  1. It's so nice to see a Labrador or GRT that is of healthy weight. It's almost a rare occurrence. My Kelpies are very athletic, with lots of muscle tone and I always get the "wow they are so skinny!" line....only because they've only ever seen fat kelpies. And yes when I talk about crate training in my puppy classes, I also get looks of concern and comments of "but they are so cruel" (sigh)
  2. Funny you posted this Secretkei as whilst I was out running with my dog earlier this afternoon... in the rain , I was thinking to myself (as I always do if it rains and I'm out running) how absolutely stupid the idea was to go out in the rain. But after a run in the rain, I feel good and my dog always seems to look happy and content....so it's not that stupid after all. But then again, I'm a jogging junkie who's also a dog person, so that makes 2 sicknesses
  3. King/Queen of the Jungle...?? Erny, the reason I posted this was because the look on Gabe's face today when I produced a lovely juicy lamb shank was priceless....not the first time he's got a bone but for some reason today's expression was extraodinary. Classic anthropomorphism but it definitely looked like he was thinking, "WOW mum....look at the size of that bone...you're one hell of a hunter"....probably NOT what he was thinking at all, but I like to think my dog thinks I'm real good
  4. When you give you dog a bone, is he thinking "wow what a good hunter you are!"......Food for thought!
  5. Here's to a massive injection of good luck to all in FNQ.....thinking of you all. Stay safe!
  6. It was 12 months yesterday since you crossed over to rainbow bridge. Still missing you my beautiful boy. Although the immense pain of your loss has subsided, a tear still emerges whenever I speak of you. Love you Buddy. Forever in my heart
  7. Hi Snowball If it's training for general companion dogs and for a good level of everyday control (and beyond) then I would recommend ProK9 who run out of All Breeds Kennels in Lyndhurst. I can't speak for Berwick Obedience but I would definitely check out ProK9 as well......their instructors all hold certifications as well :D
  8. Huski.....you missed one breed that ticks all the boxes...A KELPIE!!
  9. I currently have a shih tzu in for boarding/training that I think is suffering from lack of 'learning to learn'. I have worked with and trained hundreds of different dogs (including a pig) and I can honestly say this little girl is proving quite a challenge in that she seems to forget everything, even within seconds of doing it. She also switches off very quickly and is 'off with the fairies' on a regular basis. Then again, she probably doesn't see the reason why she should sit/stay or drop/stay on wet grass
  10. Why??? This is totally incorrect advice and I echo Erny's sentiments. Tug of war is a team sport, not a challenging for 'dominance'. People lack the knowledge and understanding about drives and tug and then unfortunately go off and give this sort of advice.
  11. Agree Stormie..... :D Apparently he's no longer with his wife....."Woo hoo Cesar "
  12. I say enjoy your pup! You've go the best of 13 odd years to teach her all those wonderful things so why rush! Instead, allow her to offer you behaviours that you then click/treat, rather than you expecting something specific which she may not be in the frame of mind...and old enough...to achieve just yet. This will make the game much more fun for her. Good luck!
  13. Even trainers who aren't technically labelled "positive trainers" often know and use clickers to assist in training . Yep agree Erny
  14. Wish I had a dollar for everytime I heard this one! Kelpies need structured exercise, something with a purpose...even if it's catching a frisbee. But allowing them to run 'free' because you feel they need to run not only absurd, it's dangerous. I live on property too and have 2 working line kelpies. They are contained within an acre of backyard space (fully fenced) most of the time and only go out to the paddocks if there is a reason to. Do your kelpie a favour and get a dog run...at the very least
  15. Well done handsome Cash Man!!! Bill Campbell writes of dog's allelomimetic tendencies....a genuine case of monkey see, monkey do!
  16. One of the 'secrets' to creating workable dynamics within a multi-dog household is to become proficient in micro-managing.
  17. Hey Erny Yes double-sided tape works a treat and as JulesP said...they don't like to put their widdle paws on the tape...horrible sensation Scat mats are good too but can be a little pricey for some however if they can afford it, then the scat mat works best, otherwise it's "Bunnings here we come" ! The "cure" now needs to be aversive, because the act itself has now become very self-rewarding for the dog. Trading games will not work!
  18. It isn't funny to poke fun when someone has a serious issue. To the OP - get a professional in. Sometimes young 'uns attack the oldies because they can sense their decline. Agree megan. Changes in/of environment as well as an ageing dog can create an unsettling amongst a pack. The 'attacks' will continue to occur and will generalise so it is best to get someone with experience in multi-dog households and their problems.
  19. Firstly, thanks Staranais for that information. Secondly, I will agree with Cosmolo here too.
  20. My best friend used to work in animal transport and from what she tells me, there are some countries that Australia will not allow importation from at all and from others, we require a heap of medical procedures, paperwork and quarantine time. Which country?
  21. You know I was thinking the same thing MsJames. I don't think the Council wants to deliberately shut them down....there's more to this than is being told I reckon.
  22. ;) I so know that feeling of elation Kavik...well done to you. I'm sure that was one of the breakthrough's we were discussing earlier!! Congrats..it can only get better from here on.
