Apparently, according to some PETA advocate I can't rescue and breed at the same time, because me breeding working kelpies has a direct affect on bull breeds and how many are in the pounds Do you guys come across this a lot? People thinking your responsible and ethical breeding is somehow adding to the shelter dog population? Will they never get it? I've also been yelled at recently for buying a dog from a reg breeder instead of rescuing a working dog from the pound. No matter how much I explained about buying a dog with certain lines and traits bred in versus adopting a unknown quantity, it didn't seem to sink it. Just a bit sick of it. Sorry for the rant but have had a horrible day and this just added the cherry to the top

How To Use A Flirt Pole Properly?
mixeduppup replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
OK, may invest in one and see if I can get her more balanced in that area. Cheers -
So you'll write a note when you return 2 saying "don't ask where number 3 is"

I've heard that whippets and GSDs make super friends! :D

How To Use A Flirt Pole Properly?
mixeduppup replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've used a flirt pole once or twice but never seriously. However, I currently have a dog that I would love to teach how to 'control' its natural prey drive a bit more and was wondering if I could utelise a flirt pole for that purpose? -
Oh come on, you know you've always wanted to own a GSD lol. ADORABLE!

Hate to be picky but these people aren't about welfare, and neither will their drones be. Yes as already mentioned, Animal Welfare would not risk the welfare of animals to do this. Animal Rights is very different. It says in the story that it's Animal Welfare that are doing it. The news story describes them as an animal welfare group, but names them as Animal Liberation. Animal Liberation is an animal rights group, not welfare. Views domestic animals as equivalent to human slavery and all that agenda. Oh OK, it could be worded better. Animal Liberation are just PETA under a blanket

I went out to check on my horse today and the neighbours have just purchased a drone like machine and were flying it over her paddock. My mare is bombproof but the filly next door was bolting everywhere. This drone would be half the size of the welfare drones I would imagine and 20 or so meters above the paddocks. I can't imagine how much damage she could have done if it was larger and closer. I see lawsuits in Animal Welfare's future.

When I was 7 we lived down the road from really rough bogans and they gave their kitten an ear piercing, it had a sleeper in its ear for ages until it got it caught on something and ripped it out. That, I believe is wrong and dangerous.

Any Horse Rescues Out There?
mixeduppup replied to mixeduppup's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks guys, will contact RDA tomorrow -
I have a synthetic saddle that can be used for swimming or rainy days as it's foam and some other water retardant material. It's 16 - 161/2inch I think. Black. I was going to advertise it for sale but thought I'd see if anyone could use it in rescue first. You'll just have to pay for postage :)

Maybe bites/nips when she dreams, you can't have your feet near her, it hurts lol

Actually I recall a story I heard about a really nicely bred and trained kelpie that was found in the pound a few years ago and had a tat and a chip. The chip details were incorrect and so they entered its tattoo details onto the wkc bloodlines database and the breeder took him back. If he was just chipped the breeder would never have had the option.
-
Nope. Microchips only have the current owners, not who bred them and for working dogs that's important.
-
The dogs are tattooed as per WKC main register regulations. The tattoo has the owners initials first followed by the number of the pup and the year it was born (corresponding letters to which year). The tattoos can either be on the left flake or the right ear. The gun is similar to that you'd use for a desexing tattoo or for ear piercing. Everything is on one gun and is over in one squeeze. Ear tattooing doesn't really seem to bother the pups too much, more like a piercing or a chip but flank tattooing seems to cause much more bleeding and pain and I would never do it without local.
-
The animal welfare people are behind wanting to muzzle working dogs on cattle and outlawing yard dogs. So if they film a dog biting a cow they could potentially use that against you. It's insane.
-
Stations may be abusiness but they are also a private home, many people live on stations and lots of non stationy stuff goes on.
-
The dogs are tattooed using a gun and it's done in one motion. The ears aren't so bad but flake tattooing is quite painful (have seen the reaction) and I would never flank tattoo without local first. Pups seem to recover from ear tattoos almost immediately. I've never seen a dog branded and hate the idea of it ever being done. I much prefer freeze branding for livestock or ear tagging.
