  1. Grain free salmon German Shepherds and White Swiss Shepherd Feeding solely this formula as one dog has extensive protein allergies and this is the only Canidae product he can have. The rest are on it to avoid cross contamination. Senior GSD very chilled and inactive, 2 adult GSDs quite laidback (active only when required), pup WSSD active as you would expect a 12 month old pup to be but starting to chill out. If you are asking if the kibble might influence on their temperament or energy levels - in our case, no. They are this way no matter the kibble they eat. Also feed fresh meat, bones, eggs, olive oil, Happy Paws Training Treats, dried venison products and the senior GSD gets a Glyde supplement. Interested to know the reason behind these questions.
  2. Do you give anything after using hydrogen peroxide which has resulted in vomiting? Or just give access to fresh water or a small meal to line the stomach? I'm thinking of any residual HP that might be in the stomach after they've finished vomiting.
  3. My GSD let loose a SBD in the elevator between floors. When the door opened, it wafted past the people waiting to get on and I could see them trying not to react. I was so embarrased that I took the blame, apologising and citing food poisoning. Thankfully they sympathised and offered some home remedies for sore stomachs! Meanwhile Mr It-Wasn't-Me sat looking all sweet and innocent and I silently prayed that he wasn't working on an encore.
  4. A member of the public wrote down: White Swizz Shephead The actual name: White Swiss Shepherd
  5. Every day. I have four large dogs in a suburban back yard and compost worms that need feeding.
  6. Perhaps an Invisible Fence? I've heard lots of good things about them but the quality ones are not cheap. I wonder if there's a way to trial one before committing to the purchase. I too would prefer a run over a chain. If your Mum doesn't want to put up more fencing, would she be interested in a temporary run instead? Perhaps something like this? We bought two of these kits and they are a dogsend when renting and also when we visit the relatives up north. Within minutes of arrival, we can put together a freestanding run that the dogs can relax in totally safe and secure.
  7. Cherry is absolutely gorgeous! When we're travelling our lot usually show less interest in food so we grind some of the Happy Paws Training Treats into powder and sprinkle that over their dinner. We only need a little bit (use it like chocolate dusting on a hot choc) and they wolf it down. Happy Paws also have a ready made product called Perfect Apperteaser if you don't want to grind your own treats. This is a link to their website and they also have a Facebook page.
  8. Kennel for outside (just so we can say they have one). It's an excellent support frame for spider webs which is a good thing I guess because spiders are the only creatures that use it (the dogs sleep inside): Lofabed for the loungeroom: Although apparently our lounge will do just as nicely! Perla dog bed shells with a custom made memory foam mattress and removable cover for the bedroom:
  9. Ditto. If someone could get Turid here, I find a way to travel interstate to see her! She'd be worth the trip.
  10. I don't support tail shortening (no matter the method) unless done for medical reasons. If the dog is born with a long tail, I do not support shortening it for a cosmetic or any other purpose. For me, it has nothing to do with doing it when the pup's pain receptors have not fully formed. I am not comfortable with the idea of altering the look of the dog for historical purposes associated with the breed - the main reason usually cited.

Paw Paw ointment is also great for cuts and wont harm them if licked off. A little goes a long way. Some supermarkets carry it in the same section you would find panadol, otherwise the pharmacy should have it. It comes in a red tub or tube. We always have some on standby here.
  12. A family member had a very old whippet up in the Pilbara. Whenever he noticed ticks on her, he just added garlic to her meal and within a day or two all the ticks were gone. He fed her osso bucco microwaved to within an inch of it's life and a supermarket brand of kibble but never used any form of flea or tick prevention chemical or medication.
  13. With three seemingly permanently shedding GSDs and a WSSD, fur is a fact of life here. If someone identifies the shedding gene or an anti shedding drug, they could retire tomorrow as billionaires.
  14. Two of our four with their absolute favourite anytime toy - the hose. They will sit and stare at the hose until you pick it up and squirt them with it. Chasing water from the hose is their favourite game. Anticipation Chase the water Catch the water (these have been resized to small on photobucket but for some reason wont display small here for 24 hours)
  15. I am wrestling with this decision now. My male is a carrier in a breed only recognised in Australian in 2009. Even if anyone was interested in his imported bloodlines, I am torn whether to use him. He is a carrier only (not affected) and as long as the dam is clear there are no problems, but if the concensus is to try and eliminate the mutated gene well then I shouldn't use him. I'm not sure where the breed stands on this gene as I've heard both arguments. He was selected and imported based on other factors - stud work was not a primary consideration. He will be desexed at about 2 1/2 years old anyway so I only have an 18 month window.
  16. I just had a quick look too and found Tuf-Foot. It's seems to be available from many suppliers.
  17. The pads may be soft (especially if they've been covered by fur) and there is a product designed to toughen pads which can help until they toughen naturally. Not sure of the name but someone here will know. The other thing is to keep walking him on smooth surfaces eg concrete sans stones or lush green grass, to help the toughening process. Just don't reward any resistance behaviour by picking him up. It can make him think "well I threw a tanty and didn't have to walk on the grass, so I'll use that method next time because it worked". Clicker training could also work as it will give him a chance to be reminded that walking on grass in his new feet equals good things. Select the smoothest softest path and when he stops, go in front of him and lure him towards you with something he considers to be very desirable. If he can make even a few steps towards you across the grass, click and treat. Next time, he has to come a few more steps towards you to earn his reward. Before long, he may not stop at all where he is currently refusing to go.
  18. If he had a lot of fur between his toes and it's now gone, it would certainly feel different. Sort of like walking around barefoot for the first time after months in shoes. Is the grass he's walking on the same type, height and condition as last year? Short dry grass feels much more stiff and stubbly than long dry grass and lush green grass any height would feel different again. Throw grass varieties into the mix and you have a crazy choice of sensations your defeathered friend can experience. TLC is correct - a small nick can also result in this behaviour. One sharp blade of grass jabbing into a tiny cut on my foot would make me hesitate before my next barefoot grass walking adventure too.
  19. No worries, four legged passengers are always welcome in our car. Unfortunately the dog in OSoSwift's post is not in Adelaide at the moment.
  20. Just a way of saying thanks for the generous gift you gave me. Just wish that the vet could've kept it a secret. That would have been fun watching you try to work out who your unofficial SS was!
  21. Just been advised that the OH is in Adelaide on his way to Perth and is willing to transport a dog to Perth leaving tonight. I know it's short notice but the offer is there.
