  1. Wish I could be as trusting of the system as you are. I've only been in this breed going on 6 years now and I know who are the "bad breeders" and who are the "good" and which states they are in and they are all registered breeders. If you want to pay the $22 fee to become Accredited I believe it will only give you and the other breeder first pick so to speak of all puppy and breed enquiries coming in to the CCCQ.
  2. Selsun Blue shampoo can cause your dog to itch more due to the menthol. Selsun Shampoo in the yellow bottle is the correct one to use as it does not cause a tingling sensation like the Selsun Blue but has the same anti fungal and anti bacteria ingredients without the menthol. I also noted someone had mentioned hot spots are a fungus. Hot spots are caused by a naturally occurring bacteria on the dogs skin. At times if conditions are right (Ie break in the skin, excess heat, humidity compromised immune system) these bacteria can multiply quickly causing the hot spot or moist eczema as it is sometimes referred to. Hot Spots can also be a sign of an internal allergy Ie food related. If you have found that chicken seems to be causing an issue read the ingredients on the dog food - watch what kind of fat is used. If they don't list the kind of animal it will usually be chicken fat.
  3. Not sure if this helps but all my dogs that are old enough were x-rayed and scored by Ray Ferguson at Monash. I believe Stuart Mason can do them as well but I'm not 100% sure on that.
  4. I bought one a couple years ago unfortunately they go through batteries quite quickly and weren't powerful enough for the nails of a bullmastiff. My OH has since bought me a cordless Dremel for my birthday and it works a treat. Not to mention it comes in handy for other jobs around the house.
  5. Did you order the whole lot from the guy in Lancefield or did you buy the shed separately? Did it require council permit? ETA what size are the individual pens ie 10m squared Shed was bought separately. Runs were built to our specs by the guy in Lancefield. Pens are 3m x 1.7m. Permit required due to size of the Shed.
  6. Insulation of the roof and walls are next on the list for completion along with doors for the dog doors before winter and rubber matting for the floors inside. As well as custom beds that can be bolted to the ground. Automatic watering system is on the books for install next year as well as cupboards for storage. So still lots to do.
  7. They are excellent runs raven. I think we should have a dog run thread. Thanks. My OH designed them according to what we needed. I'm pretty pleased with them.
  8. This is the inside just after we finished it. Dogs now have bedding inside and dog doors have since been framed.
  9. The first one leaked because the roof didn't over lap the walls and the water went straight down the open edges of the walls. It also leaked at the hinge point for the kennel roof. Will post pics of the inside of the new kennels shortly.
  10. It think we had to wait 8 weeks for ours. He is good though.
  11. These are our current runs... Colourbond shed provides undercover quarters.
  12. There is a guy who advertises in the Trading post under "dog enclosure" - company name is Affordable Smart sheds that does what you are looking for. I bought one of his set ups from him a few years ago... The only problem we had was it did leak like a sieve. We have since built new runs. Will post photos shortly - we had another guy in Lancefield (advertises on Ebay) do the runs for us.
  13. So bad behaviour is acceptable in a small breed because "they are only little" but its not in a larger breed. Another perfect example of owner stupidity and why people should be required to get a license to own a dog!
  14. Looking at the photograph I would be very surprised if he was a purebred bullmastiff.
  15. Of all the attacks claimed to be made by Bullmastiffs we are yet to see any from a pure bred bullmastiff all have been cross bred or dont even have bullmastiff in them at all. The photos in the on line article are not of the dog and I have heard that the photos on the news of the dog do not show a bullmastiff but more a Mastiff cross of some sort. Yet again responsible bullmastiff owners and breeders are dealing with the Media's misrepresentation of the facts in order to sell a story based on sensationalism and lies all at the cost of yet another innocent breed. Just because it has the word "Bull" in it does not make it dangerous. How about the media start reporting the truth for a change - I'm getting tired of my breed being blamed for something they didnt do.
  16. I created my own doggy septic system based on info on the internet. The premade ones just couldnt handle 3 bullmastiffs. I can say the septic systems dont work too well in cold weather and this wet weather has caused all sorts of issues as the ground is so water logged it just wont seep into the ground as it is supposed to. You need to add a certian amount of water each week with a septic tank additive (ie extra good bacteria) to keep in cycling however all this rain has lead to a sludgy smelly mess that is only just now starting to break down after 2 months. Not really good when you have 3 larger dogs and the pit has filled up. I hope once the rain settles I can get it started again as it is a great idea and it was only just starting to get going when all this the rain started. I'm now putting the doggy waste into a compost bin and letting the worms have their fun in there If you want to control the smell either use Bokashi or get a septic tank additive - you can get it from Bunnings. Price depends on which one you get some are rediculously priced. As for worming - I've never had much of an issue with it in regards to worm farms or my compost system. I also only do intestinal worming every 6 months instead of 3.
  17. I've personally found Monash to be much cheaper than my local vets - not to mention much more competent. Prog testing at my local vet was $20 more than Monash and we would have had to wait 24 hours for the result. Monash provided boarding for my girl so all I had to do was drop her off on the way to work and pick her up on the way home. C-section at local vet (pre arranged) was quoted at $2000 if all went well. Monash was $1200. The care and expertise of Monash prevented the loss of my girl's litter because my local vet said she had pyometra and wanted to desex her immediately when all she had was a case of vaginitis. Monash vets and staff have gone above and beyond the required service on numerous occasions and for someone to bag them because they weren't given the same price as this other breeder is pretty poor to say the least.
  18. Mice and rats will cannibalise each other is when they haven't been fed for over a week. That shop should be reported.
  19. Central Animal Records is a National Register. After having issues with my girl's chip information not coming up here in Victoria I did some investigating. Dogs microchipped in NSW ARE NOT registered on the National Register and their information will not come up if you enter their chip details on the National Register. Seems when I discovered this - NSW had the option for you to register your dogs Nationally when they were chipped but they did not openly make that information available to breeders and owners. So if you are a breeder or just microchipping your dog yourself in NSW be sure you request that your dog is included on the National Register. The last thing you want is for your dog to go missing interstate and for the pound or rescue service to not be able to find you because your dog isnt on the national register.
  20. Hi GraceMcC Have you taken your pup to the vet to have this accessed to see if it is a reaction to something? Also have you been in touch with your pup's breeder to see if they have dealt with this issue before as they may have the solution as well.
  21. Congratulations on becoming a bullmastiff owner. The will bring you years of love and enjoyment to your family. The absolute best thing for you to do is to remain on the diet your breeder has provided to you until the pup reaches at least 12 months of age. If you wish to change this diet for whatever reason it would be advisable to contact your breeder first and foremost and ask them for suggestions on diet change. If you dont get much luck there you are more than welcome to send me a private message and I will be happy to send you in the right direction regarding food requirements for a growing bullmastiff puppy.
  22. I know Natural Balance has several distributors in WA including country areas if you are interested. Natural Balance
  23. I currently have 3 dogs each eat a different dry food. My oldest - 5 year old male bullmastiff eats Natural Balance Super Premium Regular energy (Australian owned and distributed). He has a glossy coat, full of energy and there is no doggy smell what so ever. The best thing is the amount of poo is equivalent to a dog on a raw diet which is near to nothing. He has been on it for the last 3 years and I have not had a single issue with it. My middle dog - 2.5 year old female bullmastiff eats Uncle Albers which she loves. Her coat is also glossy, full of energy - she's on it to keep her weight maintained. Unfortunately she does get that doggy smell with it. The main problem with it is what she eats triples in size when it comes out the other end. My youngest - 4 month old male bullmastiff - Advance puppy large breed growth - seriously I have never seen a dog poo so much in my life!!! He out poos my girl and he eats about the same quantity. He has that doggy smell and unfortunately his coat isnt as shiny and nice as my other two. He is currently being moved over the puppy formula offered by Natural Balance. My Verdict - Natural Balance is the only way to go in my view. There are those that may cringe at the incredients because it contains corn but when you compare the amount eaten to the amount of poo at the end of the day - it is more easily digested by the dog and the nutrients are better absorbed than many of the top brands. This is just my experience and opinion.
  24. As per the Dogs Victoria site... Compulsory Microchipping requirements Members are reminded that they are not required to microchip puppies under 12 weeks of age unless they operate a Domestic Animal Business. Under Section 12A of the Domestic Animals Act: •if you operate a Domestic Animal Business you are required to microchip puppies before they leave the premises. • if you do NOT operate a Domestic Animal Business (ie, have less than 10 fertile bitches) you must register all puppies with the Council and microchip them if they are 12 weeks of age or older, but if they are less than 12 weeks of age this becomes the responsibility of the purchaser. Hope this answers you question regarding the microchipping requirement.
  25. best thing to do is to contact the school - advise them of what has happened and request that they include a reminder to all parents about correct dog ediquette in their next news letter.
