  1. The vegies you are feeding need to be blended to a liquid or put through a juicer and mix the pulp with the juice. Chopped vegies are of no nutritional value because the dog's digestive system can't break down the cellulose walls in vegies. You also need to be feeding your dog more meat. He has hardly any meat in his diet and no red meat at all.
  2. Trying not to be rude here but that is one of the worst diets I've ever heard of for a growing pup..or any dog really. Please do a search or read other posts here about a suitable diet for your pup. There is very little in that diet that is of any use at all to your dog.
  3. I agree, take the rug away. She's a baby puppy and has no more bladder control than a baby human. I have polished floors and rugs everywhere so the dogs don't slip on the floors. All dogs will gravitate to rugs because they're comfortable to lie on and play on. When my dogs were pups if they had an accident on the rug I cleaned it up. efs
  4. If you were walking with your friends dog just prior to her dog showing signs of kennel cough then your dog has already been exposed to the virus. Time will tell whether or not she will actually develop kennel cough. She may not. I used to have both the parainfluenza and the Bortadella nasal vaccine for my dogs but I no longer vaccinate yearly and when I do vaccinate again it will be only a C3 CanVac.
  5. I have seen M Tucker in action and I agree with the snippets of information allegedly written by Dennis Cody. I haven't trained with either of these people but if I asked the trainer we have I would trust him to give me an honest opinion about any trainer who uses antiquated methods. This enables me to warn a novice dog owner who is looking for a trainer about where not to look. I do agree it's a bit off a trainer writing about other trainers in a negative way in an article intended for the general public, if the article is open for public notice. I see nothing wrong in a trusted trainer giving a private opinion of others in the field. eta: I am not a trainer.

    Chiros?

I prefer myotherapy to chiro. It works on the muscles and keeps them strong. If the muscles are strong everything else will probably be held in place.
  7. No, you don't come across as stubborn, stupid or irresponsible. You come across as a novice dog owner who cares about your dog. However you do show a reluctance to take your dog to the vet. None of us like paying vet fees but it's a responsibility that comes with owning a dog. We can only tell you what we would do in your situation going on the information you provide. I believe you need to get that urine sample to the vet ASAP. We can't see the dog and her symptoms indicate she needs vet attention...whether or not the symptoms appear and disappear at random. You can go to your vet and ask them for a container to collect a urine specimen and they will give you one. These containers are also available from any chemist. Ural is not an antibiotic. You need a prescription for antibiotics. Will you at least phone your vet and ask him about giving the dog a human product? You need to be sure the product is safe for dogs.
  8. Tiger bluez, Last time you asked about a health question in your dog and you were advised to take her to the vet you said the same thing about people being nasty or harsh. Maybe you need to add into the heading of your post about your dog's health that you do not want any advice about taking your dog to the vet because you consider such advice to be nasty or harsh. People are NOT being nasty by advising you to take your dog to the vet. You are getting sound advice with the welfare of your dog in mind. I wish I was so lucky that a vet visit and some antibiotics would heal my dog. If this dog was in season when she was spayed I can assure you that even if you failed to notice the vet most certainly would and probably would have advised you to delay the spay until at least a couple of weeks after the end of the heat. She is not on heat now either because spayed dogs don't come into heat. The other thread you refer to is not applicable to your dog because your dog is displaying symptoms other than humping. This thread is offering you advice for your dog. It's up to you whether you take it or leave it. At the risk of repeating myself your dog is humping after urinating and rubbing her vulva along the ground and licking excessively because she probably has a urinary tract infection which is burning and stinging her vulva and she probably needs a course of antibiotics. She is telling you there is something wrong and you're not listening. You think her symptoms may be due to the weather You can't be serious If it was my dog it would not give me any peace of mind to delay a vet visit for another 5 days. It would keep me awake at night with worry. The least you can do if you won't take her to the vet PRONTO is to collect a sample of her urine and take it to the vet for urinalysis. I am being harsh in this post. Sometimes it's necessary when people clearly are reluctant to take their dog to the vet. I ask if you had painful symptoms that appeared to be linked to a urinary infection would you wait a week to be seen by a doctor?
  9. No more humping, you are lucky this problem has resolved itself overnight. I doubt it's sexual behaviour. Her actions are telling you she is uncomfortable and that something is wrong. It sounds very much like she has a urinary tract infection which is causing irritation and is stinging and/or burning the vulva. I would take her to the vet promptly because she probably needs antibiotics. How long has this been going on? You can collect a urine specimen in any wide mouthed small glass or plastic container you have in the house. I sterlise the container and lid by pouring boiling water into them and allowing them to dry by turning them upside down on a paper towel. When your dog goes outside, stand behind her with the container and collect some urine directly into the container. Easy to do, you don't need any other tools and you are getting an uncontaminated collection. Edgesmum: good idea for small children but my dog would remove that bag sticking to her hair in much shorter time than it would take me put it there. I imagine it wouldn't be too comfortable for the dog when removing it either...a bit like waxing.
  10. Are you saying 'heel' is a voice cue for loose walking Not in our training regime it's not. Heel means my dog must walk directly beside my left leg. Loose walking means my dog is allowed the full length of the lead providing she does not pull. I use the word 'easy' for loose leash walking when releasing her from heel. Sorry I don't agree with your training methods at all. I would not resort to hitting my dog with a fly swatter or anything else. Hitting dogs plays no part in obedience training IMO. My dog trusts me not to intentionally hurt her and I don't betray her trust. I suggest you give yourself a good whack with that fly swatter and see how it stings. My Rottweiler was a dedicated puller. If she is overly excited and starts pulling as soon as we get out the door a simple Ah Ah will stop her followed by a few snappy obedience commands in the driveway to remind her of who is in charge. We then continue our walk without her pulling.
  11. I use Aloveen, buy it online because the vets are expensive. Use it with the Aloveen leave in conditioner.

    Rip Storm

Oh look at that beautiful face so full of love. I'm sorry for your loss of this beautiful girl. Godspeed little girl.

    Poop Question

Weetbix have no nutritional value to dogs. They're just a filler.

    Poop Question

I disagree. It's not a waste of money at all. New puppies should always be taken to the vet after purchase for a full health check. Diarrhoea can very quickly cause dehydration in a baby puppy. I don't know if Tess has already done this but if not, a vet consult is the way to go. Take a sample of the poop with you Tess.
  15. Wizard what about instead of giving such expensive meds away for free that instead you request a donation to rescue. Just a suggestion  They can either send the donation to you directly or to your rescue of choice and you send the goods when the rescue confirms they have the $$. I'm a bit cranky today so I will add that I've seen in the buy/sell forum that some people who we know are in full time employment and have OH's who are also employed will quickly jump onto anything that's put up for free. I think these folk should be prepared to pay something for whatever is on offer and it helps rescue.
  16. The emergecy vet clinics are open. If you are in the SE 'burbs the Animal Emergency Centre is open. Phone 9803 8122. The Yellow pages will tell you which emergency vets are open and if there's one open in your area. As others have said Parvo is rife at the moment and you need to have this dog tested and treated TODAY. Your other puppy may be in danger as well.
  17. Rex you can run like the wind now with no pain. I'm so very sorry KW. Godspeed Rex
  18. Dru I hope your news about George is better than mine turned out to be about Sophie. Sophie had a tumour removed and osteosarcoma was found in her mandible.
  19. My Rottweiler girl was 16 months old before she ever eliminated outside her own yard and she was walked every day or a leash free park. I didn't see a problem with it. My Cavalier boy was 2yo before he peed outside our yard. As others have said, you are asking far too much of your puppy to walk for so long and so far. If he is suffering discomfort on these walks you are making a rod for your own back because he may hate going on walks forever. It could also cause joint problems with the pup. Since he was walking ok until recently have you taken him to the vet to make sure his knees or other joints are not causing him pain? I would walk for 5 minutes maximum and then turn back towards home. You may even have to start with walking just a few houses up and turn back home until pup is comfortable with the walk.
  20. Why do they want a 'tough looking' dog. I have my doubts that any reputable rescue would want to rehome a dog whose potential owners are only interested in 'tough looking' and attack trained.
  21. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Run free beautiful boy. :D
  22. Hope the poor Dobe recovers quickly. I think it's always a good idea to have the dogs go to a friend or to put them in the kennels for the day if tradespeople are coming and there's no one home to organise the dogs.
  23. Wishing you all the best for tomorrow.
  24. Oh Lordy you are having a hard time of it Dru. I share the worry you are going through at the moment. Sophie too has a possible/probable malignancy in her gum and jaw and she is having a biopsy done on Monday. We have already had one biopsy done 9 weeks ago but pathology sent back in inconclusive report bascially saying they didn't know what it was but would not rule out malignancy. It's much worse now so we are taking two large specimens to send to them on Monday in the event that if someone stuffs up one specimen. we have a backup one. How old is George now? Sophie will be 7yo in January. Please keep us posted about George.
