Does anyone know where you can get Uncle Albers from in Melbournes south east?

There is another thread on this http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=159548 which may help you.

I might tell someone to be firm without meaning they have to change their personality Anthony so i don't think its fair to generalise based on a trainer teling someone to be firm- it might even be being firm with not giving in to a pup (ignoring etc) Being firm doesn't always mean being a dominant seargent major type!! Hope you will have a positive update in a week or two after trying the trainers suggestions

Here's the thing- its all well and good to try and deal with mouthing without a correction but when the puppy is 16 weeks, the behaviour is continuing and getting worse- IMO you are better off providing a couple of appropriate corrections NOW rather than waiting until the pup has practised this behaviour for months. The dog i saw yesterday had been tried with positive methods which had not worked and for most people its very difficult to ignore a dog who is biting their hand- let alone guests and strangers in the street. Have you been taught about extinction bursts? Here's what can often happen when you try to extinction train/ ignore mouthing- - Puppy approaches and begins mouthing - Owner ignores - Puppy goes through normal extinction burst and thus bites harder (behaviour gets worse before it gets better) - Owner unable to ignore completely as it hurts and pulls hand away/ makes noise etc - Puppy learns that biting harder will get desired result. Giving a puppy a correction to teach them that biting is unacceptable and then redirecting them onto a toy would be totally appropriate- but you need someone to show you the correct way to do this.

I would strongly suggest you engage a trainer to perhaps come to the home and assist with such issues. I saw a 9 month old dog today who has been jumping and mouthing since a puppy and it hasn't gotten any better despite them trying a number of things suggested to them previously. The dog improved within the session by identifying what technique would work best for the dog and them and i think given your pup is 16 weeks, so no longer a baby pup, it would be better to get the help straight away- particularly with a breed that can be known for their mouthiness and where you have 3 adults in the home- potentially doing different things when the behaviour occurs!

Because there wouldn't be too many people who made a phone call and said that? And you have a link to Pawsitive AS- which i am assuming is where they would have called.

I understand the purpose of the thread and maybe i am just paranoid but i always think what if the caller found DOL and found this thread? They probably wouldn't feel the greatest

I don't think its sad because this dog's owner made the phone call Many do not

What about Natures Gift? Could combo biscuits and wet?

We are just starting young dogs classes at Warringal/ Heidelberg (for pups from 4 months) which would suit- but they are a Wednesday evening? I don't know of any puppy classes around that area but maybe contact Four Paws to see if they have more suitable times at a convenient location?

Whie it is a developmental phase- many dogs do not grow out of it because the behaviour becomes fun. I know many adult dogs who still continue to mouth because they have never been stopped. My preference for most pups is to provide a correction of some kind and then 30-60 seconds later, redirect to a toy that they can chew. The type and level of correction varies from puppy to puppy- are you attending puppy school? Most mother dogs generally would not ignore a 'rude' mouthing puppy- they would warn and then correct if the warning was not heeded.

Tire Jump Incident - Youtube Video
Cosmolo replied to sas's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Some of the videos are sickening. Not that i compete now but i have never seen a dog injured at training so while we must be careful and train appropriately- it shouldn't make everyone too fearful. Kelpie chick-are you able to elaborate on what was taught at the GB seminar with regards to the tyre? -

Thats part of my dreams S+T Its a long way off- but baby steps i keep telling myself. Its hard to change what someone has been doing for many years- so whirlwind revolutions don't happen unfortunately -

Professional Trainers In Here Please!
Cosmolo replied to a topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I definitely start teaching stay in small increments to those pups who are ready. Why keep an exercise the same and boring for pups who are intelligent and quick to learn and mature? Whats the reason not to? -
"behaviouralist" -- What Does That Mean
Cosmolo replied to sandgrubber's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Kavik- i have used one for dog aggression and dog excitability issues with exceptional success but the training is always started without any other dog in the picture so that the dog learns how to respond to the e collar with no other dog present. -

I get what you're saying Anita. But- in a recent discussion a trainer gave me her opinion in a different way to what i had heard before which prompted me to ask a few questions etc. I can't see how this is a bad thing. Although- i do think demos are the best way to get a point across. And when we get a new video camera, i might do just that! -
