  1. Wow  That's darned expensive insurance.....over $83 per month per dog. I hear the RSPCA now has about the best policy of all the pet insurances. So they should if they're charging that price for their premiums. Most monthly premiums are around the $30-$35 mark. I have a feeling the $$$ might be better in a high interest bearing bank account.
  2. The OP was asking for specific advice. General advice only cuts it if the person giving the advice is experienced with dogs and has good dog knowledge. You have admitted that you have never owned a dog but that your mother has. This really doesn't put you in good stead to be giving advice. The first spring after birth is in no way accurate to predict when a dog will come into season. Don't know where you read that but it depends on when the dog was born and good guess is when the mother first came in. Nope. Wrong again ;) Rescuers desex 8 week old dogs all the time. It's not an ideal situation but the object of the exercise is to prevent even more litters of unwanted pups who end up in the pound. Many breeders are now also doing early desexing of their pups for the same reason.
  3. So very sorry to hear your sad news Grotty. Godspeed Sambucca
  4. Perhaps if you tell your Mum that the dog could be in a lot of pain she might take her to the vet. Really, Mum should be thinking of what is best for the dog rather than what may be not what she wants to hear.
  5. I'm so sorry stormie. How very sad for you and the lovely old girl to go through that. I'll be watching my dogs very carefully whilst they eat their chicken frames in future.
  6. Have a look at www.petproductsontheweb.com.au. They're cheaper even than Priceless Pets and postage is free.
  7. Oh, you'll be glad to have that over and done with. She'll feel much better too without all that gunk in her ears. You may have to continue with drops for a few days though....not what you wanted to hear I bet. We had to do that after Sophie's ears were flushed out but we've never had any ear problems since and that was a couple of years ago. Let us know how she is when you bring her home.
  8. When I first took my beautiful, silly but hyperactive Rottweiler to the vet I explained to him that she behaves like a ratbag so to please assume an air of authority with her. He does and says Sophie is one of his favourite patients. He gives her treats after he's attended to her but beforehand he speaks to her in a calm voice and gets on with what he needs to do and she sits quietly without fuss. The vet nurses on the other hand used to rev her up as soon as we walked in the door. They would speak in an excited voice and cuddle enthusiastically. I did ask them to please not to rev her up because I want her to be calm when the vet examines her so they then did the cuddles and revving up after we came out of the consult room. They were great nurses and unfortunately they've all moved on. The nurses there now don't appear to interact with any dogs. They just tell people to take a seat. I miss the girls who used to be there. About ears. My dog needed to be anaesthetised to flush out her ears. She had yeast caused by water in the ear when I was taking her to the hydrotherapy pool. We couldn't get rid of it any other way despite our efforts.
  9. Are all Tibetan Spaniels barkers? Is barking a breed trait? I ask because there is one in the street at the back of me about 3 houses down and it yaps all day. It's kept outside in the yard during the day, owners are probably at work. If they go out at night it barks non stop until they come home.
  10. Is he peeing more than normal? Is he peeing in lesser quantity than normal?
  11. Stormie, how the did the chicken frame cause the death of the dog? Sorry to hear about his death.
  12. Most pure dog breeds carry some or other health problems not just Cavaliers. The cross bred dogs seem to carry more probs, they can get the worst of both breeds they are crossed with. Do you know a lot about Cavs percyk? Because I have a few questions about mine that I need to ask someone who has good knowledge of the breed. Nope... I strongly disagree with this. One of each sex is best. As I posted to the OP. Males compete with males. Females compete with females. Males will allow a female to be alpha but they may fight another male for the top spot. Same with female/female. I note you have suggested a number of breeds but the recipient of the 'present' must be the person to choose a breed he really wants. He may have a heart breed he's always wanted to own. I have two breeds I love dearly. I would be pretty upset if someone gave me a dog as an unexpected present in the first place. I would be hopping made if someone gave me a breed of their own choice without consulting me. I don't want be responsible for a breed I have never wanted in my life and still don't.
  13. Firstly does your husband want another puppy in the house? I'm always very concerned when I hear of someone wanting to give a puppy as a present because you are in effect giving a gift you would want to someone who may not want the same thing. Is your husband aware of your intentions? If not he really needs to be because he has some major decisions to make and since it's about him then he should be given the right to make these decisions. Secondly, ask your husband which breed of dog he wants. If it's to be a gift to him then it must be a breed he chooses for himself. That is the ONLY way it will the right breed for him. Are you absolutely sure he wants one of the breeds you mention or does he have a breed he's always wanted that is totally different to your choices. Who knows, he may secretly yearn for a wolfhound or a Mastiff. Two small breed dogs are fine with just a 1 year difference in age as long as they are breeds who are placid by nature. Not so with two big dogs though. If you have a male then get a female. There is much less chance they will fight. Male dogs don't want to fight with females. Males compete with males not with females and vice versa.
  14. I found my Cavs didn't like the Coat King but they are quite happy for me to use the Furminator on them. The Rotties don't mind it either.
  15. I'm a bit confused now. Are you giving him one cup at each of his 3 meals or a total of one cup per day? I have 2 young adult Cavaliers and they would eat less than 1 cup of food per day between the dry food and the BARF plus a raw chicken wing. I have to watch their weight carefully as they will put it on quickly.
  16. Have you trained your dog to sit and stay? I don't think dogs are too fond of that otoscope the vets shove into their ears but mine know that sit and stay means just that and they're pretty good. They don't like it but they know they have to tolerate it.
  17. I wouldn't use metho in case there might be an area of raw skin where the dog has been scratching. That would sting like blazes and you'd probably never get near the ears of that dog again without using force. Husky, carry the bottle of drops around in your pocket so they're not cold when you apply them. Don't let her see you with the bottle either. My dogs will run a mile if they see me with the ear drops but I'm able to sneak up on them and give an ear massage and apply the drops by stealth. If her ears are really dirty, smelly and infected you'll probaby need to have them flushed out under GA.
  18. How old is Cody? He might be telling you he needs only two meals a day. If he is a small dog then 1 cup of dry food may be too much for one meal. My adult Rottweilers get 1 level cup of Eagle Pack for breakfast and BARF for dinner.
  19. Elizabeth, why not wait until you have your dog before you buy things. Halti's in particular must be the correct size and the recommendations on the packaging are not much of an indication IMO. If my memory serves me correctly they recommended a size 4 for a Rottweiler and I found to get a perfect fit a size 3 was better and my dog had a head like a basketball. So their sizing is way off. I did use a Halti for some time on my energetic, strong and totally silly Rottweiler when she was young. She weighed just a little less than I did and she was certainly stronger than me. I could not control this pulling dog at all and in order to train her I first of all had to be able to gain some control. Under the guidance of a brilliant trainer we started off with a Halti. It was magic. I could control my dog and we were able to progess with obedience training. We have been using a chain loop martingale now for years.
  20. A pretty huge assumption there Ruralpug. I have had a number of large breed pups and not one of them was remotely near advanced toilet training at 11 weeks of age. Up until about 15 weeks of age is the frustrating stage of taking them outside frequently and playing the waiting game. My last Rottweiler puppy was 15 weeks before she had a clue and I am not a novice at house training puppies. Gotta say that I do find it unusual that someone would bring a puppy home and then shortly after, go out for the evening leaving the puppy alone. That was neither a caring nor responsible thing to do. Since the adopters of the pup had committed to go out for the night I wonder why they didn't leave it until the following day to take the pup home. Poor little pupper was taken away from everything it had come to know in its short life and was placed in a position of being put in a strange place with (or in this instance, without) strange people. I dare say the puppy was feeling fearful and displaced. I imagine the little one felt abandoned and possibly in a state of distress and panic. I hope the people who adopted this little mite will lift their game in regard to caring for the puppy. They certainly got off to a bad start. I also hope that there will be no lasting negative affects on this poor little pup.
  21. You're Bored You've got a seige and maybe a hostage situation going on right under your nose and you're bored???? Man!!! What does it take to rev you up That's scary stuff happening there. I'm not at all surprised the police told you to lock your dog up and stay inside the house. If the situation hots up your dog might be a problem and besides you and your dog should stay safely indoors so the police can concentrate on the situation they're dealing with.
  22. A crate is the safest way to confine the pup. I wonder if her reluctance to toilet has anything to do with the way she broke her leg in the bathroom. Did she jump on something and fall off, or maybe get caught in that small space behind the toilet? It's a bit late to be making this comment now I guess but I wouldn't leave a pup in a bathroom if I was going out for the evening...all the surfaces are hard in a bathroom. A crate would be helpful at this stage for the toileting problems too.
  23. Good idea Vizsla. I was a bit concerned that it might be contagious too and could put all the other pups at risk. Excellent post Nekhbet. Hope the OP takes you advice.
