  1. people will flame me but i got big shoulders I keep my blades submersed in blue kero 24/7 regularly flush them during use because when they get too dry they bind-up cause the clipper to work too hard, the blade gets hot and reduce blade cutting edge life. I get approx 60 to 80 clips between sharpens and I'm very pleased with that. Chris
  2. Gee I thought 3 year vaccines were a peace offering to stop vets from going under. people how many vaccinations have you had in your life time ?? if you were to be re-vaccinated you would want to be titre tested first wouldn't you ? As an x emergency service worker certain vaccinations were mandatory but they check your immunity level first and if you don't need it you don't have it. Question Why is it different for dogs ???? many dogs develope reactions to overvaccination the list is huge. with no known cure ! Plenty of info in previous threads on this subject.
  3. Our grand old lady Tessy Two Shoes has left us. Fat as a pig and cute as a button she gave us our best puppies that we also had the honour to share with our friends that bought pups from us. She was our baby and she relied on us to do our best for her and love too which we always found easy. she never wanted for much but when she asked you knew what it was she wanted. My Lady and i went and placed her under the gums in a spot she would like. no kennels just open space. A brave girl held on just so that we could say good bye and be with her in her last moment that was her need to know we were there as we had promised her. :D ;)
  4. When using my hydrobath: I always use warm water and I always start at the dogs paws and gently work up the body. I have always done this because I was informed that a dog that died as a result of being washed in cold water. I also believe that this dog had been given anesthetic tab to be washed (one of those dangerous labradores ) Because I used to travel up to Bright and do mobile washes up there I always used warm water as the cold mountain water coming from the tap was colder than ice !! even in summer. I also find that most shampoo's work much better in warmer water. As for lathering up I have noticed if you use the same amount of soap to wash a dirty dog then use the same amount to wash a dog that you know is clean, the soap will lather up more because there is nothing for it to work on, thus allowing me to cut back on the amount of soap required to wash the dog. i.e if the soap is lathering up excessively I cut the amount back. As for the skin irritation thing and the application. Well I have been washing my own hair WRONG all my life. I'm not suprised by people being silent whilst this guy was speaking for it isnt what he was saying it was how he was saying it made it sound so plausible. His ability in public speaking far exceeds his ability to be taken totally seriously about washing dogs. His name wasn't Dr. TEXLER was it ?
  5. So you don't think they should sell foods that treat specific conditions or sell foods to ensure that the animals they see are getting decent nutrition? Ever tried to to explain how to feed your dog to a complete numpty?? You don't think that by having foods available for owners who haven't grasped the whole feed your dog thing correctly is beneficial to the animal? IN SHORT NO !! Thats what pet shops, butchers etc are for complete numpties - yes I talk to them on their own level and treat them with respect ! ETHICS = Do what you are trained for and do it well. I don't think vets are trained sales people are they ?????? As I said doctors leave the sales area well alone. But they can give excellent advice on what is required. Why can't VETS ????
  6. oooch whose the primary carer ???? you or the vet ???? I personally will not allow a vet to bully me into something that I don't want. Change your vet as you would your doctor if you have a difference of opinion and you feel you are right. When you go to a doctors you don't buy your bread and milk their do you ! Vets should practice more about being doctors of vetinary than making every last grab for cash they can. Chris
  7. dogs have a different PH to humans so human shampoo is PH balnced for us and most dog shampoo is balanced for them. My wife uses human on our show Shih's with absolutely no problems. each to their own human or dog that is :D . now I'm told that shih tzu hair is the closest to human hair so my lady uses human shampoo & conditioner BUT make sure it is properly rinsed out this will stop the silicone additive being a problem. silicone left in will cause all kinds of trouble. Every now and then I come across a dog who's hair will not clip so I bath them in green pamolive dishwash liquid first. Chris
  8. Not knowing what area you live in a hydrobath is a must plus a dryer. don't worry about the cost as it will save you so much time and effort. As some one else suggested hire it out let others come wash & dry their own dog for say $10 to $20. I let some people use mine when it is not in use to prepare their dogs before a show or trial. you can always use the bartering system too some are maybe cash strapped and would love to do your dog in return for being able to do theirs in return. I have had people trade us loads of wood for getting work on the dog done etc. Not to mention some of the GR8 people you will come across. Chris
  9. Ok i know that many people will disagree with this but I keep my blades submersed in blue kero 24/7. i rinse the blade in blue kero then wipe the excess off with a rag. If the blade is getting real hot I rinse it in Metho then once it is cool rinse it in the kero b4 i start using it again. Ok why blue kero "it is a very light oil". I only get my skip tooth blades sharpened every 3 months or so as they are the ones that predominantly clip the dirty hair. I do find that some maltese and crosses have what I call a cotton coat and it is very hard to clip no matter what blade you have but I do find a finishing blade better but not always. this would be the only time that I would use a finishing blade on the first clip. Thus I get about 9 to 12 months between sharpens on my finishing blades. i agree with the previous coment about honing wheels wearing and this can be a cause too but it will not just happen with one set of blades. I use Andis clippers and have fantastic service from them. parts can wear i.e not only the tongue of the clipper but also where the tongue fits into the blade can wear too this is normally detected by a very noisey blade and decreased cutting performance. the plastic cover or wear strip on the tension plate can be worn out or missing.
  10. Who sharpens your blades what do they use ? diamond cut paste ? is the tension set properly ? do you regularly rinse clean the blade during use ? what type of dog are you clipping ? does hair get caught between the blades ? Are you clipping a clean dog or dirty ? what type of clipper do you have ? Chris
  11. Quite a few people from the country carry a stick with them to protect themselves and their dog from snakes as well as other loose dogs. Cheers Chris
  12. ACV does make them less palatable to fleas and ticks. It also has many other uses too both pet and human. Like most things though it doesn't work for everyone, some people have no success at all. Some dogs will not drink the water with it in it. This maybe due to them not liking it at all or they can bluff their owner into feeling sorry for them. Cheers Chris
  13. Necks and wings ok but do supervise when you give them to her. Try some doggy tooth paste too. Cheers Chris
  14. Catsmother do you mean lime as in limil that comes in the 20/40 kg bags ? We had used limil extensively for controlling water quality and PH. I would say it could be very dangerous if wrong amounts applied or incorrect application used. We had to use face masks to stop inhalation. I also used to put a thin coating over the top surface of our Well at the time to clear up the water that was used for showers and washing etc. not drinking and cooking though. C.S.R.I.O could possibly have good technical data that maywell help better. I do know some people have applied it to their garden to sweeten up acidic soil especially where pine bark has been applied. Be interesting to here others views. Cheers Chris
  15. I would question that amount of protein in a large breed pup food. I had to change my bloodhound from Pro Plan Puppy for large breeds (34% protein I think from memory) to Eagle Pack Puppy for large breeds (23% protein) as she was getting flat in the feet. Within a week of the change her feet had come back nicely. When we had our first Saints our male was not gaining weight as would normally expected, was down in the pasterns too. We were advised to feed larger food i.e. not cut up their meat too small make them work for their tucker and also feed them up off the ground. We did this and noticed within a week weight gain and came up in the pasterns. Never heard of it being caused by protein level but I don't profess to know everything, it may well be. Cheers Chris
  16. Yes I agree with what you are saying. not having come across this problem b4 I needed your positive input to help my client have a better understanding of what needs to happen. so she can take the best possible care of her dog with confidence. cheers chris
  17. Thanks as my client is flying blind on this. this may be somewhere to start from a see how the dog goes. cheers Chris
  18. Sometimes it is helpful give a general location of where you are so people may offer some local knowledge. cheers Chris
  19. Can anyone tell me if there is a recomended blood surgar level for a dog with diabetes. Also what would the highs and lows be ? cheers Chris
  20. It's not about charging more for matted dogs its about making money them not me out of breeding cross breeds. Its the dog that gets neglected inbetween litters. Then only gets the care it is long overdue for when money appears on the horizon (puppies). I also suppose I'm fortunate in the fact that there only two other places to go in town. The vets and the finished product that comes from there is a insult. the other is a boarding kennel just out of town that people bring their dogs to me for a bath etc before they take them home. So if they want to go to them no skin off my nose. Chris
  21. I will be barring clients that are breeding crosses for the $$$$$'s. As this is happening all to often I will be barring them. One person only gets the dog clipped and groomed to look good for when puppies ready for sale. The first time I did this dog its coat came off in one piece like shearing a sheep. What's your opinion i'd rather not make the buck in protest what about you ?? Chris
  22. We regularly spray around the yard with phenol mixed five litres of water to one litre of phenol. It can be bought at the supermarket but its probably called Wheelie Bin Cleaner. It also discourages snakes too if your yard is not too inviting. Chris
  23. Why not if you don't mind paying. Huggies babywipes all the time. Mainly because I'm time poor and lazy, okay just lazy. chris
  24. Let me explain if they will drink water with vinegar in it. Of course the best place to put it would be in the water. Whilst I appreciate not many people would drink water with vinegar in it. It Apple Cider Vinegar is very good for humans too. I take it every day not a pleasant brekky drink but way better than pills to control high blood pressure. It has many other uses too. Chris
