Ear Yeast Infection From Food?
_PL_ replied to BullBreedBoy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As a rather extreme example of food related chronic ear infection is Silver By the time he arrived had a full farmyard of fungus and bacteria. Definitely triggered by food. As was the scratching at his mouth and chewing paws, took a while of fine tuning but basically he can have zero chicken or turkey, even if it's the smallest amount of chicken meal found in a lot of dry food. Silver was adopted and to this day, he will still flare up with red ears if someone unknowingly slips him the wrong sort of treat. Other than that, his ears are great and his skin is perfect. :) Inserting gross photo from arrival. Obviously he needed several meds to pull him out of it but until the change of diet it would have only been half a fix, otherwise I think he would have just been 'one of those dogs' constantly at the vet for ear infections. I highly recommend anyone with an ear infection dog to consider exclusion diet in conjunction with meds. -
Buying New Puppy But Keeping Registration In Breeders Name

I agree here Same. :) -
I agree, people cross the road when this big black gumnut comes walking down the street. Little do they know... Such a scary dog.

Except if they look like a teddybear they aren't exactly going to put people off

Yes you've chosen breeds that are sometimes considered 'too much dog' for someone wanting an easier pet. If you feel unsafe, I'd also consider a dog that looks the part (as far as society defines it) but isn't necessarily going to act like a handful manstopper. And if you weren't allergic I'd suggest a sound, well bred Rottweiler raised with kids. I've heard Ridgeback are great but don't know enough about them.(?) I find just the looks to be more important for putting off strangers, and the temperament to be utmost important as a family pet. You need a 2 in 1. :) Hope you get some good suggestions.

Firstly, my deepest sympathy. You've gone through a shocker, getting puppies should be a happy and exciting time. Please take the leap with the F10. It's a fantastic product and won't bleach or stain surfaces either. It's probably the parvicide with the least amount of irritation to the skin and respiratory tract. I've sprayed it all over my car interior and dipped my shoes in it after visiting high risk pounds. Cleaned surfaces, grooming equipment, crates and dog items like collars. It works. Like most things, you aren't using it daily and exposed to it at work, it's not going to be a risk. The pup.... I'm so sorry, but I can't see where the pup was ever tested and confirmed to have lepto. Some states list it as a notifiable disease, it's that dangerous. You'd think the breeder would at least have it tested for his own sake. There's also dozens of viruses, bacteria, immune and parasitic (like giardia) that can kill or make a pup critically ill very very fast. Normally pups are tested then treated aggressively with whatever protocol is needed to save them. The whole thing sounds like a filthy dirty backyard breeder doing it all on the cheap and now watching his puppy money go down the drain.

Pet Industry Peak Body In Turmoil After Consumers Misled
_PL_ replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
Awful. Probably involved a little detective work as well, the Uralla farm was busted this year. It's disgusting. EDIT (Northern Tablelands): Owner, Uralla; Ms Press, related story Owner, Wandsworth; Ms Frazer related story (image warning) -

Companion Animal Act Vs. Council Bylaws
_PL_ replied to Dogs Are Forever's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks dogslife. :) My inbox got a rather panicky email from dogsNSW referring to the draft management plan. How do councils generally fare in getting these things instated? http://dogsnsw.org.au/images/stories/PDFS/DraftKeepingOfAnimalsLocalOrdersPolicy_April2015.pdf -
Green with envy! She just needs to learn to mow it now! Can I expect to see you posting in the training section? LOL

Green with envy! OMG I love dog clothes especially the knitted jumpers. I wonder if you can get knitted pyjamas? :) Hurtta Comfort Knit They don't make the Comfort Knit in greyhound sizes and to be honest, I'd be reluctant to buy Hurrta again for sighthounds. Shitty Whippet has a Hurtta winter coat and despite being the right size, the fit is awful- it looks pouchy and odd. But she's also got a tiny waist so I figured I'd get one of the cooling coats for the Idiot Dog, who is a fair bit stouter and has a relatively short back for a boy. And.. that was a fail, too. Some generic shaped stuff works for sighthounds but Hurtta doesn't, which is a shame because the waterproof overalls would come in very handy around here. Oh that's a bugger, because those knits are really cute! If I had a smooth coated dog I'd be very very tempted. Blast! They look perfect!!!! If they had them locally to try on that would be awesome but I can only find overseas sellers of the knitwear and it would be impossible to send it back.

Companion Animal Act Vs. Council Bylaws
_PL_ replied to Dogs Are Forever's topic in General Dog Discussion
The Penrith Council changes? Local Govt tries, and can bring changes in but you can fight it if the State Govt has already set legislation. Such as the CAA having no limit on dog numbers. That's my understanding. -
Seconded! Pity it has to be said.

Raw Feeders - Inconsistent Stools
_PL_ replied to frankiethestaffie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Was wondering that myself. But am no expert. 100% meat, skin & bone would never ever work here. We make 25% raw pulped fruit and veg w/chia, coconut oil and VAN health booster. And the rest ground bone & meat. Feeding chunks like on a "Bone Day" we cut off spare fatty skin or any fat globs hanging off carcasses or necks... leave out wings and lamb flaps and always leave out bones with access to fatty white marrow. Fat has to be closely watched here, particularly with the oldies who looove their raw bones. edit: the way I see it is yes; some dogs have zero problems eating a set diet, for example the Prey Model. Or grain free diets etc. In the end though, you have to feed what your dog does best on no matter what your pre-determined plan is. His tummy seems to be trying to tell you something. So in your case it might pay to adventure a little into the BARF diet or even add a little quality dry food back in if he was doing better digestively while eating it. -
Same!!  I just can't help it.

I'm interested in the diagnosis as well. I'm assuming by 'brain damaged' you mean neurological problems rather than just a little spethal?? If he has exhibits; tremors, shakey or wobbly head, ataxia, suspected blindness, inability to stay upright, unable to walk in a straight line to a target, failure to hit milestones, dragging/knuckling over in the rear toes.... you need a professional diagnosis because at 14 weeks you're getting into the age where if something is going to get worse then it will really start to happen. My 'spethal' boy took 2 years to learn how to sit. If that's your problem it's just repeat and reward until it sticks. 14 weeks is still so young and if he grows up a little slow then you simply adjust your expectations and love them the way they are.

Tracheal / Throat Collapse - Vet Recommendations
_PL_ replied to FURRYFRIENDS's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
:) Popped in looking for an update too WM. -
I agree that it's probably google wisdom. :) I always wonder what the hairless crestie crosses on gumtree will end up looking like. Although there is only one breeder, the dog could have been imported as a pet by someone not necessarily born here. Did the breeder identify it as an Orchid Dog?

Hahaha! Good find. And don't you love the tiny one running with 5 large?
