  1. See i cant see a problem with this either! I was given this excuse when i questioned why the foster group i currently have a a litter of pups for, were charging $800 for an 8 week old puppy! $700 for me, i get a discount of $100 for being a foster carer to them! No i didnt intend to keep any of the pups, i did it because they were desperate for a foster carer with experience in whelping bitches. But why is it a problem that people use foster caring as a way of finding a nice dog for themselves, if in the mean time they are helping out by fostering. I know there are not an abundance of homes around compared to dogs, i know there are thousands of dogs still needing homes, so whats the problem? If the dog fits the home then why not?
  2. Yes this is fair enough, there is no way Iggys should be running with Greys and large dogs.
  3. Yes i agree! Surely there are not that many great foster carers around that they just become disposable?!
  4. I dont understand this?! If rescue groups deem people fit enough and capable enough to foster their dogs for them, care for them, socialise them etc then why are the foster carers not allowed to foster the dogs they have cared for, if they fall in love with them? I understand if the home is not appropriate for the dog (We have a beautiful Cavalier mum here who we would have loved to have kept but she hates my cats and she isnt fond of my children either, so it wouldnt be fair on her to keep her here). I have 4 failed foster cats (from hundreds of hand reared kittens) and most likely a failed foster puppy shortly. But i would be horrified if rescue groups then told me i wasnt allowed to foster anymore. We are moving to 5 acres shortly and i plan on fostering long term after setting up the right fascilities for them. As far as im concerned, my priority is the dog, helping socialise it, training it, assessing its temperament to report back to the behaviourists and generally helping it to become a great adoption prospect. I see this as doing the foster group a favour! If they dont want my free, hard working, time consuming services anymore then too bad for them and their loss!! Just seems crazy to me!
  5. Personally I would steer clear of any "Whippet x Kelpie" types, none of those Pet Rescue links, apart from the little fawn and white girl, look anything like Whippets to me. I dare say they probably have the behaviour and temperaments of Kelpies rather than Whippets too! There are always adult and rescue Whippets around. Try here Whippet Club NSW Otherwise look on the breed pages here on DOL, there are also adults that need rehoming. Adult Whippets for rehoming Having said that, im not sure a boisterous big Lab and Sibe would be a good combination either, it would depend a lot on the Whippet that you get. Good luck :)
  6. I haven't had any chewing but my god this Cavalier girl will sneak off and turd on my good rug every second she gets, despite having access to the outside and having floor boards every where else in the house - the rug is the best place to have a dump!
  7. Ultrasound confirmed at least 4 Whippet bubbas here! Due around the 17th May from the first mating.
  8. Awww I love the oldies. My first dog was a 10 year old border collie rescue, she was the best dog and lived till she was 17 years. She had multiple health problems and took loads of meds but she loved her retirement years! I will always have the token geriatric rescue here!
  9. Could I have peoples thoughts and experiences on this please. What age is it done? It would be for Whippet puppys. I've never liked the idea of it before but there are more and more BYBs of whippets popping up in WA and I don't want to be partly responsible. Desexing contracts are not worth the paper they're written on. Do the pups recover well? What sort of cost is involved? I'm guessing there is significant risks? Thanks :-)
  10. I have a word document with potential future dog/puppy names. I quite like the unusual names. I have Spirit, Lyric, Mystic, Luna and Baden, Olten, Falco, Balderik and Salome! Just to name a few. The first few are designated to Whippets, the last ones are Swiss names dedicated to my future WSSD!
  11. I want a whippet called Bitzer Maloney all skinny and boney and a Dachshund called Schnitzel Von Krum with a very low tum! ...... My daughter loves Hairy Mclary books! :-p Oh and we have just named our new born rescue Cavalier puppys - Polly and Sukey (Polly put the kettle on, Sukey take it off again!) and Reuben and Morris (thanks to some DOLers!).
  12. I have never managed to pick up a drop in temp on my bitches and gave up doing it long ago. I found other sings much more accurate. Not to mention I dont particularly like sticking a thermometre up a poor preggy girls backside more than twice a day for weeks on end and the girls certainly didnt enjoy it either!
  13. Oh I love him! I dont know how you guys do this all the time, i would want to keep them all! Good job we are moving to 5 acres!!
  14. Hi fellow Westralians! I haven't been in here for ages. I am wondering if anyone has an old whelping box they wouldnt mind lending or donating for a rescue bitch about to whelp? It needs to be about 70cm x 70cm or just a bit bigger. Or can anyone direct me to where is the best place to ask? I have a foster Cavvy here who was rescued from a puppy farm along with 40 others and is ready to whelp. I have whelping boxes but they're far to big. Cheers :-)
  15. Yes some of the rescues here leave a lot to be desired in terms of their communications and PR! My mum had the same issue with SAFE. They keep bumping her on petrescue so either she is still available, or they are bumping it for exposure? I don't mind being persistent after all they must be very busy, but I work in sales full time and even on my busiest days can squeeze in a quick 1 minute call at least to let someone know I will be back to them ASAP. Kajtek very cute puppy! Lots of awwwwwing from me :D I wouldn't mind a puppy but trying to pick up something that might not be so easy to find a foster home for; ie older dogs/needing large spaces to keep. We are priveleged to have acreage so it's nice to use it to give something back.
  16. Yes i've often seen exhibitors running from one group ring to the other and back, practically dying of exhaustion in the process! I think i'd have to stick with one breed per show!
  17. Haha! Makes paperwork tricky! ;) :noidea:30th of April to me. Where do you want to go ?? You can sneak me in April and we will see what happens :) Maybe I will have some born in April and some in May - hehehehe
  18. No stay in here with me Oso! Hopefully we will be having Whippy bubbas too. Due 17th May from first mating. This is a special litter for me because my girl has been living with friends in QLD (they have also been campaigning her, notching up multi BIGs and a BIS win!) since we lost much of our property to bush fire last year. I miss her terribly and I am so looking forward to having one of her babies come join our family. While she was in the east, she flew to a handsome boy in Vic, so I can't wait! :noidea:30th of April to me. Where do you want to go ?? You can sneak me in April and we will see what happens :)
  19. Thanks everyone for your replies. I think I would be the same, possibly own 3 different breeds but concentrate on maybe showing only two. It's interesting to hear peoples views, thanks :-)
  20. I have heard a few breeders comment that having multiple breeds of dogs to exhibit and breed is not good and someone even likened it to puppy farming. The view was that if you have multiple breeds, then how can you possibly get to know the breed properly in terms of blood lines, types etc and show them effectively as well as breed responsibly. Thoughts? I have always had Whippets and I think I know the lines, dogs, other breeders and types well and I have researched them for years. But there are at least 3 other breeds I would like to own one day and I'm currently researching another breed.
  21. Toy - Affenpinscer (sp?) :D Small - Whippet Medium - Kelpie Large - White Swiss Shepherd Giant - Great Dane We are building on 5 acres ... is it a bad thing that I want all of them all at once?!
  22. I had a foster puppy like this once, almost exactly the same. Everyone said staffy cross .... turned into a Greyhound!!!
