  1. Aussie, the outside world is full of distractions and exciting things for your pup, hence her reluctance to come to you. I would initially put her outside and for a little while ask nothing of her, while she lets off steam or go's exploring.Worse thing you can do is to set yourself and the pup up to fail. Is the pup motivated by food or an object? For example if she has a healthy drive,I would walk out in the yard but not call her.I would wave the prey object around. This gets her attention. Then I would move away or back still waving the object. This way she is attracted to you and she takes action to come to you.Once she is coming to you, then call her. This makes you attractive to her and reinforces recall. Once you know beyond any doubt that she understands what is being asked of her,you can reinforce recall by some work on a longline. The other thing playing a part here is the pup's developing drive and confidence. When pups are very young, they tend to stick very close to the owner, but as they get older and more confident they will venture further afield and thus encounter more distractions. 2. Mutchumbo,I second Kynan's suggestion.Steve's courses are a wealth of great information. Tony
  3. The routine with the treat on the floor is teaching the dog to pull. Tony
  4. If the quote is correct, then the person is barking up the wrong tree. Tony
  5. Erny is spot on, as whatever gets the job done, gets the job done. Tony
  6. KK,I agree totally with Erny and Cosmolo that there are many many variables involved. Many of the variables will be obvious but there are also factors that your friend and you may have not picked up on. I would be very very inclined to consult a good trainer. Tony
  7. Cal, with Fetch I will throw the ball say four times. On the first three, when the dog brings the ball back to me I will say"Out" and take the ball off the dog.I will then throw it again. This time being the fourth time in this example, when the dog brings the ball back to me,I will verbally praise him but not ask for the ball. The dog will stand or lay down and chew on the ball. The Dog is being allowed a Capture thus staisfying drive. After a few minutes I will then take the ball back. With the Hose, the dog is trying to catch the moving stream of course. To satisfy drive in this case I would after a period of chasing the water stop waving the hose around, thus the dog now has a stationery stream of water she can bite or snap at.Leave the Stream still for a little while and that should do the trick. Tug.I would follow the same principle as the ball.Wave the tug around and pull against her for a little while, then ask for release of the tug.Say after three of these short sessions, let her take the tug.She will either chew it or walk off with it.You can then walk off with the dog, letting her carry the Tug and then take it back and put it away. The above is only an example and individual dogs of course will have different levels of drive which need to be taken into account. Are you asking her to perform any task inbetween these reward's? An extremely good source of knowledge regarding this topic and many other's is Steve from K9Force's courses on drive training. Tony
  8. I never get too carried away correcting pups.Pups are young, eager and inquisitive.Too much correction will lead to resistance.I prefer distraction with Pups rather than correction. If one has to use correction, its wise to use disassociation. Tony
  9. I agree 100% with Peresphone.Aimee, also a dog cannot pull if you give it nothing to pull against. Tony
  10. The other dog's show good sense in trying to remove the Headcollar.Yes I have seen this type of behaviour in Dogs,Horse's,Cattle and so on.Its simply the other Dog's noticing it and to them it is new, strange and out of place. Tony
  11. Luke, there is a huge difference between waving a light around and using a tug.To satisfy drive the dog need's a capture. The dog cannot capture a light, so there is the dog with drive switched on but no way to satisfy the drive.A Tug will initiate drive but then also gives the dog something physical on which they can make a capture, thus satisfying and releasing drive. Tony
  12. Folks lets not start to waffle on about outside and inside dogs.Leema has asked for advice not some judgement that is way off the real issue. Leema, what other behaviour do's this Dog exibit?Sounds awfully like separation anxiety to me.Can you get a knowledgeable trainer to asess the situation. Tony
  13. Erny maybe he stutters?I must say I had a Horse named Mandela.Good name for your pup I think, as it like the man it has connotations of class, determination, deceny and inspiration. Tony
  14. firstly time and time again, people seem to overlook, forget or not even realise Dogs are predators.Cats to many Dogs are prey, that is the way of nature and a dogs instinct.Too many People seem to overlook that we must manage a dog's natural instinct and give him or her a safe outlet. Also from your post,it seem's the cat entered the dog's territory. The question I have about the small dog is, did it come under the fence into the two dog's territory? How can you get your friend to be stronger, you ask?The answer to that lies well away from the dog's.Your friend need's to deal with the stress and issues of her personal life and then she may be able to operate in a much clearer and stronger manner within herself. This along with your friend having a look at her leadership, will benefit the dog's. I would really strongly suggest, that your friend has a knowledgeable trainer look at the situation. When people are stressed, their objectivity of any situation can be very low. Tony
  15. Denis or poodle old Chap, you seem to be going down the same old track!!!!I guess a Poodle cannot change its spots{Sorry I meant Leopard} The problem I have is when somebody really is genuine and doe's know what they are talking about, they do not have to leave it 24hrs to reply.Genuine aquired true knowledge just flows. You have tried the old I am an Electrical genius before,so perhaps we could be spared the same routine this time around. Tony
  16. Well done Erny and Lisa!!!! Tony
  17. Gemibabe, interesting that you waited till nearly 2 in the morning to post. Firstly here in this Country, everybody has the freedom of speech and expression.I would defend anybody's right to express themselves. In my eye's some responsibility come's with freedom of speech.I see that responsibility as being to tell the truth and if unsure of one's statement's or views on something, then check with reputable source's, before running with it. The Net is many things such as entertainment and information. The information availible on the net ranges from correct, partially correct, irrational information, mistruth and downright lies. One cannot just take something on the Net to be automatically correct or gospel. That would indeed be foolish!!!! You have used the tired old saying that people are engaging the gang mentality.I am afraid that is a very empty and rather poor comeback and has no constuctive element to it. Because People will defend against mistruths, distortions and lies, do's not equate to them being in Gang mentality. Please read again my earlier post about the logic you are using. Watching one video, do's not give one the hands on experience and true knowledge on which to constructively pass a judgement. Tony
  18. Quote from Pax. just wish that everyone could experience all methods of training with an experienced trainer of that particular feild and an open mind before they flame other methods. Exactly Pax!!!!That is all we are asking people to do!!! Tony
  19. Erny and Kelpie-I, I have to join the two of you inregard to the statement in question. Tony
  20. I must second MS James comments regarding Erny.Flip you have done yourself no favors by insulting Erny.Insults destroy any credibility your post had,if it had any in the first place!!!! Erny, has helped many a Dog and many an owner!!!She recieve's nothing for the advice she give's to people on this site and the advice is given out of her good nature. Tony
  21. Flip,I am going to have to tell it as it is.Your post especially the first line is one of ignorance and assumption. I really wonder about some who have posted anti E-Collar sentiments. To those people I ask these questions.Have you ever used such a collar?Have you ever been around tough, hard, rank dogs or just the pan licker that lies around the Kitchen? Tony
  22. Gemibabe, how would you respond if I said all your friends are total fools!!!!You would be highly likely to feel angry,annoyed,pi--ed off, cranky and other emotions. Why would you feel like the above after reading my statement about your friends? You would be annoyed because I made a statement about your friend's based on no real knowledge of your friends at all!!!!I made a judgement without knowing any facts or information about your friends. Now using the above example, why use the same flawed logic that I used in my example and rubbish a training tool without hands on use and hands on experience. Also just because something appears on the net,do's not automatically make it gospel.A Video can also be doctored or manipulated to appear a certain way to support some dubious agenda's that belong to some rather dubious groups. Tony
  23. I have to agree totally with Pax and Dogdude. We must be the pathway or key to the dog gaining acess to activities of high value and drive satisfaction. Tony
