  1. Kepala Pet Resort in Diggers Rest. Fantastic staff, faciities and service. The only place I know who takes any dogs who may be old and not feeling to well into their own homes as well as stay with the dogs around the kennels during a thunderstorm overnight
  2. But this does not indicate anything different than it current is at the moment. The animal in question has to be BEYOND the property's boundary, meaning OUTSIDE the boundary. Correct???
  3. If that's the case, they could be one very busy Council.
  4. I just got up off the floor after watching that vid Erny....I suppose that poor dog just needed a good ole stress reliever Oh my....I'm in tears
  5. :) I can see nicky whoop being used by Sheltie owners ....sorry Sheltie owners.. I'll be the No. 1 Ticket Holder ;) "Oi, oi oi"
  6. "Oi" works for me everytime... Another is the BBC (By Bloody Crikey)!. You can add emphasis by saying "Dog" at the end....By BLOODY crikey DOG!! Quality dog training
  7. No, as far as the quadrants of learning it is what is termed Positive Punishment, because you are giving (hence the word Positive which is to add + in the scientific point) a punisher or something unpleasant to your dog. Positive and negative are based on scientific principles of adding and removing....not emotive based of good and bad
  8. I'd love to know where they base this information from. I visited a pack of wolves a couple of years ago in Indiannapolis and let me tell you there was some serious body contact going on....I even have a heap footage of it on DVD to prove it. I keep in contact with the park via Facebook and apparently they had to remove the then alpha male because his sons were fighting for top position...they almost killed him! Oh yeah...these were captive wolves so probably doesn't apply. Dogs are not wolves!
  9. Premack principal, the dog can get to the other dog to play (provided they are socialised), but only if it is on a loose leash. I'd be teaching "you cannot move forwards on a tight lead" without the presence of other dogs, so that the dog got the idea without too much distraction, with additional rewards (food or toy rewards) until the dog got the idea, and then let it see other dogs (perhaps at an offleash park) from a distance, once it has kept a loose leash for a few moments (gradually increasing moments) the behavior would be marked and the dog would be allowed off leash to play. I may or may not suggest a head halter or easy walk harness, depending on the size/strength/determination of the dog etc. ETA: A friend did this with her Great Dane. She'd been told by a few people that such a big, strong dog would need to go on a check chain. All she did was stop moving when he was pulling and within a week he'd stopped pulling altogether and now walks beautifully. 1. How will you do this with a 50kg dog that is hell bent on getting to play with the other dogs 2. What will you do if the dog sees playing with the other dogs as a much higher reward than food treat and/or toys...or the owner itself No pull harnesses are very good but they don't stop the pulling entirely, so you've still got 1 and 2 to tackle Head halters can be extremely aversive to some dogs, so you've still got 1, 2 and now a third issue. The above is what we see each week at school and I get called out to "fix" and I would love to learn how it would be done without any corrective approaches in a timely manner. Excellent that your friend was able to find success with her GD :D Nothing worse than a dog that is the size of a small horse pulling you all over the place. However this is but one story where that technique has worked. The stop when pulling method (without a correction) can take an age to achieve. What do you say to the family who are time poor and under-skilled who just want the problem fixed tomorrow?
  10. Why are you asking Wayrod, you've done the NDTF course, so you should know the answer to that
  11. Agree :D...Poodlefan hits the nail on the head and speaks like a true professional. Everything I was thinking, just written much more eloquently than I could ever put it.
  12. So Gilypoo, have you contacted a behaviourst yet?
  13. Tasha, our entire female Kelpie, is always more loving/cuddly and really smoochy just before, during and for a little while after her season. She then reverts back to Frankenstein's Bride until the next time
  14. Hey Erny, great to hear that Mandela is eating!! Matters not if you have to heat it, but you already know that. Here's praying that it's permanent appetite.
  15. I should be in Melbourne......in March 2011 for a week attending seminars and training days(work related) I must admit I have been very slack with training recently. I do have a new resident four legged friend for a few weeks until he gets assigned to a handler, I shall complete a 10 minute training session sometime in the next few days so he can complete several tasks such as: the washing / ironing - cooking - cleaning - car servicing..... are you still struggling with training your dog to complete the ironing? ;) :D
  16. I agree with what Cosmolo said a few posts ago...it's got nothing to do with the trainers that have come out of the Delta course, but more so the Delta organisation itself who seem to dictate to their students which seminars they should and shouldn't be attending, which method they should or shouldn't be using, which books to read and which to not. I am led to believe they did the same when Brenda Aloff came to Australia. I was told of a Delta trainer who stated she would rather have a dog PTS rather than administer a correction for inappropriate behaviour...seriously. It is this sort of stuff that taints reputations. Delta sounds more like a Cult nowadays...sorry but this is image they are portraying. Oh and I also use positive, motivational based, luring, shaping and capturing methods (with and without a clicker) 99.99% percent of the time and I'm an NDTF trained trainer.
  17. Not too sure I agree. If this were the case then nearly all of the litter would show either dominant or submissive tendencies, dependant on how the mum was feeling during pregnancy. I'd need more proof of this for it to ring true. Agreed.
  18. Isn't that what McConnell is trying to do in her blog? I think the whole blog is worth reading before jumping to conclusions to what it is about. She has not said that it is not applicable to dogs, read it for yourself and see. Kelpie, I think your Delta trainer needs to get herself a cat Jeanne, yes she most probably is and hopefully all of the other "kill the word dominance' army might sit up and listen. After all, if Trish McConnell writes it, it must be right...right??? 'My' Delta Trainer is actually a well known spokesperson for the group
  19. I'm with Staranais, I think the word dominance needs to be reclaimed and put straight once and for all. I hear it being used by many people, even veterinarians, both in the correct and incorrect manner, therefore rather than try to erase it from our vocabulary, why not clearly explain what dominance is and isn't. I've heard of one Delta trainer who no longer likes the use of the word Leadership because it implies status....WTF!!?? What next?
  20. When my youngest Kelpie was a pup he was on Advance and he had the worst coat, suffered copraphagia and stunk horribly. After I switched him over to EP, the change in his overall health and coat was amazing. EP has been excellent for my dogs so it gets my vote!
  21. Erny, you know me too well... I was most certainly NOT referring to Barry Haywood in my post but was just making a general statement that you don't have to have credentials to be good. I don't think I even mentioned his name ;) Actually I was thinking of George Schofield when I wrote my post. George is a genius at canine chiro and does not hold credentials. Funny how the written word can be dangerously misconstrued....World Wars can happen that way LOL!
  22. My GSD who's now gone to Rainbow Bridge would suffer from fly bites on his ears. Not every year though which was odd. I used Rid repellant cream each morning and re-apply in the afternoon which helped keep the nasty buggers away from him. Worked a treat! Very interesting Janba...I wish I'd know about that one earlier!
  23. Apologies Erny, didn't mean it to be offensive ..was just being silly . I can only imagine what you must be going through dealing with Mandela's condition. I suppose I am very lucky that none of my dogs has suffered with it so far.
  24. I own working Kelpies...so none of the above Let me take that back in case I curse myself Will be interested in the outcome though!
