  1. I use the K9 bridle for Roo. It's quite good in stopping the majority of pulling.
  2. The space thing should not be an issue. There are plenty of dogs in Europe and the US, as two examples, that live in apartments and they're not all small dogs. It's the quality of life not the quantity of space.
  3. I'm sure Fox terrier -can translate into "anything that is yours is now mine." It's 'Oh, I thought it was a fox. No, no, I'm pretty sure it's a fox.'
  4. My first kerry blue used to get up and walk out of the lounge room if my Mum left the telly on in the morning and Humphrey B Bear came on.
  5. I am very surprised that any DOLer would say leave him alone. It's illegal and the owners, because he is actually owned, should be fined for every day he's been at large. Everyone else would be.
  6. Why doesn't the home that bought* him from DAS do something about him? They're legally responsible for him, aren't they? * changed to bought which is more accurate than adopted.
  7. If your dog is a wheaten terrier then stealing is genetic. It's not whether or not they'll be a thief but what type. Roo specialises in bedding. My previous wheaten liked socks and my first preferred underwear.
  8. I want to build a sandpit for my puppies. I have an 8 metre long disused garden bed that I'm going to put a couple of clamshell pools in filled with water. In the middle I want to have a sandpit for digging. Not sure what type of sand to use. I've seen coloured sand at Bunnings that claims to be non-toxic but non-toxic for people isn't necessarily non-toxic for dogs. I've not seen beach sand for sale anywhere.
  9. Soft coated wheaten terrier In Ireland, the Irish soft coated wheaten terrier. The story goes that the wheaten breeders simply wanted 'Irish wheaten terrier' but at the time the main colour of the Irish terrier was red wheaten so they objected, saying people would get confused. Another story, probably apocryphal, is that when establishing the foundation wheatens the IKC lined up 15 dog and went along the line saying, 'That one's a wheaten, that one's an Irish, that one's a wheaten, that one's an Irish.' The IKC picked soft coated wheaten terrier simply because of the coat, despite there being only one type of coat in the breed. Ironically, the red wheaten in Irish terriers went out of fashion and a rusty red is now the main colour. Kerry Blue Terrier Blue because of the colour but the location origins are disputed. Most say County Kerry but Tipperary is also a contender apparently (though this child of Kerry sneers at County 'it's a long way to'). Irish Terrier A terrier from Ireland. Obviously. Glen of Imaal terrier From the Glen of Imaal (immawl) in the Wicklow mountains in Ireland. Kerry Beagle A breed from County Kerry. The mystery around this breed (which is only recognised by the IKC) is why it's called a beagle. It is a hound.
  10. Maybe - but then maybe the family also wants or needs privacy? Maybe but it makes the whole task rather more difficult.
  11. I think it's peculiar the sitter's name hasn't been released. Surely that could help in trying to track down the owners.
  12. Every breeder, no matter what the breed, breeds pets. They'll say they don't but they do. The vast majority of dogs are pets. They might be show dogs but they're pets first and foremost.
  13. I think this is the best solution. Block off access, yes, but eventually you need to desensitise. When next door got a new puppy, Bunny barked and barked and barked hysterically and was way overstimulated. I went around to see all the neighbours to apologise, explained what the issue was and what I was doing about it. I have several neighbours who do night shift so they appreciated me going around. Yes, eventually she got used to the new noise and ignores him now even though he's found his voice and is now barking himself.
  14. A couple of things: Firstly, if the owner suffered a stroke perhaps he couldn't put them away. Secondly, the neighbour says one of them killed his dog yet nothing happened? The report should have said the neighbour claimed one of them killed his dog.
  15. My view is why does anyone care if I want to anthropomorphise my dogs? If I think my dog looks guilty then it's no one's business but mine. The academics can pull their heads in, particularly as down the track they're likely to change their minds, as academics have a wont to do.
  16. Haven't posted for a while. The two terrors are keeping me busy. Bunny has decided that she doesn't want her beard groomed. She gets quite narky and I don't want it to get worse. Roo, on the other hand, doesn't want to be groomed at all. Also, he's become a teenager. He's wee-ed inside a number of times. Dominance weeing, I'd say. And the dear little man has no sense of personal space at all.
  17. I don't believe the line staff have ever really been a problem at LDH. LDH's problem has always been the management team. Are those of you saying that medicating these dogs for months on end is okay actually suggesting that it's better than working with rescue groups to get them out of the pound environment and into foster homes? Other pounds do it. What is so hard about it for the superpound?
  18. Whistleblower alleges widespread drugging of dogs http://m.theage.com.au/victoria/lost-dogs-home-whistleblower-alleges-widespread-drugging-of-dogs-20151125-gl8c69.html So, instead of killing the dogs after eight days, dogs are being kennelled for months and being drugged. After a while it will be 'See, we tried; better off dead' and back to killing.
  19. Perhaps it will close him down.
  20. I was at Bunnings today. Nary a dog in sight. Nor indeed, children. Perhaps the dogs vs kids argument is keeping both away. ;)
  21. Love the name :) Do you find it easy to manage? New noises get a lot of barking. If they repeat she gets used to them. We've had a lot of planes flying over today which she started barking at then ignored. There's an app called Pup School, which has noises recorded. I used it when she was little. There's also a record function.
  22. My Bunny is quite noise sensitive. I've assumed this was from the plane.
