  1. My head does totally agree with all that you have said. I have done a pros and cons list for both him and us, being as practical as I can, rating them is a good idea. If he can't get up and down that is a big problem. He is on pain meds and anti inflamatries and is not an overly happy lad. He doesn't seem to be bouncing back as well as he did the first time. Having said that he got by himself about 1/2 an hour ago. I have had a Lab that had the cruciate op, she coped much better as it was alot easier than it is for him, as her centre of gravity was a lot lower and she had 4 legs and I didn't have to help her get up and down. Since I can compare how the two dogs managed so differently this is one of the reasons my head is saying I'm not sure. As I said I am a long way off giving up so I will talk to a specialist and see what they have to say. Thanks for the advice and sharing of experences it will give me something to think about should I need to make that decision. Best of luck and all the strength with any and all decisions you make
  2. Wings I'm sorry, your decision you know him best good luck I'm going to add my reasoning I had posted before then pressed wrong button and deleted it all has happened a lot , I would take in his age, he isn't old but far from young, His abilities to cope with operations His ability to mend and comfortable as possible in regards to his activity level, success rate in any operation and number (higher the number or lower success rate would bring down the score) what restriction he would have and quality of life past this point chances of another re-injury or new injury to remaining joints due to added pressure. finances other animals in the house or children (as they usually cause the want for play and restricting or preventing this could dampen a healing dog spirit) the cause of the original injury would play a big part as well. rating these 1-5 5 being very positive, I would think he would score on a his personal circumstances mostly lows. Since you actually know him and i'm an outsider looking in Make your own list of everything to consider good or bad and set up a rating system, before you score set a score you think he would need achieve to live a happy life..
  3. Everyone is doing well here, we have just past the half way mark and my kids are lovin the socialization part.
  4. Everyone is growing nicely here. just got their teeth through and starting to play fight.
  5. we currently have had peepers, lifting of fat bellies and vocal arrangements, love this time
  6. On the other hand as the idea of a reputable breeder is now one who allocates puppies based on suitability, people are saying and doing this just to be able to sell pups and at a high price. The research of the breeder and asking questions yourself and being happy with the answers is as important as us asking the puppy people. Also when we base our ideas of our puppies they are usually 6-8 weeks and personalities are still developing, we do our best to match but if a person isn't happy usually you can tell that in the first couple of weeks and maybe contacting the breeder and discussing the situation is needed. A lot of people say is wasn't what I wanted or explain I needed, then maybe the pup should be returned and either wait for a more suitable or go to another breeder. I haven't experienced it yet but if someone is specific in their requirements and don't get what they want why do they keep it? then say later it wasn't what I wanted but hey! A few things could have happened the leaving the breeder and entering into your home could have forced the puppy to adapt as it saw fit, the household and other animals could have influenced the personality development, or it could have progressed that way on it's own over time but very well could have been exactly what was asked for at the beginning. Just like genetic health issues can have environmental factors, personality and temperament does too. And everything from training, change in location , exposure to more traffic or less, other animals personalities and pack orders, human contact, where they spend the first week, all affect dogs differently and this is not to say the dog was unstable, but a happy go lucky pup who was 3rd or 4th in pack leader that goes to a 1 dog home will change. the pack leader pup going to a four dog home.
  7. I understood what you meant lol, my partner is very direct and with his anxiety he comes across arrogant and aggressive, He is great with words but can't be bothered speaking, His anxiety puts him in defense mode instantly. But because people either one have trouble words or don't actually know the true meaning of them I ask direct questions not is a survey but as conversations. I would ask what you want to do with the dog? answers usually end with family dog, but what exactly does that mean ? so many in so many different ways sometimes I get a friend for my daughter, replace a dog we lost recently. have an old dog getting old want to bring a new one in before he has gone. I have a dog and he needs company we want a girl, I have a disabled child ect But it basically starts the converstation and gives some sort of direction to focus the next few questions on. Eg Family dog answer, I need to know who is in the family and ages, what they do as a family, where they holiday, inside or outside, desexing, other pets and experience with dogs, working hours, obedience and socialization, and so on the friend for my daughter answer, age of daughter, interest in dogs, who is responsible for care, is the daughter aware, work or school, as well as all of the above the my dog needs a friend, why? what is the gender and age? is it desexed, why a girl? working hours, socialization? do they have a current vet? The disabled, type of disability, have you had pets before, who recommended getting a pet? is there lengthy stays in hospital ect All these are only to establish why they want a pup, and yest multiple correct answers for each. then there is a series of questions to what sort of activity level, drive, independence level and temperament is needed, A lengthy convo on sex and colour always happens and usually each email focuses on a topic or to to make sure I know what they mean. I don't just send out surveys and go by that and a lot of other people have question-airs but I am sure it is just the start to base there conversations on to find out what each answer means. People ring up or email and answer all these questions which most are basic so they have already have the perfect answer or a basic one and just say whatever to get the pup.
  8. You maybe an experienced dog owner, my partner has social anxiety I know how interactions are very different for him I can only imagine what goes on in his head and no he doesn't always come off as he actually is, but look at if from a breeder view, How a pup acts with someone new around is very different to day to day life, We know these dogs see the personalities develop their interests and particulars, Unless you spent hours with them multiple times you'd never see that as a buyer to disregard a breeder's opinion is the same as going to a pet shop and picking one out. No one knows that dog more then them if you can't verbalize your self you can always put that put in an email which i find better then a conversation, Don't get me wrong I love chatting with my buyers, but when it comes to what they need and want i ask them to email it so they can take as long as they like to think about what they want to say, how they want it to come across, anything they may forget in a momentary convo. My questions usually are what is it you want to do with this dog, (1st question every time) desexing and vaccination opinions and reasons, what style of play eg a few throws of a ball, trick training, dances with dogs, and so on do they want a dog that will ONE DAY going jogging with them, on the dog that lays at their feet on the patio after a stroll down the park, Age range of family and visitors and their tolerance of dogs, obedience training at home or at a club? Inside or outside dog? if they like a dog constantly at their feet eg the PSI (personal space invaders) or the affectionate dog that is happy to lay over on the floor while your doing you own thing. Working hours and holiday destination preference eg camping, resort, over seas? Fencing and yard size and time they will spend outside the property exercising? Past experiences with dogs and what style of personality and energy they had, health problems they had, things you don't want again from those dogs. Or other animals The list goes on more often or not one question leads to another and before the puppy has left often more then 20 emails have been sent back and forth. Most the time I can recite a puppy buyers complete pet history, and have an understanding of what they want in there next dog. I have seen a person with anxiety and social reservations (a breeder) her dogs one being a GR is antisocial dogs and human, are tense in public avoid eye contact, and this is with every dog she owns. All her dogs have learnt her behavior, and I think this may have a bit to do with the dogs not being suitable for the situation. They get on with her fine but some will show their teeth while looking away from a person approaching or walking past. No one in this situation is comfortable or happy. I am not saying you or your dogs are like that but you can see why we as breeders wouldn't want to see a dog we bred and carefully socialized being like that 5 years down the track. And I personally would hate to have my name on an antisocial Golden retriever it goes against everything they are just like aggressive ones. Any responsible Breeder's priority First and foremost is to the dogs the ones they have bred and the breed they represent. The Only thing they want is to know their puppy is happy for a lifetime with people who love it as much as they did the first time we saw it. That can't happen without suitability.
  9. And what happens if everyone has a special spark with 1 pup who just happens to be the quickest to meet people or has the tendency to get excited easily? What give you priority over the others who say that pup is for them? you can't tell much about pup from a visit or 2, the breeder has seen each and every puppy every day with every new adventure and how they reacted with them, how the play majority of the time, How they act (without the excitement of visitors) on a daily basis. Breeders ask questions in many ways as possible to find out which by the way buyer describe their lifestyle and family. And makes an educated decision for each and every pup. They one you spark with maybe better suited to someone else. And that's usually doing the best by the puppy whom breeders are obligated to first and foremost. It's not miss treating a puppy for not selling it to you because it got excited to meet you or decided you were a good pillow, Most my pups do that to everyone. If i have a few that are very similar in personality being adaptable and easy going, people who come and see will get to have a choice on the day, if one is going via transport to it's home I take a little extra care to make sure I meet their needs. Only because they can't arrive and decide not to have the pup. (has never happened) The one thing I don't take into consideration is colour, all my dogs are the same colour just a different shade. If it works out then so be it but I will not choose because one is darker. I can understand preference, I prefer a black and tan dobes, Saddle back GSDs, choc and white BCs, and blue merle Aussies but is isn't something I'd choose a dog for, If your willing to wait for the personality to match the colour so be it but all my dogs are gold, light gold dark gold is still gold. And if your not happy with my choice a full refund is offered.
  10. At least you have ample choice too.
  11. I think it be good to email or phone to ask how they were going, it can be reassuring for them to know how interested and committed you are, they will probably take the opertunity to strike up a convo with you to get to know you better, I can't see why a breeder wouldn't be keen on talking about the little ones, obviously, If you want to call you may need to email to ask for a suitable time to call as this time can be busy but i love talking with buyers and building that relationship, which i hope makes them more comfortable to call back when they have the pup for advice or help, maybe even with just updates.
  12. nice size wow!!! Is there plans to keep any?
  13. I'd say they simply cannot be found most of the time. Also, that would be putting in an effort. It might also make a little bit too much sense. Can't have that! Especially since it';s obviously all the nasty pitbull's fault! No human error here at all! (As per Ayen Chol coroner's report ) I cried when I read that.
  14. To be constructive what about a Shetland sheepdog? Those I met that were trained were fantastic beautiful dogs? More experience people can tell you if they would suit.
  15. HOLY BAJEASES If I heard that i'd call the cops, I will now know to peek over the fence and look for a toller first .
  16. 1 My golden bit my son when he was a pup, my son accidentally sat down on his leg both learnt valuable lesson and were very concerned about one another. A doberman who bit a man who jumped the back fence 6 ft wooden, she chased him he jumped on the fence, so did she, bit him he screamed fence broke and he ran off. don't know how bad he never came back I watched from my bedroom window. I was 8 when it was over went into dad told him the fence is broke and Shar needs to be let inside. After the full story and a ripped shirt on the fence she got to sleep with me that night. ( FYI single beds are hard to share with dobermans even if your little) It was about 5 months after this she broke though the fence chasing a strange dog off got hit by a car. passed instantly I was devastated. We got her as an attack trained guard dog (so the guy who got away was pretty lucky) about 2 yrs earlier at a different address when someone broke into our house through my bedroom window. My brother had a bed in my nannas room where I just happened to be sleeping that night. He picked my brother up and started walking out but bumped nannas bed, She woke and grabbed my brothers hanging arm and screamed, he ran off after dad chased him with a disarmed ww2 rifle. (Can't be fired, but we had been getting broken into alot) If I had been sleepin in my own bed things could have been very different. Cops told dad where to get her, said the guy would probably come back. She was specifically taught to hate men, (Apart from her owner) very nice soft spoken guy, dad had to meet with her 5 times before he could bring her home, loved woman and children but the mower man had specific instructions for us when he came. Hadn't told that story in years, think I might just go cry myself to sleep now. Miss her so. 2 Had a Rotty that had a fight with a staffy, no skin broken, 3 Goldens mostly lizards, bearded dragons, Had a rotty (different one) who was fast enough to get possums on a tree studded property (3 or more trees within 2 m squared) never broke skin just frightened them or broke their necks.
  17. This is much the same as the QLD government's bikie laws, it's illegal to where a vest that has a bike club name on it, or 'club colours' it's illegal for a establishment to service a person wearing or associating with bikie clubs. Qld is proposing automatic weapons for police officers. And another proposal is bikies must wear pink jump suits in prison. there are pictures of bikies not sure which club but they running around with pink overalls saying F*CK NEWMAN with their club name printed. they also set to parole current prisoners to make way for bikies. This is all bikie clubs harmless or not, criminal or not and it's as simple as guilty by association. Next thing for Victoria, Dog being PTS because next door's dog is a "pitbull" and he is guilty by socializing through the fence, Basic human rights are being legislated away bit by bit. Freedom of speech is being suppressed and the right to defend yourself removed.
  18. One of my buyers are adamant about calling their girl misty, So I know one will be that but which one
  19. I still think it should be compulsory to have where the dog was bred from registered company name and ABN for farmers, Prefix and name for registered breeders and Name and Licence number or CRN for BYB. And then any dog sold through a shop should also place their details. At the moment the only traceable "Breeder" are ones with registered bodies and papers, as our details are plastered on the papers and filed with our governing bodies. Don't get me wrong it's good a petshop chain is taking some responsibility, Why should farmers be anonymous? They are the one who bred the dog, And then an accurate database of dogs who are dumped or have health problems could be obtain to prove the best way to supply the community with animals in their homes. Might just might take some of the "problems" off good breeder's reputations. But that makes it all too legit so will never happen.
  20. Yeah mum has started naming them al tho I tell her not to. She is calling pink collar Princess Bella.
  21. I am cautious I am testing my male and female, dam and sire from previous litter. In hope i get it back in more hope they both come back clear cause then I will test my little girl for $60 a clear by parentage. If this all comes back I will offer to test the sire of my current litter to clear the girl I keep and any others that stay on main. Grand plans and wishful thinking.
  22. Wow never knew or noticed any of that, My family are huge fans of Rotties, Dobes and GSDs quite a few times had 2 of the 3 running together in different combos. Always though they just just meshed ?
  23. Yeah i'd love to fast forward and peek at which one I may be keeping so I don't get too attached to the wrong 5. But even the boys, I have 1 really light one I wanna call Ghost . But as I choose who goes where and many other things it's nice for the puppy owner to have choice about somethings, a sense of ownership for them. And I look forward to finding out what they have come up with. last litters call name were very different to one another. Mocha- boy, Demon- boy, Portia - girl, Charlie- boy, Dotty girl, holly girl, Reg boy and Retro renamed to Phil a boy. We kept Dotty, she was born with a white dot on her forehead, I was going to call her Star but my partner started callin her Dotty, then I started with Dotty-wot (kids TV show) so it stuck. She wasn't pick portia was but was easy second and we kept her due to attachment. Next is strictly pick so no getting attached until i know. Bet someone come back with Bella for a girl, common goldie name. And yes i think it makes a huge difference to recovery, 12 hrs after you'd never know she went through it.
