  1. Why can't you be in QLD K9? I'd love to do something like this!!! Sounds like it was fantastic
  2. MrsD: their sign does say they train Sunday mornings as well as Friday nights. Friday nights just work better for me, but I also just noticed that Val Bonney's runs advanced classes at Durack on a Tuesday night so that would be pretty good for me!
  3. thanks guys, I was interested in the oxley one because its the closest to me. I'll probably head over to southside in the next few weeks for a look.
  4. I phoned earlier and left a message. Oh well, might check out another club next week then.
  5. Well, I went tonight only to find the grounds completely deserted and not a person or dog in sight. The sign says training fridays 7:30pm - 8:30pm. Have they moved or changed training times/days? Can someone please let me know any details about this club!? Thanks
  6. I was hoping to come along and suss out the Dog Obedience Club of Brisbane tonight but wasn't sure what time the classes start. If someone could let me know that would be awesome!! Thanks
  7. I usually use luring for this but have used a more manual approach to training this in the past. With my current girl I taught her drop on the move first and then moved over to doing it from stationary.
  8. Some cccq trials run a veteran class as well... just for a bit of fun. I know when I lived in far north Qld most of the clubs would run a veteran class after the final agility and jumpers classes for the day - no timing or entries or anything, just a chance for the oldies to have a run around a course again. My old boy used to love it! Agidence sounds interesting... perhaps you should start a club!
  9. I haven't trialled in about 4 years due to lack of a dog! But when I was trialling, I used to set up somewhere and tether my dogs. Seeing as I was usually stewarding a trials and doing all kinds of other things (including trial managing sometimes) I was not often with my dogs. I usually would take them to the loo just after arriving at the grounds and then again shortly before going into the ring. Then just before my turn in the ring I would give just a few commands, say heel, sit, heel drop or something similar just to get their attention and then straight into the ring from there. The dog would then usually stay with me until group stays and then get tethered again afterwards. Agility was pretty similar, although I was usualy with the dogs a bit more before my rung as I rarely stewarded in this when I had a dog running. My new girl should be out trailling next year but I have trained her differently to my last dogs (in drive) so I expect my pre trial routine will be different. I think I will probably toilet her shortly before going into the ring and then just before going into the ring give her a focus exercise, probably a short recall to let her win the prey item and then straight into the ring and as soon as shes finished give her the prey item for a reward. She'll probably go back in her crate until stays and then I'll probably do the same thing, a focus exercise to win the reward and then into the ring, and the reward immediately after exiting the ring. I guess we'll see how she goes next year!
  10. I would probably also have to vote for a Sheltie! I have trained and competed with one in agility for several years and she really was an awesome little thing! Do pick your lines carefully as they can be prone to shyness but they are a fantastic little breed!
  11. I always mix my veggie slop with sardines and usually try to push it as long as possible between meals so shes nice and hungry. So I might feed her RMB one morning and then not feed her again until the following evening and then give her the veggies and sardines. Also I find that if I only feed a small amount she tends to eat it. At the moment I give maybe 4-6 tablespoons of veggie mix with half a tin of sardines and she gets that around 4 times a week and has had no probs eating that! Also, when I switched over to BARF, my girl refused to eat veggies, so she would only get veggies once a week to start with but she would only eat them like 3 days after I first tried to feed them and when she was obviously hungry and hadn't been fed anything else! She doesn't do it as often now, thankfully!
  12. I find that offal sometime gives them gas but I figure that I only feed offal once in a while so I can handle the gas when I do feed it! Also are you mixing anything in with the veggies? I find that my girl doesn't like the vegies on their own but if I add sardines or egg or pet mince etc she loves it! Try mixing the veggies and mince together so that there is more mince than veg, then over time decrease the amount of mince to allow for more veggies.
  13. I don't know anything about IPO but I know a little bit about training in drive. Maybe skip training for a few days and give her no stimulation whatsoever, not toys, no training, no games, don't take her out of the yard, nothing - this would make her really bored, then do like a 2 minute session a few days after this and as soon as she hits her peak drive (as in super keen) then stop playing with her and leave. I know that when I was building drive with my pup she was not allowed out of the yard for several weeks, no toys, games, training, walks, interaction with other dogs - basically I had to get her really bored and really frustrated to start bringing out the drive. Also do you use just one prey item as a reward? I found that sticking to one toy works really well rather than continuously switching and changing toys. Like Arya says, contact Steve at k9force for some info - his training in drive program works really well!
  14. Why do you need to create drive? Can you tell us more about what you want your puppy to do and what your plans are for the puppy? Also what type of drive are you trying to increase?
  15. No trimming here either! I'm flat out trying to get weight onto my girl so the extra fat is better for her! But my mum's dog is the opposite and she struggles to keep weight off him so feeds him chicken wings instead!
  16. I really do know where you are coming from - I too own a houdini! The fence didn't work, the run didn't work BUT the electric fence (one of those radio fences) worked an absolute treat! They are a little on the expensive side but once set up and you've gone through the training program the dog is very unlikely to try to get out! My other suggestion is perhaps do some training with her during the day to give her a little more stimulation. Some obedience or trick training for a few minutes a few times a day will help tire her out and also get her brain working a bit! Good luck with her and I do hope you can sort things out!
  17. I do! Every saturday or sunday depending on when I happen to forget to feed her! Ella's on a raw diet and the only way to get her to eat her veggies is to starve her for a day first!!!
  18. If he gets a cold belly maybe you could put a coat on him to help buffer the cold/wet when trialling in that situation. I know someone up in cairns with two small poodle crosses - they both have these cute jumpers that cover their bellies quite well!
  19. BC, like everyone else has said you should have no probs training both at the same time. I too have had show people tell me that I should not do obedience or show training should be done first and only once the dog is really good at that should obedience training be started. Well my girl learnt stand as her first command and I did teach gaiting before heeling but I did a lot of foundation obedience work for a few months before I even started training heel, I teach commands and games first and heel later when they are a little more mature! Now she does both heel and gaiting without any confusion - I do use seperate leads and collars. Show chain and lead for showing and a martingale and stronger lead for obedience. She gets shown pretty often and is almost ready for CCD and she's not quite 18months old!
  20. I voted sometimes because it really does depend on my mood! I was feeling generous yesterday and took the girl out for a walk and to do some training in the rain and that awful wind that we have here in brissy at the moment - I've never worked her in the rain before and she worked really well... no missed drops or anything! In the past if it was raining while I was at training I would just keep training - good practice for the dogs... these days I don't go to a training club so if I don't feel like getting wet then we don't go out!!! :-) But I do try to train in most weather for practice as you never know what the weather will be like at a trial!!
  21. Because I can't be bothered making a large batch of very messy smelly mince/veggie mix my dog gets either some veggie slop or raw meaty bones. I just blend up a variety of veggies (usually sweet potato/pumpkin, some fruit and some greens) and freeze it in small portions. I feed sardines and raw egg with the thawed veggie mix to make it taste better!
  22. I was recently told a story (from a few years ago) where a judge actually refused a competitor from trialling in agility because their dog was too fat. In my opinion more judges should be doing that!
  23. C&Z: If you just want to watch then leave him at home.
  24. Yep just turn up with collar, lead and bait and your money and your all set!
