  1. That's MASSIVE I don't think I've ever seen an entry that big (but I don't always pay close attention). I know a lot of sighthound folk were keen to show under the Gilberts. The interstate match/breed feature/breed lecture has attracted heaps, half of the SA Aussie showies are heading over and we have a 3 day show on here the same weekend with internationals. I'm really looking forward to it now! Me too - looking forward to meeting you too! Just love these shows and can't wait to go.
  2. Sorry all - I missed the responses to this thread. As for allergies my Fauves shed like nobodies business so if you're allergic to fur and dander I would imagine that you could have a lot of issues with allergies to be honest. I am seriously allergic to cats but don't have a problem with my Fauves (obviously) other than picking up the hair they leave around the house. When it comes to walking them they are most definitely a scent-hound and most definitely a pack animal. I have been walking 3 Fauves a day for a couple of months and it is amazing to watch them when they get a scent. One Fauve on their own will smell something and be excited but is relatively easily distracted. Two Fauves will pull, sniff, jump and whine a little but can still be moved along relatively easily. Three Fauves are a different story!!!! Recently we went for a walk on the local village common and they discovered a scent and we ran together - them in front, me behind - whilst they talked and barked and howled about what they could smell. It was amazing to watch them "work". Last weekend Steve and I went for a walk and a fox crossed the road about 100 metres ahead of us - once we reached that point we stopped to see if we could see where it had gone and the Fauves went CRAZY!!! They whined, they howled, they barked, they pulled and they knew that they were supposed to chase after that smell that had just gone through there. I have no doubt that a Fauve provided with the ability to chase after something that distracting would find a way to do it but no different than a terrier. I have owned Jack Russells in the past and they were much worst escape artists than my Fauves. Of the 3 Fauves bitches I have with me now, one would always come back to me (Daphne), one will rarely come back (Marie - why we call her "the Bitch") and one who picks and chooses (Anna). Speaking with Neil who first imported them he says that most of them turn around and look at you, smile, and piss off. I have found this to be true!! In the UK, where there are many more Fauves, they say that if you train them from a very young age you won't have this problem and I plan on putting this to the test with our next Fauve. When you read the European hunting forums they will say that the biggest problem with the Fauves is that they won't leave you to hunt. I think that the thing to remember is that they are truly a pack animal and have a real pack drive. Anyone who has seen my Fauves at a show (or worse yet, attended a show with me) will know that my Fauves have a TERRIBLE habit of howling when I walk away from the gazebo. I have talked to a behaviouralist trainer about it and they have said that they go into "pack drive" and having watched them with this fox scent last week I would agree with it. It also seems to be something that is in lines - the newer lines in Australia don't seem to have the same problem with howling, thank the Lord!!!
  3. Awesome!!! Highly recommend if you're attending the show that you spend some time (and some money ) at Milawa. A real foodie's treat and one of my favourite places!! Awww the cheese factory, the olive shop, the mustard shop, the wineries...... And we get to show our dogs too?????
  4. Can't wait for these shows - they are my absolute favourite shows ever!!!
  5. It could have gone either place, I went with what the vet was happiest with. It is easier to keep an eye on it there. Yeah it would be much easier and would stay dry. I always worried about it drying when it was sandwiched between big fat boobies! Makes sense to have it out of the way! I also used to think that it must hurt having little claws needing at the site though they didn't seem to mind. Actually it is the worse type to do, because if something went wrong during surgery the vet would have to close the incision before turning the bitch on her back to attend to her. Yeah I suppose that makes sense and would have been a real issue with our greyhound bitch that had the ruptured uterus....

  7. Oh Rebanne they are beautiful!!!!! Her scar looks nasty - the rescue dogs always had them along between their teats.
  8. I had been rescuing for a couple of months and rescued my first pregnant dog and needed information. I googled and came up with Cordelia's Canine Rescue and rang Jacq. She gave me LOOOOAAAADDDDDS of information and also told me about DOL. Fast-forward until now and DOL is part of my life. Sad but true.....
  9. Come on Fern, we're waiting her for you as I'm sure many other are elsewhere, particularly at home You looked fit to burst back then!!!
  10. I don't see admitting that perhaps a different home might be better for Harper as "giving up". I see it as doing right be the dog. Patricia McConnell once commented that there is no shame in rehoming a dog to a home that suits it better than yours. I think there's a lot of wisdom in that statement. I've said it before but at risk of repeating myself I will say it again. I rehomed a dog when he was 9 years old. I should have rehomed him when he was 6 months old when it was obvious that he was a poor fit for my family, my existing dog and my lifestyle but I was so conditioned to thinking that once my dog, always my dog that I forgot to think about how what I was doing was so wrong for the poor bloody dog. Tigger is a much, much, much happier dog now that he is not mine. Sure when I see him he is happy to see me and not too nervous (he was a seriously nervy dog) BUT he is constantly on the look-out for his real mum. Broke my heart to "admit defeat" and rehome him until the first time I saw him with his new, real, mum and then I realised that I had, finally, done the right thing for him when I found him a new home. That poor dog was truly stressed beyond belief living with me, I was stressed living with him which made him MORE stressed, which made me MORE stressed etc etc etc. When I first read that quote of Patricia McConnell's I was so relieved.
  11. I think there needs to be something going back to the individual pet shop. We have 3 pet shops here on the border and one of them is actually quite good at getting it right (for a pet shop) and the other 2 are abysmal. We used to see many that had come from the other 2 pet shops and in fact were still microchipped to them. I'd like to know what the checks will be. Without a microchip link to a petshop, how will they know?? I can see one good thing possibly coming of this. If the system can be tweaked, so that animals can be traced back to the pet shops, then there's no reason why it can't include ANKC registered breeders and those from WD registries. Finally , we may see some real date about where the pound dogs actually come from... Yeah I think it is great - I think all microchips should have a link to the person who bred the dog/rehomed the dog, pet shop, rescue, breeder, byb etc.
  12. Thanks Fi - that was the photo on Facebook also Carson was a real character - a bit of a turd at times but full of personality!
  13. Posted with permission of my friends at Taejaan. "Today (Thursday 2 June) the Whippet breed lost one of their best. Multi Spec BIS Ch Marchpast The Emblem (ImpUK) passed away due to a freak accident that severed his spinal cord. He died in my arms, and I am devastated.Carson was imported from, and bred by Stephen McMorrow. RIP Carson. He will live on in the legacy he has left behind." Molly, Sonia & Alicia are understandably devastated. RIP Carson. Carson
  14. I agree, plus if they are actually enquiring about a puppy you can at least see first hand how they have raised their other dog regardless of how 'bogan' the people actually appear IMO I agree with both of these comments.
  15. I've had more (thankfully minor) incidents at dog shows than away from them. Grover was bitten once by a Dachshund who actually walked into the group line up with Grover's fur in his mouth - his owner didn't apologise, he just laughed. Daphne was recently rushed by a Brittany and I've seen plenty of other incidents including people being bitten by show dogs. Obviously all dogs should be controlled at any event which dogs attend but I think its unfair to say that it only happens with the general public's dogs. What happened to Sway on the weekend was inexcusable but in my experience it could as easily have been another exhibitor's dog who did it.
  16. He IS lovely isn't he? I was buzzing when Katherine rang to let me know. He is truly setting a benchmark for Fauves in Australia and I love it!!!!.
  17. Woohoo - go Hagan - his first Runner-Up in Group, just the big one to come now Big congratulations to Katherine on researching and importing this beautiful boy who is going to be such a huge boost for the breed here in Australia.
  18. Didn't realise you had another rescue. Good on you guys! Tell Mr Newfsie that those silly horses are still living next door only now their owner has moved away and sold her house.... Poor Whitey & Brownie!
  19. I'm assuming that the pregnant dog came from a pound already pregnant and if that is the case it is relevant that in Victoria a pregnant dog is not allowed to be rehomed pregnant, their pregnancy must be aborted and the bitch desexed before rehoming. I would imagine that there are a LOT of pregnant dogs who are unclaimed. I know that Wodonga Dog Rescue have rescued quite a number of bitches who have shown to be pregnant when they were desexed. If a bitch whelps in the shelter/pound neither she nor her pups can be rehomed.
  20. and she certainly did do what she wanted, for 75 minutes OMG - what a hornbag! Oh Trish you have no idea, Let's just Fern and I are no longer friends !! :D
  21. I found, with rescue litters, that once they started trying to eat Mum's food they were ready.

  23. Does anyone know who was Junior in Show? Hagen, the new import, was run off for Group again and was Junior in Group.
  24. Yep that is who Daphne was playing with - I wish I'd realised! :D
