Check Chain Or Halti?
Cosmolo replied to all that glitters's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had a lovely GSD in class today working very nicely on a ROGZ martingale collar, but as with any tool, you need to be shown how to use it properly. I have had clients who have been using a particular tool for months with no result- not because of the tool but because of the technique accompanying it. With any type of correctional collar, its important that the handler gets the technique right before accidentally desensitising them to a correction. I get all baby pups to stay on a flat collar for as long as possible while the owners learn good handling skills and then if needed progress to a correctional collar of some kind. -
Is separation anxiety common with pointers?

(uk) Eleventh Hour Mercy Plea To Save Death Row Dog Bruce
Cosmolo replied to shel's topic in General Dog Discussion
Horrifying. I can't imagine what i would do or how i would feel if someone just showed up and tried to take one of my dogs, let alone seeing the condition of the dog months later like that. And now they're going to kill him -
Fantastic! I wonder how often in a week Rhonda trains her dogs on a course?
-
I wouldn't do anything about it if the pup is playing with his toys and barks at these times. If the pup starts to do it more frequently or inappropriately- you can start to teach a quiet command.
-
How often is he barking in play and how long does it last?

I would suggest contacting Mark Singer if you're in SA. Good luck

Buying An Ecollar To Give Consistent Corrections
Cosmolo replied to kamuzz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If you have poor timing, an e collar is not going to be a cure all. I do find though that when given proper instruction, owners that i have recommended e collars to find it the easiest tool to use. -
Could someone give me a link for a good BARF website to get started or a good (not too confusing) thread on DOL? Need to provide some info to a friend

A good behaviourist will be skilled at recognising if their are problems and how to deal wth them even if the behaviour does not present within a session. Aside from anything else, it might put you at ease. Possible that it is just play- but you need to be certain to know how to proceed.

Huski, i am a little confused. It might just be the cold weather- freezing my feet and my brain!) Do you train differently to when you walk? If so, why?
-
I know Huski, i have the same problem with the raw thing! But, it really does help if you can work out how to do it. Completely up to you but would be good to see short video of her alone vs her when Misha's there too. I don't think giving a correction thats going to pull her off her feet is the way to go at all, but some kind of effective correction might be appropriate- depending on whats effective for her.
-
Take something really high value with you for use only when you're walking with Misha. This would be my first port of call, with jackpot rewards (i'd use her whole meal for that day) for really excellent efforts from her. Can you video what she does and post it?
-
Why don't you treat her much on walks huski?

What food rewards do you normally use for Daisy?
-
What do you normally do when daisy pulls on the lead? (in normal training/ when she's by herself)

I mean have you ever had them in a class together? Most dogs will behave differently with dog friends not just because they are distracted by each other but also because the consequences are not the same as when you have them separate. Consistency and timing of any rewards and corrections (if you use them) needs to be the same as when they are separate. Easier said than done!
-
Have you ever taken them to dog training and handled them together? How do they respond to commands at home together?

Sin Binning - Does It Work?
Cosmolo replied to WildatHeart's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It worked with Cosmo too for agility. She truly knew all the obstacles but would then get so excited she would stop listening as she wanted to do the next obstacle so much. 2 time outs was all it took for significant improvements in reliability. -
Congrats TSD- thats fantastic!!!

At 8 months old, if its truly motion sickness (not anxiety at being in the car) he won't outgrow it in my opinion. The other suggestions here are all good ones to try.

Have you spoken to the neighbours?

molasseslass- do you have a link to the Australian veterinary Chiros opinion on h/c's? Would be interesting to read.

I understand its not viable for most clubs as its more expensive but i have insurance that specifically states we will be training and coming into contact with restricted breeds AND dangerous dogs. Its not always that someone dislikes certain breeds- it can definitely relate to their insurance.
