Shaping- What Have You Taught?
Cosmolo replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How many people lure to start with? I thought that was cheating so i gritted my teeth and didn't do it -
Inspired by my recent successes with Cosmo (as i posted in the brags thread) I am interested to know what everyone else has taught just by shaping? And if there were any positive or negative side effects that came from the shaping?
-
Yep, i have to put my others away too tassie or they try to push in!!

Thanks guys- i get so proud of her (and me for being so patient ) so its nice to tell people who even know what shaping is!!

yay i saw it! Well done- looks brilliant!!!! You have done so much with your dogs since i saw you last- you should be so proud!! I can't see Ed's video either

Not sure if this thread is just for trial wins so sorry if my brag is in the wrong spot.. ;) I have started doing some shaping with Cosmo after slacking off (due to being busy) with her training/ teaching new things for some time. So far we have done a few things- sitting on a tea towel dropping on a tea towel bowing after climbing onto a small plastic box with rounded edges (this one was hard because she had to think so much about where she was putting her feet) climbing onto the dining chair (she struggled with this one despite doing this on command many times before) targetting many different things with her nose pushing the mop off a step and our latest- opening the cupboard door by grabbing a tied towel. This is a huge achievement because she found it so tough- despite the fact that we play tug and other games regularly. I have noticed that shaping seems to have had some unexpected side effects- Cosmo is cuddlier than before and seeks attention more often (in a good way- she has always been independent and can be indifferent to us at times) she seems more confident with sudden noises and movements, She is much more willing to offer behaviours- regardless of what we're doing, she is not as lazy but is still settled and switches on and off well. I feel as though our bond is a bit stronger and we are having more fun together. I feel bad because i have not made the time before (and she's such an easy dog, she's never demanded it) but really pleased i have done so now. Just have to think of more things to teach her!

I can't see it.. And all the comments make me want to see how great Molly is doing even more!!

How is Max going? ;)

Gorgeous!! Congratulations! Do you have a pic of Dad?

Definitely an important part of any puppy class- i cover it every week and get owners to do it in front of me so i can see the dogs progress. I have however seen puppy classes where owners are told specifically not to touch their puppies- everything is to be done with a lure only.

Please Delete-double Up Thread

deelee posted a good supportive thread recently- did you see it? i am not very good at searching for things and finding them so hopefully someone else can post the link! -
If you let him out while he's crying after a few hours, you will teach him to be more and more resistant and vocal. Either need to be 100% consistent or look at other ways of training the pup. Agree with Miranda also.

Reducing Exercise To Assist Separation Anxiety
Cosmolo replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thats all i have been told they said Erny- now by two different people. There was no explanation given and no compensatory exercises to replace such stimulation. As unbelieveable as it sounds, thats what the clients took away from the consult. Of course i am aware that sometimes clients misunderstand or misinterpret advice but it sounded pretty clear cut from their re telling of the advice. -
My Dog Just Attacked Another Dog
Cosmolo replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't see any over reactions. DOLers get slammed on here all the time (usually in general) for incidents like this. It concerns me that although there was no visible injury, there may have been bruising etc- did you tell them they needed to take the dog to the vet to be checked. Having seen a few fights/ attacks- i know from experience that just because an injury is not visible doesn't mean its not there. I too would consider having the dog assessed as there may be other issues at play. Talk to the agility instructors next time you go and ask them what they think about safely training the dog in agility around other dogs. Safety first but i don't see any reason why you couldn't continue doing agility in a safe and controlled environment -
I don't think there is much of a size difference to be concerned about either Not your normal sized belgian With things going as well as they are, they should be fine.

Underdog Sydney And Canberra Workshops/ Seminars
Cosmolo replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Bump- unfortunately due to the venue double booking the canberra venue is going to change. As soon as we have confirmed the new venue, i will post it here as well as sending it in confirmation emails. Places remain in all events although the temp testing workshop is filling fast. -
Very insensitive aren't you Midol?

Does anyone else find that the level the dogs can feel is in line with the level their owners can feel? eg- the first dog i had that could feel level one on the innotek, her owner could do and i hadn't had anyone else who could feel level one!

Nope really Erny that was it- oh and to throw water on the dog when it howls. Totally agree re the leadership- anxiety link, although in some cases even when leadership is rectified, the anxiety stiill remains as elements have become learned.
