  1. Woohoo Tammy! She is such an awesome old chook! It was hilarious to watch her when she knew where the treats were, nothing would deter her from getting one, her eyesight isn't that bad!
  2. Ours tend to just have a run around the house/yard but also love a walk. Patch prefers a short walk - he will literally put on the brakes and refuse to go any further if he has had enough Takes a lot of coaching and encouragement to get him moving again. He would do fine in an apartment as long as there are a selection of comfy couches. It is hilarious to watch him when he gets a little crazy though - he spins in circles (with Oscar the iggy barking to spur him on). Lilly is younger and prefers more exercise than Patch, but still not too much! Her latest effort that I am trying to put a stop to is jumping onto a couch, spinning, and then leaping off to chase one of the others - they get herded outside when that starts!
  3. yes I would think fostering greyhounds is not for you. Yes doesn't sound like they are what you are wanting in a dog. My two are very different to each other (there is also a large age difference but the older one has always had a calmer personaility). My guys like a walk, one will go for longer than the other (he will literally stop in the middle of the road and refuse to move) and yes, they sleep a lot (Patch decided to grace us with his presence at 1:55 pm on Sunday, wasn't even keen on brekkie), but they also have bouts of playfullness and silliness where they run around like loons and pounce on toys. We also get an abundance of cuddles and licks from one (whose eyes literally light up when she sees you), and calm and gentle love and warmth from the other.
  4. My sister got two kittens from a pet shop under a variation of this theme "Oh, they're sick and the pet shop was going to have them put to sleep so I bought them to save their lives" She can't even blame a lack of education- I knew she'd been looking for a pet so I'd spent several hours (only a few weeks previously) discussing options with her and she'd agreed rescue was the way to go. And then she gets kittens from a pet shop anyway  Some people can adjust the realities of any situation to make themselves feel better about doing questionable things. My brother did this with a pup - he knew about buying from a pet shop (or byb) and my feelings on it. He told me he bought her from a breeder (a byb - she isn't pure by any stretch). My dad slipped up later and I found out he did buy her from a pet shop, he purposely didn't tell me.

    Giardia

Yes one of mine had it and I think it was treated with metronidazole (can't remember exactly but it sounds familiar). It took us a long time to get a diagnosis (first few samples weren't fresh enough to detect it so we were treating other things) neither of our others got it though His only symptom was a really gurgly stomach at 4 and 5 in the morning.
  6. My Oscar gets all offended if hubby gives me a kiss or a cuddle and gives him a right telling off.
  7. Lilly is my husbands little girl - he just adores her. Really, I think Lilly is a bit of a tart though and would happily be anyones, but I don't tell him that ;)
  8. Oscar started sleeping in our bed when my husband finally caved when we were tried to crate train him  Now he hates it and wants him out, but it doesn't worry me. He generally starts off in his own bed but sneaks in of a night. Aside from barring access (and I can imagine the tantrums) I am not sure what I can do? Lilly gets up in the morning after breakfast. She usually tries to get up at least once a night but I send her back to her bed - she just takes up too much room!
  9. I am so sorry Jac. She was a beautiful girl, a really special one and it was obvious from your writing about her, what a truly special bond you two had.
  10. One of mine has a sensitive tummy - I switched them all onto Royal Canin Sensitive and they did really well but I switched them to Black Hawk (a bit cheaper). The other 2 did great (and condition wise look better than they ever have), but he wasn't 100% on it so I have put him on Eagle Pack lamb and rice, its not a sensitive one but he is doing great.
  11. Cool, I didn't know that you could do them from Sydney harbour. We went with SOSSA: http://www.sossa-int...s/TripDates.htm They have a small boat that isn't that fast, so it takes about 2 hours to get out there, then they putt around for about 3-4 hours catching birds, and then they head back again. It's $100 for non-members. We went in September 2008 and have been meaning to do more ever since. OH wants to go in the winter to see jaegers. But maybe we should try Hal's trip to compare. Gorgeous photos! What size lens? I have been meaning to do a SOSSA trip forever! I am slightly concerned that I will spend the whole trip throwing up though
  12. In my experience, the black female greyhounds are almost always total airheads. Friendly, outgoing and gorgeous girls but not a brain cell to spare between them Yep Lilly fits that description - wants to love everyone (whether they want love or not) and a total ditz
  13. It's not exactly a new or unknown problem, there are actually some reacue groups that rehome just the blacks. http://www.blackpearldogs.com/ Blacks make up a substantial proportion of greyhounds (I can't remember the exact percentage but it's over 60%) and the blacks have always been the hardest for us to rehome. I actually have a small pile of applications on my desk right now, all of them set aside because they wanted "unusual" or "pretty" or "rare" coloured dogs (sadly, those are some of the actual words used in the applications)- and the current foster girl is just black. The colours people prefer in greyhounds seem to be fawn and blue, in particular, parti colour fawn or blues. We've actually only ever had two parti dogs, one of those was white with black (although she was cat-safe so rehomed very quickly) and the other was white and fawn (the greyhound on the right in my signature) but she failed small dog testing twice and was not suitable for rehoming. It's really quite disappointing that people would still prefer looks over temperament, our current foster is a lovely girl (very intelligent, gets along beautifully with other dogs and she's very people-oriented) but as soon as you tell people what colour she is, the interest in her disappears completely. Yep I have a blue and white boy and a black girl. When we go out Patch gets all the love and Lilly gets largely ignored :D Both have fabulous temperaments (though total opposites - Patch is calm, quiet and pretty independent, Lilly is so friendly, excitable and loves people) but Patch is the one who gets approached the most. We were only commenting last night about how great Lilly looks at the moment, she is glossy and shiny - alas I suck at taking photos of her
  14. I had dogtech come out to us when we first got Oscar as crate-training wasn't working. Instead of helping me with my problem she focused on our other dog and told me he was highly anxious - something he most definitely is not. She was big on the tethering inside trick as well. When she left I thought I had this dog with massive problems (and not the one I sought help for), but after I sat and thought about it I realised that I didn't and I simply disregarded her advice.
  15. Many years ago now when my husband was still living at home, they had an awesome beagle called George. I can remember walking in with my now MIL one night - she had been away for a week and I was there the day before. George totally ignored her and smoothered me with love and licks :D She was most put out that he had picked a favourite person :p
  16. I did obedience with Oscar at South Coast as well and enjoyed it. We stopped when he got unwell, and we were also starting to do a lot of offlead work and my little bugger can't be trusted offlead. I know 4 Paws on here went to both Wollongong clubs so a PM to her will probably give you some good info. Corvus when were you there - I doubt it was the same time as me as I would remember Kivi.
  17. I prefer males generally and our next would probably be another male. Lilly is the only female I have owned and, while she is gorgeous and affectionate and not at all what I expected from a bitch, she can also be a real bitch at times. I don't know if I would be asking for trouble if I took in another female at the same time.
  18. I have had some odd shapes in this batch as well My greys are doing well on it (they are not racers though).
  19. Huga those pics are sensational! Sid looks gorgeous and Lola looks so happy - its wonderful Congrats on the new addition.
  20. Yep sorry I have a licker too She licks the other dogs a little but loves licking us and any visitors. We have tried not giving her attention, reprimanding her, distracting but nothing has worked - she just can't help herself.
  21. This is Lilly exactly! Whenever we want to move off a couch or something or if she wants pats she rolls on to her back like such a classy lady. She is often referred to as the tart of the house.

As i posted on fb Paula, I am so sorry, she was such a special girl I was out last night and happened to check fb, I had to fight back tears Run free Asha
  23. Yep mine are. The greys attract people who want to know about them, if they raced and I am thrilled to say more and more people are coming up and telling me 'i heard they make great pets' Oscar the iggy always attracts people, and while I thought it would usually be women, lots of men actually comment on him. Most people ask if he is a whippet so I explain what he is and they tell me how stunning he is - I think the prance he has really attracts attention. I took him for a run around the uni campus a while back and a bus driver who had stopped on a break on the other side of the road came over to talk to me about him I had to laugh, last week I walked him past some families playing soccer and a young boy said 'hey look at that sausage dog' - don't know how you confuse long iggy legs with little dashie legs
  24. My guys have a variety of coats and also pjs. While they look miserable when I put the pjs on, they are nice and warm The iggy loves to snuggle under blankets and doonas regardless of the heat so he gets covered of a night time (and then he sneaks into our bed) and Lilly also loves a blanket thrown over her if it is cold.
  25. Hubby and I made a couple of phone calls, and this is what we were told. I hope that dogs assessed in other states can be included without re-testing. I can't wait until we can have Harry assessed. Our Harry was race trained apparently, but was too slow. He doesn't care about the cats wondering in our yard, but is interested in our chooks (has never been allowed to run with them), so I would want him assessed before having him unmuzzled. I believe he would pass a test, but would want someone with more experienced than me to judge that. Hopefully I can have that opportunity here in NSW, and have him walking around without the muzzle. He would not be off lead unless, like now, he is in a fully enclosed area and safe from cars, etc. He used to have a penchant for just running as fast as he can, now that he's older, he has better recall, but I wouldn't want to risk it. I'm waiting with baited breath for more news! I made enquiries too Flashsmum - basically GAP NSW don't know too much yet as they are still dealing with the pollies etc. I asked about whether dogs who have been through GAP from other states would be re-tested and they weren't sure yet. But the test is going to be the standard that they use in other states. I believe the test will involve small dogs but not cats or other animals (as well as other things as well).
