With respect dogdude, how do you know its something i've never trained for? I have two dogs that are considered 'trial ready' (not just by me but by others who do trial) but don't trial bcause of lack of time and interest on my part. I still train them and push them and me to improve in all areas, the same as those who do trial. I didn't disagree wth anything others said with regards to resolving Seita's problem, i only questioned the statement that you can't use an e collar and training in drive. You say 'some portray themselves as knowing everything about dogs'- haven't seen anyone in this thread profess to know everything and like i said before, clients of mine who trial also attend other clubs to ensure i don't miss anything with regards to trial etiquette etc- I already stated that i don't know as much as others about trialling but i don't think that makes my opinion invalid.

Congratulations Would have loved to have seen it on video.

I don't disagree Kavik hence why my first post suggests randomising exercises first and if that doesn't work, giving a well timed correction. There was other good advice that followed from others which I didn't feel the need to add to. dogdude, i have trialled and didn't like it for various reasons. (am i one of the 'juinior' trainers you refer to?) We also only get 3 out of 4 Sundays without work (yes every Saturday for the whole year except Xmas and Easter is booked) so time is definitely a factor as well. If it was something i loved, I would make the time- but its not. I do definitely agree that others know more about trialling than i do but i don't think that makes my opinion invalid. I have dogs in my classes whose owners aim to trial and i don't train them any differently- i just remind them of some of the trial etiquette required and they also attend other clubs to make sure they know ALL the ins and outs as there are some i do not know. I simply disagreed that you can't use training in drive and an e collar- i did not recommend the OP get one to fix this small training problem! Oh, and geat to hear that Seita's round Ptlomy saw was excellent!

Abandoment Training For Dog Aggression
Cosmolo replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ihave dealt with many aggressive dogs- aggressive to dogs and/ or people and i have NEVER had to 'string one up until they pass out'. Tell me Rex- what does a dog who has passed out actually learn? And yes I do use corrections- but not like that. I hate the fact that people may think because i say i use corrections that i would be the same as someone who advocates cutting off a dogs oxygen supply. -
Ocd - Hyperactive - Head Strong

Sometimes you need to be able to stop all the craziness so that you have something to reward. Many dogs like whats being described won't offer you something good on their own while they're interacting with you. I would have a lead on in the house so you can stop the things he is doing first and then start to provide rewards whether it be through clicker training or anything else. I have seen pugs like this and while the ones i have met have been hard work, they have also been very intelligent and easy to motivate- once you get through craziness! -
I said just shoot me

I don't think i'm touchy at all dogdude I just disagreed with something you said. I didn't suggest the OP go out and buy an e collar either.

Abandoment Training For Dog Aggression
Cosmolo replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for that Practicality might be an issue- it would be okay when its set up but i wonder how they carry it over when going for a normal walk and encountering a dog. I don't think its teaching the dog that you'll abandon them or won't stand by them in a fight . I think it would just be a well conditioned cue word for the dog to come with you, same as teaching a look command really well. -

No, haven't tried it and hadn't heard of it before. Would need some clarification- i read it as the dog aggressive dog approaches the other dog, at the first sign that the dog is going to aggress, drop the lead by throwing it at the dog and run away using conditioned cue word? You'd want to have conditioned the response to the cue word incredibly well for an exercise like this to be safe. Its not something i would do- especially with one of my dogs as the test dog. -
Yes but why would you set things up where you know you will change the rules? Thats very different to changing things because you make mistakes or because circumstances change. I think the other thing is that some dogs would be more forgiving with this than others. Some dogs will be much more difficult to stop mouthing and do not self inhibit and then stop as they get older. This is particularly true of dogs who are bred to use their mouths in some way- they find it much more difficult to switch it off as adults if it is allowed as puppies. I believe in giving dogs an outlet to use their mouth- just not on me. To each their own but i don't believe the softness of my dogs mouths and bite inhibition has anything to do with whether i let them mouth a person or not. I think its safer for the vast majority of people AND the vast majority of dogs to teach no mouthing.

Still Shedding Heaps After Visit To Groomer :(

When you booked the dog in to be groomed, what were you told would be done? What were your expectations? -
And thank you weisnjac- as it was one of the breeders you recommended

Why can't you combine training in drive and an e collar used on low stim? I have..

I don't believe humans are the best teachers of bite inhibition for a start. I think alot of bite inhibition is learned when a pup is with their litter and mother. My dogs have very soft mouths except one (and its not an issue as she doesn't mouth/ bite anything but toys) and all have been raised with a no mouthing on people rule. I also think this concept can be very confusing as what you consider to be too hard will always vary- depending on where the dog mouths, what clothing you have on and who you are- child, adult, elderly person- i think this is VERY confusing for a dog, especially because you will then change the rules when the dog is an adult. Dogs don't grow out of behaviours that become rewarding. In the same way i wouldn't grow out of sitting on a certain chair if someone gave me $100 every time- each time i wanted $$ i would go and sit on the chair. ETA ML- do you think you are teaching true bite inhibition though- or that you have just taught the dog in that specific situation that mouthing hard ends the game? To me, this is difference to bite inhibition and the dog having a soft mouth

Do any breeders find typical temperament differences between males and females?

Advice For A Friends Dog -
Cosmolo replied to becandcharch's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Everyone listens to both of us in this house. Although when certain family members come over, they can't help but try to yell commands at the dogs- which they promptly ignore until we quietly ask them to get on their bed etc. Their refusal to comply with over the top commands says more than we ever could. -
Don't mind at all- Lots of reasons We wanted a small dog who is active, robust and energetic enough to keep up with our existing dogs, intelligence and boldness were qualities high on the list. We have seen lots of JRT's- some are brilliant little dogs and others that had plenty of potential. Their looks do appeal to us as well but this is of course secondary. There were a few other breeds we had considered at different stages but the Jack's certainly won out. There are other breeds we would like to own too (Alaskan Malamutes high on the list) and at some point in our lives hopefully we will!

Dog Fight, What To Put On Punture Wounds?
Cosmolo replied to Missymoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor you Dog fights are horrible. Definitely go to the vet though- i had a friend whose dog was attacked and she couldn't see any punctures- a few days later he was swollen up like a balloon as a tiny puncture she had not seen had become infected. Hope everything is okay. -

Yes definitely professional help. There's no shame in seeking help with a dog problem. Unfortunately lots of people think they just should be able to deal with their dog- would be like me saying i just should be able to fix my plumbing or electrics.
