I got a random email though my rescue email address yesterday about a young family that inherited a 6 year old Bull Arab 3 months ago and they are wanting to find him a new home. The only issue is that he resource guards food and has growled and snapped at their 2 year old daughter when eating. I asked them if they were interesting in getting a behaviourist in but they have decided they don't have enough time to work on the issue as they have a new baby on the way and don't trust the dog around children so anyway, we are not the rescue for them but if anyone can recommend a large breed rescue in VIC that they think could help that would be great.

Hey Dogmad, Mika is an ECSA dog :) the relationship between Rainy Day and ECSA is a complicated one but essentially we manage the high needs cocker cases in VIC and the adopting process is a joint effort. Interestingly she's not in their current list of adoptables, probably because we thought her trial was a done deal. I shall message the powers that be to get her back up there :)

That would be great Caz, she really is a darling girl. Her trial mum was in love with her within a week and had absolutely no complaints other than her anxiety when left alone. She gets along fine with other dogs and cats as well

I thought I would put this one in here. Mika has come back from trial a couple of times, the first decided they would prefer a dog without hearing problems and the 2nd ended up with last minute family commitments interstate http://www.petrescue.com.au/listings/321823 She is an absolutely gorgeous dog and if it wasn't for the hearing loss we're pretty convinced she would have been snapped up multiple times by now. Has lived with other dogs her whole life so will need someone willing to work on anxiety issues if she's going to be left alone and ideally we're looking for someone who doesn't work full time (or that can take Mika with them to work :) )

I really don't understand how "Supervising" is supposed to work as a backup to a dog that could easily take off with the kid in tow before anyone has a chance to react As far as I'm concerned supervising a child walking a dog means you also have a hold of the lead

Many of the dogs we work with aren't high drive working breeds, and many don't have an ideal 'start' or genetics but we work with the owners to get the best out of them. Two of the dogs in that video started with Steve because they have extremely bad nerves, anxiety etc and neither of the owners thought they would be able to trial them. But now both of those dogs not only score high scores in trials but have won the ring, High in Trials etc. The best part is you would not be able to tell watching the video which dogs they are :) I can definitely see potential in Sarah, she's got the prey drive but it doesn't often come out in front of people Collie will do anything for food but being almost blind proves to be a bit of a challenge, he either doesn't know you have food or he tries to take your hand off with the food :p

now if only I had a dog with drive :p

Call them back 'My friend was the one that knocked it over, she just blamed the dogs, but when I told her insurance wouldn't cover it she came clean' :p you may also need to come up with a reason as to why she couldn't have picked it up before the entire 2ltr bottle was emptied

Desexing will alter the coat no matter what age they are desexed. I would not buy from a breeder who desexes babies, they need their hormones to grow and develop properly. I've groomed many desexed cocker spaniels and work in cocker rescue, coats vary a lot. Collie would probably be the worst I've come across, the better coats usually come from dogs that were desexed at 12 months or older

With english cocker spaniels you don't just have the growth to worry about but they will never get a proper sleek adult coat desexed at that age. Our cocker was desexed before 16 weeks and has a dense and woolly coat which requires regular clipping and gets knotted very easily. Although one advantage is that he is a very low shedder Obviously it doesn't affect him that much but if you like the breed because of their coat I would be finding another breeder, there are plenty out there. here is my guy at his woolly stage

I found this video really helpful as well. very high value treats are definitely a must and rather than putting off the 'stressor' to spend more time on desensitising have you tried just doing 1 nail per day? That way it's over and done with very quickly and then spend 5 minutes doing something really exciting and maybe, just maybe, she'll see the nail cutting as the prequel to lots of fun

Wow that is pretty sneaky.

I'm going to go with this guy, he's not the best example of the breed he most closely resembles so I haven't chosen an actual breed. He's bigger than an average cocker so great for cuddles to keep warm at night. His long fur will stay wet for longer to keep him cool during the hot days and providing you have a knife you can trim it regularly for more bedding. He has a great nose for food and wants to be with you all the time so is less likely to leave you to fend for yourself

When we moved, we moved Collie with the first load, we didn't want to leave him by himself in a half empty house. I stayed at the new place and unpacked while OH and the extra man help went back for more loads of stuff. Once the furniture is in and they have their bed and other stuff they usually settle quite quickly

Definitely English over American Cocker here And Field spaniel over ESS, just not a fan of too much white in the dog for some reason (might be Sarah's fortnightly baths)

I'm not sure you're entirely wrong :p Henri is quite a big cocker according to breed standards, so either the result of some very bad breeding or something else has been thrown in there at some point :) Either way he's freaking adorable

Just wondering if anyone else got some pics of the thunder storm that went through SA and VIC on Sunday night. OH took a couple of videos from our front veranda at 2AM and we managed to get these screenshots Not great quality but it definitely shows how full on the storm was

Hey Jo, last month the pool was booked from 11AM to 2PM instead of 10AM to 1PM. Not sure if this is standard these days. Not sure if we'll be coming yet, November is starting to get pretty busy.

If you take you're dog to a groomer they can groom and blow out all the dead hair and clip his belly and between the back legs which will help him keep cool

we have exactly the same problem in our house, although it's more often me that trips over it, and then there's the times that Collie decides to push it over and empty the bin when we're not home (ok that only happened once). Sooooo, looks like ply wood for the middle bit but what wood did you use for the frame?
