  1. I don't object to focus being put on health issues. I do object to pedigree breeders getting the blame for the health issues of dogs bred by BYB and puppyfarms.
  2. I have seen it several times and heard of more. There was a whole breed non awarded at Sydney Royal just gone. Happens more then you think. Really? Which one?
  3. Do you know which one? I assume they would be in next month's issue.
  4. That is part of it for sure. We have other shows with international judges as well though which while often a bit more of an unknown entity if the judge hasn't judged here before (many have), the Royals are a bit different for some reason - or stand out more I guess. Another factor I think is that they pull a slightly different entry demographic as you get more from different states or areas than you may normally. Some dogs and people also handle the venue differently I feel as the show puts a whole lot of different pressures on both dogs and people when compared to 'normal' shows. I was at the Royal for a day and my observation of the two judges I saw working was that they were thoughtful and considerate in their judging. I don't know if they do critiques but it would be interesting to see what's said about the various dogs - not just these two.
  5. You might have just been there at the wrong time to say hello to the other dog/owner. The Royal is such a long day and very very noisy in the pavilion all day. Dogs/owners do need to take breaks. I was there on the first Saturday with my dogs. We took turns and rotated the dogs around so that the dogs and owners could have some down time but there was usually at least one of our breed up front for the public to meet. If someone wanted to say hello to one of the dogs taking a break, it would have been 'no, sorry, not right now'. Some may think it rude, but it is what is best for the dog. Also for me! After answering question after question for hours on end (Pyrenean mountain dog, about 60 kilos, from the Pyrenees mountains in France, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, no they only eat about as much as a border collie, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, 60 kilos, not they only come in white, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, no they don't eat that much for their size, 60 kilos ..... yes we do that all day and at about that rate of reply too ROFL!) there were times I needed to sit in my chair and close my eyes and ignore people for a while (can't leave because we have to look after the dogs ..). The show is sensory overload and when you are up from before 4 in the morning, at some point you need to take a break. As for the goings on, I can't comment as I wasn't there when it happened. Whatever happened it is very unfortunate all round, but perhaps best highlights two things - always be a gracious loser and save the venting for the car ride home, and always remember that you are the public face of all purebred dogs and dog sports and you never know who is listening, or what they may hear/how they will hear it (which may or may not be what was meant when it was said). And you are right on the judging. The Royals are always a bit of a wild card when it comes to who wins and who doesn't. Perhaps because of the international judges.

  7. There's something very wrong in that story and it's not the story.
  8. It isn't backlash. its downright abusive and what surprises me is the amount of people who claim to love dogs being so utterly vicious. Perhaps you haven't visited the Crufts page.
  9. The peke was fine. He wasn't hyperventilating at all.
  10. I haven't seen it but various people have mentioned a photo going around of the owner just sobbing, hugging her dog. On the day her dog won BOB at the biggest dog show in the world. I've read quite awful posts about how the owner should be charged with abuse. I wouldn't be surprised if she's received threats.
  11. The ferals are out in force. Not just the AR whackadoodles but show people wanting to kick someone while they're down just because they can. The posts on the Crufts site are just awful.
  12. Maybe everyone they contacted in their local area is full as rescues often are.
  13. Thank you Snook! <3 Dave-O we (Team Dog) are a young charity but we have achieved a lot in our short time. Last year we kept 98 pets out of the pounds in NSW and with the families who love then, as well as providing extensive advice and support to pet owners subject to breed specific legislation and other council action. We ran two free microchipping events, and helped with low cost desexing surgery for many clients, too. We support positive and reasonable animal management and we work alongside many pounds and shelters in achieving our goals, and do a lot of advocacy work too. Funds are extremely important to what we do, and given the uniqueness of our programs we had overwhelming demand for our help in 2015. We have had to temporarily shut down financial assistance while we lay the foundations for sustainability long in to the future. Regular donations are a huge part of that and we are very appreciative of any donations people may choose to make. No pressure of course, there's so many wonderful charities around that deserve support. You can find out more about us here: Www.teamdog.com.au Www.facebook.com/theteamdog You should note that you only help people in NSW. She did say NSW. I'm in SA but still support Team Dog because I'd love to see what they do either expand to other states or be adopted by people/groups in other states. Only help not located. There's a difference. And by helping Team Dog you are not in any way assisting the formation of a similar group anywhere else.
  14. I don't think people deliberately breed litters where they go, 'Hey, I wonder how many of this litter will end up locked in a box for two years.'

  16. The PETA one is a crack up. Emotional rant. Desex everything. No more breeding. Yep and no more dogs at all is the result. At least other animal rights groups took the care to use facts in their submissions. Maybe - there were some that were kept secret and they were interviewed in camera. In other words they could say what they wanted. Why?
  17. Laws like this are not designed to be enforceable.
  18. As it's my thread, and I went off topic to respond to the post about the taxi industry, I'm happy to debate the sharing economy in off topic with anyone who wants to join in. To respond to Rebanne, no, I would not be happy with a breeder Ubering around puppies. I note Uber did not respond to a query on puppy age nor level of vaccination.
  19. I agree, no one loses! Of course they do! As a taxi operator my business is being eroded by the deregulation of the taxi industry. Uber doesn't even pay tax in this country and they are using drivers who are working for remuneration below the minimum wage. It is not a level playing field and shame on the ACT Government for being the first to capitulate.... You would have thought a Labor government would look after the workers. Do you realise that Uber/ Google is pushing the implementation of the driverless car? That will mean there will be no jobs at all in the point to point transport industry... We will all be fu@*ed Jesus this makes me so mad, I bet Uber didn't donate their 25% commission to rescue. It's insidious the way they are using rescue ETA not having a go at you Steph, but people don't realise that livelihoods and investments are at stake. We work damn hard 365 days a year and our plate is was our superannuation. Uber is a business just like the taxi industry, which up until Uber's arrival was a monopoly. Like most industries disrupted by digital, it will have to change to survive.
  20. Doesn't seem to be the same situation.
  21. Because this won't encourage impulse buying and a pet shop mindset at all. ---- http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/canberra-life/uber-delivering-puppies-to-workplaces-in-canberra-today-20160224-gn30ou.html Uber delivering puppies to workplaces in Canberra today Jil Hogan February 25 2016 - 10:23AM Uber will be delivering puppies to workplaces around Canberra between 12pm - 4pm on Thursday February 25. And you thought it was just going to just be a regular Thursday Uber is today delivering puppies to workplaces in Canberra for 15 minutes of puppy love. Between 12pm – 4pm, anyone with the Uber app can order the puppies to be delivered to their workplace for a $40 fee, which will go towards supporting local animal shelter Best Friends Pet Rescue. Only workplaces in the Canberra CBD can get the puppies delivered, and Uber suggests you should also ask your boss and check there are no people in the office who are allergic. The deliveries are happening in eight cities around the country, with the goal of encouraging pet adoptions and raising funds for local shelters. If you fall in love with the bundle of fluff who visits you, all puppies are also available for adoption. The puppies will be chaperoned with a representative from the shelter and Uber. To request your puppy delivery, open the Uber app between 12pm and 4pm and select the "Puppies" option.
  22. Is there show training in your area? I've found this an enormous help for socialising my two.
  23. I'd keep dogs in the trolley if that's the case
