  1. I'm actually not seeing any issues with tightening up the "rescue laws". Would even go so far as to say it's overdue. Ethical rescue will prosper as a result, not go back a step.
  2. Every one of us is a volunteer and as such processes are always open to scrutiny and review. This particular instance was caused by a volunteer being given only the impound number of the dog she was collecting and the breed mix which was kelpie x. Both dogs listed as PCC216 had this impound number and breed mix so there was no reason for her to suspect she was given the wrong dog. From looking at the DOL pictures and the HP website, my guess would be the dog was actually PCC197 and according to pound rounds social networking site he is safe with AWDRI ;) You are incorrect. PCC197 was a red/chocolate BC x Kelpie and in no way resembled either of these dogs. PCC197 was collected by AWDRI and is safe with our organisation. The dog shown in the photos attached and listed as PCC216 is not recognised by pound staff at all. From looking at the DOL pictures and the HP website, my guess would be the dog was actually PCC197 and according to pound rounds social networking site he is safe with AWDRI ;) So it all becomes clearer now. Pathetic. And from what pedestal do you stand and call us pathetic? Get your facts right before you start throwing stones. DOL from a rescue perspective is obsolete and despite the hours of manpower put in by the volunteers who update the threads here (and we do recognise and acknowledge that fact) it is being replaced by social networking and hence for whatever reason is no longer a reliable source. Rescue is filled with enough infighting and bitching and backstabbing without it being done on yet another forum so AWDRI is out of here. From the same pedestal which allows me to clearly see where you yourself have proved your bias. You're welcome.

  4. Bottom line this is a voluntary resource which does not negate some type of effort by any rescue group. Perhaps AWDRI should relook at their own internal processes first before casting any biased stones. Glass houses must be so hard to keep clean.
  5. Out of the three currently in your care Plan B, who is the poo player? Think carefully before you answer.
  6. You mean this one, Julz??? Everyone, this was posted on the RF FB page earlier this evening. I'll provide the link because I think this msgboard is going to downsize it. FB Page Link: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150249260212242&set=a.10150140904537242.283477.285548887241&type=1&theater
  7. I'm truly not dumping on you, but white gums - why are you not out the door driving to the first vet you can find open? Even if it was 500km's away. White gums can mean shock (i.e. he's not getting enough oxygen)...it can be caused by blood loss, a blood infection, trauma or heart failure. You're now running the risk of low blood sugar. This is not something you should "wait and see" about. Best of luck and hope everything turns out for the best.
  8. I wish I could Nursy - I personally love the older sibes....but I have a mally in samoyed clothing with the same-sex thing. Any update on this bubs - miracle of miracles she may have been adopted? But onto the reason for my post. Someone suggested I post in here for advice. I've recently rescued a 1yo husky who needs to have some knee surgery. She's a little livewire so we're training her to "go to her mat" which will be placed inside a crate, to keep her as still as possible during recuperation with her foster carer. Problem being I've never had to crate a dog in my life, so I don't know what size would be appropriate. She's standard husky length, but tiny in that she only weighs 16.6kgs. I've got my eyes on a 42" and 48" metal collapsable crate. Are either of these appropriate? How much room should I give her? Should I get bigger or smaller than these listed? Any and all advice appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  9. Smart enough to have everyone fooled. This same intelligence, coupled with a headstrong mentality, is why this breed is not for everyone. You have to earn their respect. It's also vital they see you (and every member of the family) as above them in the pack order. In terms of differences in how each sex behaves, it's like any other dog. They are prone to same-sex aggression (especially on their territory) but from recollection breeders are slowly attempting to breed that trait out. How the pup is raised plays a major part here, as well. One thing to note though they do tend to get picked on by other dominant dogs because of their natural stance / mannerisms, and the fact their fur looks like their hackles are permanently raised. Early socialisation is key so at least your Mal isn't the one starting it...but in most cases will finish it. Not a breeder but can tell you it's extremely rare to find a human aggressive Mal (but, as in all other dog breeds it can possibly happen). They LOVE human interaction, and this extends to the littlies. They think of themselves as humans, and expect to be treated the same. Some are more intuitive than others re the size of the child and will react accordingly. It's actually heartwarming to see a 55kg beast be all boisterous and full-on with adults (when and as allowed) but then turn into the gentlest lamb with a baby. BUT, they don't realise their size so common sense needs to be used with children. As mentioned above though, they need to respect their family and know their position in the pack order. Whilst in a perfect world the ideal situation is to have the pup grow up with the child, don't discard adult dogs - you'll be surprised how well they react to children even if they have not been exposed to them. Visually they are quite striking (in size and looks), but if you're after a guard dog then I suggest you look elsewhere. As neurotic or "not-normal" as they may be though, I will never not have an arctic breed in my life!
  10. Never imagining she would be taken so young, I count myself lucky to have met Bonnie. An adorable little bear who will surely be missed by all those that were lucky enough to have known her. RIP sweetheart, your time was short but you have left a big hole behind. To Julz & Family - I'm so sorry for your loss, and as I said if there's anything you (or Indie) need, just ask. xx
  11. I'm just about out of words with all I've witnessed/heard. Doubtful the owner will come forward, even moreso that this poor baby was microchipped.
  12. Food issues aside - have you looked into catrophen shots instead? Initial course of 1 shot for 4 weeks, then boosters depending on severity.
  13. When I first met this boy at Renbury...I cried. When I look into this thread...I cry, but for different reasons. I haven't posted before because then you'll all know I've been crying....but dammit this is just too gorgeous to not comment....and yes, I'm crying!!! Well done doesn't begin to cover it.
  14. Can't confirm or deny for either GTE, but there's another mob with a similar name called GTE Greyhound & Pet Transport, also out of VIC. Can you confirm which one it is?
  15. Recently used GTE Dog Transport out of Sedgwick VIC - (03) 5439 6278. Great lady, fantastic service. They do NSW to VIC.
  16. My boy had a beautiful mask.....old age / white hair has gotten rid of that unfortunately....
  17. OMG THANK YOU!! I didn't know this thing existed! I got a knock off backseat buddy but found out I couldn't hook it to the back seats because there's no headrests...I still used it as a stop to the front seat, but because it wasn't rigid/secure my boy likes to test my patience and work his way under to get to the drivers seat!! (Note I did not say front passenger seat....???)
  18. Unless I missed it no-one's mentioned that some breeds are predisposed to same-sex aggression, which may be incorrectly attributed to "temperament".
  19. How can something be defamation if it's the truth? That aside, I would like to know the name of this rescue group - PM is fine. I offer $$$s to reputable shelters to help rescue dogs. This is not reputable in my eyes and I do not want to inadvertently support such a group.
  20. My boy came from a litter of 8 (well 9, but his twin died at birth). He saw his Dad (RIP) and sees his mum and 2 siblings they kept every 6 months or so. Just like when they were pups Mum still has to keep them in line All 3 pups show her so much respect it's heartwarming. A couple of years back I caught up with another two of his siblings (diff families) who he hadn't seen since he was 8 weeks old (he's just about to turn 11). Like someone said above (with the Danes I think?) they reverted back to puppyhood with my boy and one of his brothers ganging up (in play) on his other brother (RIP). I've also had a couple of his other brothers here over the years (babysitting) and their interactions are just as they were in their litter pack. It's absolutely adorable to watch them interact. There's only 1 brother we have lost contact with so it would be very interesting to see how they react if they should ever meet.
  21. Please keep up updated on this, as a friend recently went through the same thing. At Christmas they rescued a fourth dog (kelpie x ridgeback). From the moment he came into the house their 3yo purebred/registered/papered GSD started attacking their older BC who she'd grown up with and has done more damage to a dog that was already damaged from an unrelated accident. I have my own opinion as to why this happened but would be interested in hearing what a professional behaviouralist thinks. (Friends situation was fixed in that the GSD was rehomed recently and is loving it!).
  22. My girl (about to turn 10 next month) was the same, until I did a process by elimination early on. Mind you we cook their food with veggies, pasta / rice into a casserole (unless it's a bone they won't eat raw meat) and after extensive testing found two meats set her off - kangaroo and lamb. Most "beef mince" has kangaroo in it so I started specially ordering beef only from the pet warehouse. It's harder keeping her away from the lamb though as she loves it and seems to just know when it's on the menu for human consumption!
