  1. Westiemum I think we have you to thank for finding the greyhound website for the best price for Joint Guard too.
  2. I have tried most of the products available and the best I have found is Joint Guard. If you go to the top of the page here you will see under the advertisements "View all Advertisers" The Joint Guard info will come up for you. The best price for this product is at http://www.greyhoundproductsdirect.com.au
  3. Mine don't bury, they eat them so it's quite safe to give them indoors. They would have them outside if I found bones under pillows and cushions
  4. Mine all eat their bones inside the house. Both the Rotties have a a small cotton mat each that can be thrown in the washing machine and they take their bones to their mats. The Cavs eat their bones in their crates so the big dogs don't steal them.
  5. I was making up my own BARF mix with human grade meat. Through our trainer I found a guy who does a meat and vegie mix and he uses no preservatives at all. He snap freezes the packs as soon as he does the mix. I add my own supplements.
  6. You're not a failure at all Chloebear. You're a learner and so am I though I've had dogs for many years. Mine are obedience trained and I still make plenty of mistakes and confuse my dogs. You may find a few training books helpful. Have a look at Amazon, their books are reasonably priced and delivery is good. I have just bought 'How to speak dog' and 'How dogs think'. As for tricks, the only ones I teach my dogs are shake and high five, mostly because it removes the fear many people have of Rottweilers if they offer a paw. I've taught one Rottie to roll but that's because she's always at the damn vets and it helps the vet examine her if she'll drop and roll onto her side. I'm flat out putting them through their obedience routines and I don't care much for tricks or dressing dogs in silly clothes. I'm happy with well behaved dogs who do what I tell them to do.
  7. It seems we disagree on a few things about dogs Superkaz. I could not disagree more strongly with you that this is not a good advertisement for rescue dogs. I do hope it will not deter anyone who is seeking to save a life by adopting a dog in need. This is a pup who has had no training, is mentally unstimulated, not walked and who does not live inside with its family. She sounds perfectly normal for a pup who is not receiving direction. There is no indication shown of a neurological or physical disorder in this puppy, neither is there reason to call her a reincarnation of Ghengis Kahn etc., ;) I will always have a rescue dog in my home and haven't had a problem with any of them just because they are a rescue. Any issues that arise are sorted out in quick time. My rescues live inside the house and they are very quick to learn the routine, mostly from my other dogs rather than me, I suspect. I do think it's quicker and easier to train a dog who lives inside with their people. In saying that I am not having a shot at Chloebear. She is new to dog ownership and will do the hard yards as she learns, like the rest of us have. I commend her for saving the life of this pup. Who knows what this pup's life was like before Chloebear came along? Some puppies are more difficult than others. My Rottweiler was difficult but I knew it was due to my handling of the situation. Sound advice and training had her behaving well in quick time. edited to delete a stupid word
  8. I just read your post following mine. I too say ditto to what you advised. Crate training with the dog inside with family is the very best way to bond with a pup I think. The pup grows up as a member of the pack and learns his position in that pack.
  9. You don't mention if this pup is getting any training or if you are walking her to exercise her. A pat every time you pass her on the patio isn't nearly enough to keep any pup out of mischief. Pups will get up to all the mischief you describe and more when they're bored. Most dogs are unlikely to exercise themselves irrespective of the size of the yard. Do you play fetch with her? It's a good way to give her a run and burn off some energy. A puppy can't chew shoes if they're not left around where she can get them. Keep shoes out of her reach. She can't get into the shed to destroy things if the shed door is closed. It's not the pup's fault that an open door is an invitation to inspect the goodies inside. The pup has already learnt that when the shed door is open there is fun to be had. Unfortunately your husband has not yet learnt to close the door when he leaves so he has no one but himself to blame for the destruction. Put a temporary fence around the clothes line and she can't pull the washing off the line. Pups are a lot of work. A well behaved dog is usually equal to the amount of time and effort the owner puts into training and socialising. The saying that a tired dog is a good dog is true. This pup needs something to do and if you don't provide it then she will find something to do herself. This usually means things you don't like her doing. She doesn't know what she is allowed to do until you teach her. In the meantime everything is up for grabs. It's very frustrating I know but you will get the best out of your dog if you put the time into her. She sounds like a very smart puppy who wants to learn but she needs someone to teach her.
  10. I doubt this dog came from an ethical breeder. With a small muzzle and a skinny head it doesn't sound like a pure bred Husky. I doubt any breeder would want a pup they bred to live in a muzzle. I certainly wouldn't subject my dogs to such inhumane treatment. If she is from a registered breeder then the dog would be better off returned to the breeder. 4ngi3: In what situation is your dog able to go for smaller dogs? Do you not walk her on a lead? If it's because she's escaping from your yard it won't be long before the situation resolves itself in a tragic way. In fact it will also resolve itself if you don't walk her on a lead and you will probably find yourself with a compulsory attendance at Magistrates Court after your local council has dealt with you. If you can't be bothered involving yourself in training your dog then please rehome her to someone who will put the time and effort into making her a good, safe dog.
  11. I know what you mean Kaz. Faith is the same, she spends at least 20 hours a day on the couch but if I bring out the tennis ball, she thinks she's an athlete, jumping and running around. She and Sophie play tag and they know whose turn it is to fetch the ball. I have to shut Faith in the house after a couple of ball runs because I know she won't be able to get off the couch until mid day the next day. As it is, she has her breakfast on the couch because she won't get up and come over to the to part of the kitchen where she eats. She's always a bit stiff and sore in the mornings. I walk her for exactly 10 minutes and then turn back so she gets her full 20 minute walk. This regime is working well for her. We did start off at 5 minutes either way but she can now handle a longer walk. It knocks her out for the rest of the day and she's back on the couch until dinner time. To see the way she wolfs her food you would never believe this was a dog with a poor appetite.
  12. Hi Mizzi, I would have had the traditional replacement of the ligament in my dog if she was a small breed and if she was older. She was only 18 months old when she had the first knee done. The TWLO surgery is invasive because it involves bone osteotomy and the placement of a titanium implant. However, once it's done there can be no further ligament damage and it can't break down in the future so the ortho surgeon and I decided to go that way with the surgery. She had the second knee done 12 months later. Even though the surgery was done within a couple of weeks of her rupturing the ligament there were already arthritic changes showing on xray. She will be 7yo in January and doesn't as yet have any problems with arthritis.
  13. Kaz, the vet told me to walk a HD and ED dog for exactly the same period of time every day. Faith started off with a 10 minute walk and now we walk for 20 minutes. I won't increase the time because 20 minutes is all she can handle safely. ETA: I guess it depends on the age of the dog and the severity of the problem too.
  14. Is his arthritis fairly mild since occasional Glucosamine shows an improvement? Glucosamine and Chondroitin need to build up in the system to have any therapeutic effect. My Rottweiler has had TWLO surgery on both knees for ligament ruptures. She is on Joint Guard daily and has been since it came on the market. She also gets a fish oil/glucosamine (combined) capsule every night with her dinner. Optimum benefit will be seen by using Glucosamine Hydrochloride (it's more bioavailable to dogs than Gluc. sulphate) together with Chondroitin. Joint Guard is the way to go because it contains all the necessary ingredients that work together for arthritis relief.
  15. Welcome aboard Ritchie. How old is your puppy? It would be a good idea if he is still very young to take him to puppy pre school and then follow up with an obedience trainer or an obedience club if that is more suitable to you. The reason your puppy isn't doing what you tell him is that he doesn't understand what you want him to do. Obedience training will teach you how to teach the puppy.
  16. Pandii my dogs are soft dogs so the way I correct them would probably not be an effective way to correct your boy. You need to consult with a behaviourist/trainer who has a full understanding of the breed. I do know someone who would be perfect but unfortunately he is in suburban Melbourne.
  17. You could put another temporary fence a few feet inside the existing fence with star pickets and dog wire...or you could take the dogs inside with you where they will probably lay down and relax. If the pup has already started digging at the back fence it's probably only a matter of time before your dogs either dig under or the dog at the back will dig through to your side. Since your female is dog aggressive it's better that you make sure these two dogs don't met up on either property because it could be nasty if they do. Do you take your dogs on daily walks? A tired dog is usually a well behaved dog.
  18. I would be a bit careful of doing this. Bombarding him with people could have the opposite effect. I would seriously consider getting a pro to work with you on this as it is a very serious problem. Just remember that everytime he jumps at a little old lady or anyone else, it is cementing in peoples mind that Rottweilers are a bad breed. The breed needs some major protection these days and i think putting your dog in situations where there is a chance he may act unsocially is not only bad for him but bad for the breed as a whole. I think he needs controlled socialisation under the guidance of a professional to avoid any potential mistakes with the general public. Excellent post Jesomil This little old lady that was jumped at will tell everyone she knows about those terrible, vicious Rottweilers and how one of them tried get her and that those dogs should be banned. The breed doesn't need any more bad publicity because we're already looking down the barrel of BSL. Each and every person who gets growled at or jumped at on the Railway station will spread the word negatively about the savage Rottweiler and the whole breed gets a bad reputation by association. Pandii, rather than just speak with a trainer, have a trainer come in and help you to train this dog hands on. The more often this dog gets to growl and jump at people, the more often he will do it. . Why was he not socialised when he was a puppy. It's a far more difficult task to socialise an older dog who has already made its own decisions about how to behave around strangers. It may be that he doesn't have the temperament required for the job you want him to do. If my dogs growled or lunged at anyone the sky would fall on them and I imagine they would think twice about repeating the performance.
  19. I've tried a few of the products and find that Joint Guard is the only one that works. It takes about 6 weeks to kick in though. Green lipped mussel products didn't work with my dogs.
  20. I would be arranging for someone to come in to let the pup out during the day to toilet. For a 7 month old pup to need to hold on for 11 hours could cause problems in that she's likely to develop an urinary tract infection or kidney problems due to having a full bladder for too long. It sounds like this pup has developed the habit of holding on and when you're playing with her she is concentrating on the game and is losing control of her bladder because she's not trying to hold it. I certainly wouldn't chastise her for it. Take her outside before you play with her. Does she drink enough water? Am I reading correctly that this pup only urinates twice a day? Once at 6.30am and again at 5.30pm and only once more if you take her for a walk at night? That doesn't sound right to me. When you take her out at 9pm you will need to stay with her to make sure she goes or just take her outside the property for a 5 minute walk. She really should empty out before being put to bed. Do you take her outside to pee when she wakes up whining? I agree with Miranda that a soft crate, particularly with a blanket over it is far too hot this weather. Invest in a wire crate so pup has some air circulation.

  22. Travelcalm Ginger tablets help some dogs with car sickness.
  23. Yeppers, that's why I took my pup there too. I really wanted to socialise here right from the start of her life with me. Problem was that there were two large breed pups, mine being one of them and 4 small pups. The vet nurse didn't have the confidence to allow the large breed pups off lead with the little ones so the small ones got to play together and the biggies were kept onleash. My pup was in fact the quietest pup there but because she is a Rottweiler she had to stay onlead. She already knew sit, drop and come anyway but it was awful for the two of us who had to keep our pups onlead while the others were allowed to play together. That's why I didn't bother to go back after the second session. Geez, you got a free sample of Eukanuba. All we got was earbashed about it
  24. The vet nurse is correct. Sentinel Spectrum is a flea contraceptive. It works well, I've been using it for years and never seen a flea on the dogs or in my house. There will be no flea population in your house if you use Sentinel. It won't kill a hitch hiker flea but the flea will never reproduce if it bites your dog. Most flea problems are caused by flea eggs in your house or yard hatching and you get thousands of fleas that feed off your dog. I'm surprised to hear that the vet nurse was bagging Sentinel...do they sell it at that vets? My experience of puppy school was that the vet nurse pushed Eukanuba dog food ad nauseum and she had very little clue about dog training. I had paid for the full course of puppy lessons in advance but didn't bother see out all the lessons because I got sick to death of hearing about Eukanuba. I wouldn't feed that brand anyway and my pup was fed BARF. ETA: Ooops I was a bit slow in replying.
  25. Oh how awful. I'm so sorry Varicool. R.I.P. Ally :D
