  1. Anyone???? Really need help on the best way to deal with the yard.
  2. We've just found out that our lovely cat's skin problems which we had been told for 18 months were due to stress are actually a hyper-sensitivity to fleas so we have to completely flea treat our whole house & yard. The vet is boarding her for us and has told us she is not sending her back until we've treated it as everyone loves Jessie. This is our plan: Completely clean out the house, flea-bomb every room and then vacuum. Wash, sun, throw out pet bedding. Treat every animal. Treat the yard - now the treatment of the yard is the hardest thing - what do we use? If we use lime how do we use it? I would like to be able to use stuff I can buy here in Albury on Sunday so that we can bring Jessie home - any other suggestions? Is there anything that can be bought from rural supply stores that may help? We're also going to treat every dog that comes to our house from the pound with flea treatment 48 hours before it leaves the pound to try to prevent it returning as we need to keep fleas out of our house as much as possible. What else can we do?
  3. OMG I can't believe it. I'm so very sorry - he was a beautiful dog. Too soon.
  4. Not sure what she weighes yet but I would guess between 10 & 20kg.
  5. How much of the Joint Guard do you use? We have a lovely older girl here that needs something to help her out with her stiffness.
  6. How did it go? Did it help? Poor Sari still having her allergy problems. Give her a hug from me.
  7. No he wasn't - funds were insufficient to allow it sadly. A decision was made by Lucas' foster carer that she would keep him herself unless a great home came along - Mossie did and, whilst I didn't do the rehome and don't know the full circumstances - she was fully informed of Sammy's problems and the possibility that Lucas might.
  8. Hi Mossie, Sorry I didn't get back to you last night but I just started a new job on Wednesday working from home and I've been really busy. I understand Sammy's owner rang you and hopefully Alison gave you a call as well. I also spoke with our vet who did Sammy's surgery and she said that Chris Preston is a very good vet and who she often refers local people to when their dogs need this type of surgery. I'm so sorry, for both you and Lucas, that he has hip dysplasia as well. I know you knew that it was a possibility when you adopted him but we all hoped for him, and his brother Ibrah, that Sammy was just the odd man out. If only the vet who vaccinated the pups could find the details of the woman who bred them then we could at least make sure she knows - not sure if it will stop her as there was a Pharoah Hound mix pup in Albury Pound a couple of months ago - but I can at least ensure she knows. I will try to call you over the weekend but I have to work again this weekend. Trish
  9. Having spent a little time with Snoops as a baby I suspect that he is also a naturally thinner greyhound. He has always reminded me VERY much of Bart in looks & bodyshape and Bart is a nightmare to keep weight on. Bart is a very very tall greyhound and one would expect him to weigh 40kg plus but at his best he has been 36kg. He DOES have pressure sores but you can't make a dog eat more than he will eat - he has been thin his entire life and was really difficult to get eating as a puppy (as was Snoops in my house) so I've just accepted that Bart is a skinny greyhound! People who don't know greys think that he is shockingly underweight but he often won't finish his meal - he is healthy and happy and I have learnt to deal with a super skinny dog!
  10. Oh Fifi & Danny - I'm soooo very sorry to hear of your loss and so close to Christmas. Hugs to you all and I hope the Liquid Amber planted in his honour gives you many years of pleasure (they are a favourite tree of mine).

    Cleo

So sorry Horus and hoping that Ellie is doing okay this morning. RIP Cleo.
  12. Archie has a very very heavy coat for a Cavalier to start with and the breeder said once they're desexed it changes again so I'm expecting his coat to become harder to care for now sadly. I can definitely tell that he is losing his puppy coat so we will just keep on top of it - I'm so paranoid about keeping his coat tidy as I always whing about the matted nightmares that come through the pound! I was so disgusted that he had a matt the first time and I blamed my teenage daughter, his owner, for not keeping up to his coat but when it was badly matted again only 2 weeks later, and then 10 days later again I started to wonder. I'm convinced its Bartoo but he is off to a new home tomorrow so hopefully we will see some improvement. I could clip him off but to me it seems like a cop out - I bought a coated breed so therefore I should keep him tidy - maybe I'm just being ridiculously stubborn!
  13. OMG Scarlet - I didn't think of the playing thing!!! Of course - that is what it is! He and Bartoo, the greyhound pup, play non-stop and Bartoo is always grabbing him around the head.... I'm an idiot!!!! Thank you!
  14. Haven't seen him scratching at anything there - its really got me puzzled. I felt soooo bad the first time he had the matted hair behind his ear as I've always been so careful to keep his coat tidy. I have made a firm promise to him and I that I will brush him weekly but it has seemed strange that he has no matting anywhere else at all. He has also been desexed about 6 weeks ago - how quickly would that make his coat change?
  15. Archie the Cavalier is now 11 months old and is very used to being groomed. We are a little slack sometimes with his grooming but he always gets a 15-20 minute brush out at least once a fortnight, though I try for once a week. He has never gone longer than 2 weeks without a good brush through. He has a very, very thick coat for a Cavalier - he has always been a "fluffy" puppy. Our problem is that three times now we have needed to clip ear behind just one of his ears but he hasn't had matts anywhere else. His ear doesn't smell, doesn't appear to have a discharge at all and there hasn't been anything caught in his fur. The matt is always tiny - about 2cm square - but too matted to brush out and simpler to just clip off. Would there be a reason for it happening constantly behind one ear?
  16. I can testify to Zana's beautiful nature. I have always been a frightened of GSDs but it was impossible to be frightened of her. She was so gentle and trusting and yet so happy. I was looking at some video footage I took on Monday night at shepmax's house when I was feeding her dogs whilst she was away and still can't believe she is gone, it was so sudden. RIP Zana you were one of a kind.
  17. Oh Rysup - I am so very very sorry!!! Thinking of you and yours - as Fifi said, too many young ones lately
  18. Thanks for that Jed! Much appreciated. I'm off to feed them all again now so will see how she goes.
  19. Jellybean the 5 1/2 week old mastiff pup was returned to us on Friday. She is a sweet little pup who is quite easy and very active. However, not only was she the runt of the litter but she was removed from her mother at 4 weeks of age maximum, possibly younger. We are still trying to ascertain exactly what happened and may not know for a while so I'm going with possibly earlier. She is quite underweight & full of worms so we have wormed her and are feeding her small amounts regularly HOWEVER . When fed with the other pups she is, quite understandably, a savage little beast - I have been removing her from the food for a second with a sharp "argh" and then letting her back - tonight she didn't growl at all  . Do you think that is because of what I did or because she is realising that she gets fed regularly or a combination of the two???? Given that she has no mum I have to try to get this very "right" to prevent issues in the future. She is running with the litter of pups I have here during the day (they are about a week older than her) and sleeping with either another pup or an adult dog at night. Also - with starved pups - do they ever learn not to gorge themselves????? Twice we've fed her during the day with the other pups and she just keeps eating until she looks like she is going to explode. The other pups, who've been raised here their whole lives will stop eating when they're full and leave some in their bowls - she would just keep eating. She is also very very small for her age and considering the size of her mother. Do pups like this catch up or is she likely to always be smaller? I know I should know the answers to these questions but I've never had a runt puppy before in my litters.
  20. I have a 4 month old greyhound pup here who has just been returned to us - he is currently screaming in his crate in the loungeroom. Luckily I know that if I ignore him for a little while he will curl up and go to sleep - he is already starting to quieten for short periods. Its kind of like controlled crying with a new baby - they're normally not used to sleeping on their own, they're in a new home - its all just too scarey and too new. In a week's time you'll be pleased you stood firm.
  21. I must confess to have two options - the first is a very loud, very gruff "OYYYY". That will normally shut up all of my dogs EXCEPT for Mac the annoying. Mac is partially blind and thinks that everything on this planet is worth barking at - our solution with Mac is to just bring him inside and put him in his crate - he loves it and calms right down. When in our front yard he doesn't bark even a quarter as much as he does in the backyard - no reason why that we can figure. The usual methods of preventing barking just don't work with Mac when he has a good bark up so bringing him inside is the simplest solution for neighbours and ourselves. When we're not home he is always crated - when we're home he is outside unless he has a barking fit. With new foster dogs, if the OYYYY doesn't work I will use my patented (NOT) Coke Can of Doom. This is an empty coke can, filled with tiny pebbles which I bash into my computer desk, my kitchen counters etc when the dogs can't see me - shuts pretty much all of them up very quickly - they just can't quite work out where the noise is coming from. I have a new foster here though who doesn't appear phased by the Coke Can of Doom - time will tell, she only arrived a few hours ago and everything is very new.

    Trez

Oh Pandii - I must live on another planet sometimes and hadn't realised what had happened. I'm so sorry - I know from our conversations previously how hard you tried with this boy - sometimes it is the kindest decision we can make.
  23. I have a few lovely pics of him Hannah - PM your email address and I'll send them through.
