me in Mt Waverley since you're seeing the Emerg. vets in Glen Waverley and the Specialist Centre there. If you haven't been able to get the Calendula tea I have some here you are welcome to. If you are local, shoot me a pm so we can get it to you today. ef multiple spelling errors. -
I just looked through their website. It's damn expensive to even have a small ring made.
-
I have a white gold locket with some of Sophie's ashes in it but I would rather like a gemstone too. I don't wear it all the time because I'm afraid I'll break the chain and lose it. If I get a ring gemstone I could wear it all the time. Think I might contact them.

Could you please post a link. The only ones I can see are the red ones and purple ones and I think these are the ones I bought last years but they're really narrow around the girth/chest area. Maybe I'm looking at different ones to the one you bought.
-
I like them a lot and would buy one each for my boy and girl Cavalier. Would like the option of having the boys one a bit shorter under the belly so the coat doesn't get peed on. Consider using coloured camo material too. It seems to be popular for dog coats. I think tiny ones, say, $20 and upwards according to size. Since you can't yet post in the members marketplace maybe you could show some pics in here of the the materials you have available and tell us the measurements you need.

Of course you get a dog to fit in with your lifestyle. If someone runs 5ks a day it would be foolish to expect a little laid back dog to be an exercise companion. Likewise people who are fairly sedentary and a stroll around the block is all they're up for don't need a hyper dog that needs to run for hours to work off excess energy. I have a deaf dog. Her deafness is evidently hereditary. She's not a lot of work. She's a lovely affectionate girl who takes her cue from her hearing companion. I'm not silly enough to let her off lead outside of my property. She doesn't need to be off lead and I don't place her in unsafe situations. Apart from her lack of recall which means the off leash park is out, there are no difficulties. She knows our routine and knows what's expected of her. She has the full length of a 5ft lead on walks so she can sniff and investigate bushes. At the kerb she runs behind me and sits at heel watching my left leg until I step out. She'll sit for however long it takes without moving until I move.

Poor Emma. She's dealing with two problems isn't she? It sounds like her pneumonia is far more serious than Bronson's was. I had to keep Bronson (Cavalier) quiet for a few weeks too, no daily walks, just had him quietly lying around in the house. He usually sleeps on my bed but I was worried about him maybe jumping off during the night so I bought another crate and put it beside the bed. With no walks and no sleeping on the bed I could see he though he was being hardly done by, especially when I took the other Cav out for a walk. I think it was about 4 weeks before they said he could have a 5 minute walk each day.

My Cavalier had pneumonia last September and was on two different antibiotics for 3 months before he got the all clear. No other treatement was needed, probably because we caught it early. He refused breakfast one morning and this dog never refuses food so I knew something was wrong and took him to the vet immediately. They took xrays and thought he had an obstruction in the oesophagus caused by the raw bone I fed him the previous night. We could see bone fragments in the first xray. The second xray showed the bone had moved along to his stomach as it should have. This vet is very much against feeding dogs bones so I had to listen to a lecture. My boy wasn't coughing or wheezing showing any sign of pneumonia so I don't blame them for not figuring it out. When the second xray showed the crunched up bone had moved along they were stumped and sent us off to the specialist centre right away and it was there that they discover the pneumonia on the set of xrays they took. They did a lung wash to make sure nothing sinister was going on. Pneumonia, as I discovered , hangs around and isn't easy to get rid of. My boy recovered well and has had no further problems.

Should I Ask Vet For Pain Killers
cavNrott replied to chataboxboxers's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When my dog had surgery to remove a tumour on her gum she was in significant pain the next morning. We were given Rimadyl but it wasn't doing much. The following morning we went back for a Temgesic shot. The vet prescribed Tramadol for her on an as needed basis and she felt much better. -
My Rotweiler had a lump on the right mandible between the canine tooth and PM4. I noticed a small area of inflammation long before a lump developed and my vet extracted the healthy PM4 tooth with my approval so we could find out what was causing the problem. He biopsied the gum underneath the tooth but the pathology results were inconclusive. I suspect pathology stuffed up the specimen. After 3 months a small lump developed in the same place. This time we took 3 biopsies and pathology came back with a diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the mandible. My girl was 6yo when she was diagnosed. Sophie's story is in the palliative care thread forum. It's a sub forum in the health section. I posted her progress in the 'Unwell Rottweilers" thread. I don't know where you are in Victoria but I can recommend my vet who took excellent of my girl. He gained quite some experience with gum issues with her. He wouldn't ignore a lump on the gum. He is in the Box Hill/Blackburn area. I'm glad you've given your vet the boot. He should never ignore a lump of any description anywhere on the body. PM me if you would like more info.

Which ones are parti colours. The Tri or the Blenheim? parti colours = blenheim and tri whole colours = ruby and b&t I thought that's what it would be. I haven't heard Cav's referred to as parti coloured. I have a Tri and a Blk/tan.

If she gave you no other option, maybe she doesn't know any other option. I would not tie my dog up irrespective of what any trainer told me to do and no trainer has suggested it. If they did I would flat out refuse. I understand that dogs on rurual properties are chained at night but my dogs live inside the house. There's no reason to tie them out. I don't tie them outside shops. None of them has ever been tied up. I have well behaved, obedient dogs (apart from my little deaf dog who's a bit of a ratbag) without having been tied up. The commands my deaf girl learned before she went deaf she obeys. If I tied her out she would harm herself trying to get to me or inside the house. Tying her would stress her out. Whether or not it makes the dog uncomfortable isn't the issue. If it makes you uncomfortable then this method of training is not for you and it will be evident in your body language. The dog will pick up on this very quickly.
