  1. Looks like what poochies get when they have scraped the skin off their nose from moving around dirt or blankets or even play fighting with other dogs.
  2. That's pretty normal behaviour for a puppy, it's the tention they don't like, so to fix this, attach a very light lead to the collar at home andjust let puppy walk around the house with, they'll step on it and feel tention and get used to it in a non-scary manner. 3 days of this usually does the trick....but only have the lead on when you're at home and you can supervise If puppy is still packing a tantrum after 3 days, leave it on for longer and every now and then pick up the lad and call puppy over to you and give puppy a treat. You'll get there
  3. I'd be happy to meet up for a walk too with my boy Ice. Is Ice a nice calm boy as well? He is entire?
  4. That could be a plan. I get a bit worried about him with small dogs....he's a bit too playful as you've seen and I get worried that all he has to do is slam a small dogs with his paw and they'll be hurt.
  5. The comment in regards to bloat is interesting coming froma Vet. No one know what causes Bloat, there are only theories. The soaking of the food is so the kibble expands in the bowl and not in the tummy. Release gasses?....ooooooooooooook.
  6. Could be a Fungi issue, humidity of late isn't great for some dogs. Could be mites, however from where you said the patches are doesn't sound that consistent with mites? Also, even though you're giving flea treatment, have a look over your dog for fleas, some areas are having really bad problems with fleas and are havng to fea treat ther dogs every 2 weeks. Have a really good look over your dog and see if you can find anything else lurking under the skin Best to head to your Vet after you've checked over your dog for anything else you can find.
  7. Not too bad at shows, seems more focussed on it, but we set up our gazebo close to the ring so we don't have far to go but if I give him an opportunity to say hello to a dog I trust he will still be over excited. That's the problem Vicky, I don't personaly know many dogs I'd want my puppy socialised with, I'm not actually sure I know many well balanced dogs that are bigger than a couple of KG's LOL
  8. This is something I came up against with Dante with 2 puppy pre-schools and an obedience class. Now, apprantely my dog should have a low value for other dogs if it's not allowed to interact as a puppy. So why do I now have a 60kg puppy who gets way over excited when he sees another dog and can not meet other dogs because he's too nutty. My thoughts are that he should have been allowed to play with other puppies at the start of sessions so he could learn how to interact in an appropriate manner. It seems other people are coming across this problem now by not being allowed to socialise their puppies in a controlled manner. I'm personaly against free play because I think it has to be a controlled environment so puppies don't get bullied or hurt during these free play sessions at puppy pre-schools etc. So, what are your thoughts? Granted, the theory is correct, what did I do wrong to end up with a puppy who goes insane with excitment when he sees another dog? Or is this just down to the puppies personality? Some are laid back and some are in your face? We've been asking for a 'watch/attention' and a sit when another dog comes close but he pulls forward to try and get close to the other dog. I think in general he has very rude body language and is going to get himself into trouble one day which I'm concerned about, I can protect him all I can but if an off leash dog approaches him and he doesn't know how to communicate then we may have some trouble if you know what I mean.
  9. I have a book I'm happy to send you.
  10. Sounds odd. The Rice diet is for poochies with upset tummies. I don't see it as a balanced long term diet. There's an interesting discussion on dogs and carbs here: http://rawfed.com/myths/carbs.html
  11. Yep, puppy has most likely come into Rank & shaping period where they will test you, now is the time to make sure puppy doesn't get away with anything. Selective hearing is common at this age as well. Have a read here: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=develop.html everyone in your family has to abide by a set of rules when it comes to the puppy otherwise you'll not get anywhere. In regards to training, generally people keep it to no more than 5 minutes at that age per day. Their attention span is pretty much non exsistent LOL Pushing & Yelling can become a game to the puppy, I'd either serve the puppy with a repremand that the puppy will listen to.....each dog is individual or give puppy a 2 minute time out each time it plays up.
  12. I personaly wouldn't leave a collar on a dog unsupervised. With puppies and collars and I just put them on and ignore the tantrum, they come to ignore it in time but if you make a fuss out of the situation they'll learn to play on that. if the puppy just sits there and seems depressed I personally wouldn't fall for it, I'd just leave puppy there (keeping an eye on it of course). If puppy has decided to run away from the collar, associate it with good things but don't make a big deal out of it, I would usually hold the treat in one hand, having the collar looped over that hand and slip it on when the dog gets the treat.
  13. It doesn't sound like seperation aniexty, if it were though, putting a puppy in fenced yard isn't going to assist. 7 weeks is too young to be away from its' litter so it's probably having a really hard time adjusting. Generally it is advisable to take a week or 2 off to work to settle in your new pooch. Your asking a puppy not yet old enough to be away from its' mother to cope all by itself in an evironment it doesn't understand yet.
  14. Sorry to hear about your problems. Food aggression isn't breed related so don't worry in that aspect. Great Danes if well bred are lovely dogs just like other breeds There is a Dane Thread on this forum that you may like to pop into: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...&start=9915 I would highly reccomend the TOT feeding program: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=tot.html Your puppy could have entered the Rank & Shaping period, you can read more about it here: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=develop.html My general feeling is that dogs should be able to eat in peace but you should be able to go near them when eating. You don't have to have another dog for food aggression to set in. I would not be taking the bowl away from the dog, to me that is bullying and that is not what a leader is. You maybe interested in putting in place the NILIF method, your son maybe able to do parts of it as well under your supervision: http://www.k9force.net/index.html?row2col2=nilif.html
  15. Hey there, How are you going with the DVD's? Finding them helpful?

    Skin Allergy

We're in the same boat and have been since summer started. We're on our 2nd round of cortisone tablets as we can't get it under control. Tape test & skin scrapings showed nothing interesting. We have decided against Intradermal testing and treatment due to the lack of success it gives...around 20% for thousands of dollars. We're currently going into week 3 of a Blood Cleanser, this is being used on the principal that the chemicals we put on our dogs....flea treatments, wormers, vaccinations, chemicals in food can weaken the immune system. We have seen some improvment but not enough to rave about it yet. The Head & Shoulders shampoo doesn't do too badly actually, no miracle cure but does assist short-term in our experience. We have also tried White Vingegar rinses which assisted with some short term itchyness. Tried Collidal Silver, it's ok but nothing too interesting. We are yet to go down the Apple Cider Vinegar route, by why not, nonthing to loose. We have changed food, can't go on completely natural yet as we're still in a growth period but the change of food to a sensitive skin kibble has also assisted a wee bit. We have tried around 20 lotions and potions, some with wee bit of success and some with none at all. Medicated shampoos from the Vet without success. Herbal Yeast treatment just incase it was a yeast issue.....soothed a little but nothing major. After the Blood Cleanser we're going to try the Evening Primose Oil. He was on Fish Oil but brought him off it due to the fact it can create skin issues when given with premium kibble. Right now he's on: Antibotiocs due to a secondary skin infection, Cortisone every 2 days, Milk Thistle just incase it's thyroid based - it's also good for the skin (2 months on, 2 month off), Zinc & 2 x Vit C for the immune system + 1 inner health tablet per day.....he rattles! Oh and 60 drops a day of his Blood Cleanser.
  17. With Dante we do: 1 x Inner Healt Tablet - powder on his food 1 x Zinc Tablet 2 x Vit C 500 Tablets 1 x Milk Thistle Tablet (2 months on then 2 months off) He's on Eukanuba Sensitive Skin (Salmon) He's on Cortisone as well *sigh* Also on Anto-biotics due to a secondary skin infection thanks to the current humidity. We're now on our 3rd different type of Holistic Treatment after trying a range of Vet Medicated Shampoos. If this one doesn't yeild results, we're going to try the Evening Primose Shampoo and Food Supplement, lots of good reports about it. Dante is still on Kibble as he's still in his critical growth period.....nearly out of it thank goodness so we can feed BARF.
  18. When the Vet did it to Dante, it squirted all over the floor....the smell is really really bad! LOL
  19. We use a Horse Shampoo, White Glo? I think it's called. It's bright Purple.......careful with it, don't wear any clothes when bathing unless you have some funky plastic cat suit!
  20. Leila takes the skin off her Black nose reguarily when covering bones in the yard, never scared.
  21. My first thought was insecurities when they don't stop to toilet.
