Just looking at your website- do you have a discount for DOLers? Is there a code or something?
-
I definitely want a few of these! I will have to look back through the thread and see exactly whats available. This is great- i thought you could only get these from America and they are Cosmo's favourite toys!!

I would call the trainer who will be taking your pre school class and ask if its possible to arrive early to the class and discuss with him/ her then. Its very hard to say without seeing whats happening- its not uncommon for people to misinterpret play but also not uncommon for pups to be too rough/ over the top with older dogs. I have an adult dog here that ended up with holes in his face from a playful puppy simply because he would not tell the puppy off or show any kind of discomfort when the pup was play mouthing with him- his pain threshold is through the roof in many ways. As soon as we realised what was happening we intervened but not ALL adult dogs will correct a puppy- even when they absolutely should. And this was puppy play that looked as normal and lovely as it gets!

What anita said  I tend not to agree with trainers who are very limited in one way- whether thats 'all positive' OR 'all corrections'. Balance and flexibility in training is very important.

Thanks steve, i will have a look!

Does anyone know of any good canine nutrition courses?
-
I am referring to individual dogs and handlers Kelpie i- not generalising about a type of aggression. And agree that the dog should understand what the correction is for and what behaviour was/ is required.
-
And thats great Kavik Different things work for different people and different dogs.

I think there are a few concepts being thrown around here that are getting intertwined I don't think dealing with an aggression issue is neutralising the dog- the dog already has some value for dogs at this point. Socialisation means different things to different people too. Some prefer there dogs to have a positive value for dogs and others don't- i don't think either is right or wrong, just different. I like my dogs to play with other social dogs so choose to socialise rather than neutralise but also ensure my training is at a level where my dogs do not ignore me to seek out and play with other dogs. I do believe that a combination of appropriate rewards and corrections can be very successful in dealing with some cases of aggression without creating a ticking time bomb, if the handler knows what to do, when to do it and ensures the dog is taught what to do, not just what not to do.

My dogs are socialised with dogs- friendly and playful when i allow but quite capable of ignoring dogs at other times. I use a balance of rewards and some corrections in my training and my dogs are well balanced and happy

I just taught Cosmo to lie down/ curl up in a washing basket! Pretty good considering she is 20kg and has lanky legs!! -
I would definitely go to the Rotti club

Not every method will suit very dog, problem and situation. Finding the right trainer for you can be difficult but well worth it when you hit on the right techniques for you and your dog. Great picture in your avatar- cute puppy. -

You will find that some of us need to be careful about any comments on a public forum where you have named the company.. However, i do think putting a tarp around to block the dogs view is quite an ineffective way to deal with any problem and have never heard of anyone doing that before. Have you discussed your concerns with the trainer? I too would be worried about a large breed dog slipping around on hard floors while training. There are many training techniques to choose from and you may want to seek someone who uses a combination of positive reinforcement and appropriate corrections if you feel the positive only is not working for you. ETA no i don't think you are ignorant. I always say to people that training should make sense and seem logical when explained. If things do not appear this way, often there is something not quite right. -

Did the trainer give any other techniques to you? There are many, many other things that can be tried but what is used will vary depending on the dog so internet advise is not wise. Dog aggression can be modified in the vast majority of cases with the right techniques. We are holding a practical workshop in Sydney in early June- your little man may be a good candidate for this too. Perhaps others here can recommend a trainer experienced with aggression issues in your area to get started sooner? -

I really feel for you flying furball What did the trainer suggest to you when you first got him? How long did you try this for? What do you walk him on? When a dog is great at obedience, not so good in the streets/ at home, i find private training is the best answer as the trainer can work where you spend the most time. Deelee posted a great supportive thread recently that had some good information- i can't find the link but maybe someone else can. -
Wow shoey- awesome stuff! He reminds me a bit of Dexter in the way that he works- except yor stands are a million times better!!!!

I did some more tonight- shaped Cosmo on a dining chair with paws over the back of the chair and nsoe between paws- so praying on the dining chair! Super cute!! We went to do fetching tissue from box but started off with tissue in box and she just fetched the whole box!! Think i might have to start that one with the tissue by itself! We put opening the cupboard on cue tonight too I am a very proud Mum!!
