Yes, yes and yes. But sadly- unless point of sale is more controlled i just can't see how its going to happen. People don't understand what is normal behaviour for a dog, let alone normal behaviour for the breed they chose or the individual dog they have. :D

I have alot of conflict about Caesar.. On the one hand i think promoting exercise and training generally is a good thing. On the other hand, i am seeing dogs being labelled as dominant (through Caesar definitions) by owners and owners attempting Caesar like techniques. At best they do it clumsily and the dog doesn't care, at worst, they get bitten or traumatise the dog. This isn't limited to Caesar though- i have heard many disturbing stories about advice from other trainers- the difference is that Caesar can be so far reaching due to his profile. There is alot of area in between cuddles and food and cutting a dogs air supply- they aren't the only two options. I think we need to start recognising the realities of things like owner limitations as well-most people cannot replicate what they see and/ or are even trained to do. So we need to be careful about the techniques we put out there- regardless of whether a dog trainer can do them effectively to benefit the dog. The question is- can the owner?

Go and see the puppy- Its possible that at 11-12 weeks the pup is great and well socialised. Or its possible that it is a ball of nerves with issues. Personally if you have not had a multi dog household before, i'd go male- female. Every dog is different yes but one of each sex is generally 'safer'. (and i say that despite running 3 bitches and 2 dogs together) SO much depends on the experience of the person in charge- and by experience, i mean experience with multi dog households.

Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?

So so disrespectful. It is not your business. It is not your livelihood. Its NOT your decision!! -
Ever Snuck The Dog Into A Motel?
Cosmolo replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
Businesses have the right to decide their own rules relating to everything that goes on within their establishment. Whether its dogs or anything else, deliberately flaunting the rules is so disrespectful. What gives people the right to do whatever they like in someone else's business- that they have worked for? I find that as much of an issue as the dog side of things. -
I wouldn't rule out a well bred Jack Russell terrier. They are not little maniacs that need copious amounts of exercise- provided they are from a good breeder who matches pups carefully. My rough coat JRT doesn't shed as much as my other short coat dogs, although he does still shed a bit. I would suggest discussing the older dogs 'issues' with the breeder of any pup so they can choose a pup more likely to get along with the older dog too.

Positive Dog Training In Melbourne?

I see it VERY regularly Corvus. I am with Nekhbet on this one too- by the time you have shaped the mouthing away, the kids are terrified of the dog, the adults are avoiding him or giving him everything he wants etc. Mouthing is one behaviour that needs to be stopped quickly and definitively IMO. Dogs need to learn bite inhibition- but NOT on people. 3 of my dogs have lovely soft mouths- and all were taught NEVER to put their mouth on people. 1 other has a great mouth but we adopted her as a 12 month old and the other is an ex working cattle dog with quite a hard mouth generally but also taught never to mouth people.

YES, YES and YES. If you stop her from doing it for a few weeks and it doesn't cease, i would consider getting a behaviourist. Tail chasing left unchecked can become a very serious problem.

Personally i think JRT's get a really bad rap. Yes they need training, socialisation and stimulation. Yes they like their exercise and need to be taught an off switch. But they really are quite easy dogs to own IF you meet those requirements and by the sounds of it, you certainly do. My 7 month old JRT simply fits in with us- active when we are, calm and settled when we are. Do remember though that it is difficult to tell what a cross breed pup will be like as an adult so the pup may turn out differently to what you expect anyway.

The puppy factories are inspected regularly by local councils- not RSPCA. Someone has to report cruelty for the RSPCA to act- which means they have to see it. The puppy farmers aren't idiots- they don't often show the general public through the hell hole elements of their property.

Steve what do you advocate? What is the MDBA's position on all of these issues and what action do they believe should be taken if any? I am trying to get past the accusations and conspiracy theories (true or not) to get to what everyone would like to see done INSTEAD. ETA i agree with schnauzer- i believe every dog has the right to a happy life.

Personally i don't think the combining of multiple issues (rolling them all into one) like what has happened in this thread is beneficial. Why can't we instead create new threads to discuss each individual issue and how it might be resolved. Perhaps starting each thread with relevant legislative differences for each state so that there is no confusion. Does anyone else think this may work better than bickering back and forth? I do NOT want to be dismissive of breeders concerns- but i also don't think breeders should be dismissive of others point of view either. I just thought i would re post this in case anyone is interested.

Yes thats true- although the push for new laws is already happening, they didn't need a public rally for that. But it most certainly not about getting rid of registered breeders as many seem to think. I cannot believe there is so much opposition to getting puppies out of pet shops and cracking down on the factory farming of dogs on this forum. The Victorian legislation is a disaster as it sits at the moment for dog laws across the board- i think that we can all agree on. Reform needs to happen- the question is, who is going to push that reform and who will have input. Included in that reform can and should be adjustments to the way the RSPCA investigates and prosecutes cases. Oscars Law is one push. That does not mean it ends there with what they are asking for- the process will be ongoing and NOW is the perfect time to put forward detailed alternatives that address the issues without the negative spin off you are suggesting will happen. Simply saying- no that one is wrong won't be good enough. Can someone please provide me with evidentiary links regarding ALV's stance on registered breeders and the desire to ban ALL breeding of animals. Thanks.

Oakway what do you mean by "we are all aware it didn't end up that way"? There was NOTHING bad mentioned about registered breeders at the rally AND i spoke to many people who were there with pedigree dogs and support registered breeders- you know what they were asking- why Dogs Victoria was not there. I did not hear one person talking about infringing upon ethical registered breeders and if you are concerned that this will happen anyway through unintentional knock on effects, why not TALK to these people and the legislators? This thread is an amazing eye opener to me. I understand breeders are concerned- but i just don't think messages like whats in this thread are the right way to deal with such concerns. If i was a member of the public reading this thread i think i would be scared off registered breeders for some time. You don't need to have a go at people to make your point and express your concerns. I would like to know though- which of the following is the concern? That any new legislation will adversely effect registered breeders although they are not the intended target OR that "these people" are going after registered breeders and want to eliminate all breeding? I agree that the RSPCA's role needs to be re evaluated too. But although they were there- the rally was not organised by, or about the RSPCA, Judy Gard, Dangerous dog legislation or anything else. It was to raise public awareness about WHERE their dogs are coming from.

Your puppy is a baby. A baby who has come into a brand new home. Even if the breeder had done some toilet training- it is normal for some regression in new environments- the puppy is a baby. Have you spoken to the breeder about the worms? Pups do need to be wormed frequently so you would have needed to worm the pup in a few weeks anyway- and will still need to do so. What surface was she toileting on at the breeders? If it was concrete or a hard surface, you will need to re train to grass or wherever you want the pup to go. Do you still feed her when she is over excited and jumps at you? If so, stop and wait till she settles. It is a bonus to have a food motivated pup but you have to learn how to use it to your advantage.
