  1. I've heard that too, although females tend to wee more than boys (as pups). I think the newspaper training doesn't teach the pup to hold on and that any urinating inside is a no go. It can get confusing for them.
  2. Personally I'd steer clear of paper training and keep going as you are. When the pup was crying in the crate where was the pup? In the laundry or inside? Would you consider having the crate in your bedroom for a little while? All of my pups have slept with me until they're over the hump of losing their Mum and their litter mates, new home etc. Then they sleep where I want them to sleep permanently. I've not ever had a problem booting them out of my room when the time comes and this way puppy feels safe and secure and you get your sleep. :D
  3. Did you mention it to the vet then? I would definitely take the dog back asap to have his ear checked. If he was walking with his head on one side prior to his desexing then it seems unlikely it's from the tattoo. If he continues to shake his head around he is at risk of getting a haematoma which can sometimes be a pain to be rid of or require surgery. Obviously it's uncomfortable for him too. With any luck the vet will have a quick squiz and tie it in as a revisit to avoid a full consult fee. :D
  4. Thanks so much Danielle. Just squizzing at this in between clients so will come back and re read it tomorrow. Will withhold the MEgaderm for a while. Will keep her on the phernegan until she is well and truly on the z/d. I was told to introduce the zd over 7 days. Last night was the first time in so many weeks that we both havent been kept awake with her scratching and chewing, she slept like the proverbial baby yay phenergan). Ive also blocked access to out back and will give it a good rake this avo to see if there's anything sus.
  5. I saw you there Rappie and was hoping you'd post Will pm you now so it's in your inbox for when you're free. Much appreciated!
  6. Because she hasn't had a flea in so long and the scratching isn't in the typical 'flea zone'. The past couple of days has escalated to her paws and under her chin - definitely no fleas. Reliability of results. Which would you say is more reliable? With the Barf, she will be on lamb for one week, chicken the next and so on. Sometimes the roll is mixed meat. The scratching is the same all the time, not up and down.
  7. Sold thanks Anna, I will grab some I hadn't thought of that. She doesn't get any nasties, but I've had her now almost two months so would have thought I would have seen an improvement rather than increasingly getting worse? Thanks Minimum for your post. He's a lovely boy even if his tummy looks a sight So I wonder what the difference is b/w the blood tests and the pin pricking?
  8. I don't know what she was fed in her first home, but apparently it was bottom of the barrel type stuff. In her secondary place of 'care' she was there for 6 weeks and fed Good O's. She was desexed the day before coming here. I've been using Advantix and/or Permoxin and I've been feeding her ready made BARF mix plus bones and the odd tin of sardines. Will sus out Eqyss, Thanks. We do have foxes in our area so vet has asked me to treat her with revolution to rule out fox mange although she said it's not likely. Jemaps is kindly bringing some Revolution over on Saturday. Ausgirl - vetpetndirect have good price on Megaderm. Does anyone know if there's any difference b/w NatureVet Omegas vs. Megaderm? I've had quite a few people recommend Megaderm now but wondering why the vet suggested Nature Vet instead? Blow it, I'll get Megaderm online now.
  9. Thanks guys for the suggestions. Farty I've been assured the Hills is less of an allergen than chicken even though there is chicken in it. Something to do with micro somethings or other that make it an allergy free chicken. I would worry that dry would have too many unknowns, or did you mean the Hills dry? Yes we just started the Phenergan tonight, to be given three times a day until Gertie is eating just the Hills. She needed some relief asap. The vet did mention she would be sleepy, I'm hopeful :D Anna - I asked the vet about Megaderm but the Natures Vet Omega 3 liquid was recommended in lieu of and I have found it at a great price online. However she is already getting one 1000mg tablet of Omega 3 every day (human tablets). From my rough calculations this roughly equates to the Natures Vet Omega 3 dosage?? So should I use Megaderm aswell?
  10. I've recently take on a Shihtzu I've named Gertrude. She was rescued from a life as a breeding bitch in substandard care and cheap food. When I got her her skin was fine and she had an even coat. Both ears were dense with hair and malasessia present. We are still battling this. I've since learnt she is allergic to fleas. She is definitely covered for fleas but if one bites her she falls apart. Due to my grooming business being at home she may get one a week, but often it is dying when I see it. She hasn't had a flea on her for probably about two weeks, I am Aloveening her every 5 days. She scratches all the time and I am at my wits end. I've never had a dog I couldn't fix the itching with so now I need help and to learn more about allergies. Sometimes she feels hot to touch. I took her to a vet I trust yesterday whose plan of action is to start Gertie on Hills Z/D (I chose tins as she wont eat dry). We're hoping it is a food allergy. In the meantime, as I've been told to build the Hills up over 7 days Gertie is on Fenergan to give her some relief. We started this tonight. The vet has suggested a blood test. She said all up with the other processes and consults I am looking at around $1000 going down the blood test route. She said there was also a skin prick testing method? Even if the Hills works, I don't want her eating that forever so think I should do the blood tests to see what it is setting her off? Was talking to a friend this avo with an itchy dog who had it done and the tests came back that the dog wasn't allergic to anything so is this test a waste? Would this Evening Primrose Shampoo I've seen talked about be better than the Aloveen in terms of relief? While I'm managing to keep sores at bay her coat is thinning in spots. I just feel so awful but cant understand that she came to me fine from such a hell hole and now she has gone to sh*t I would really appreciate any advice or ideas! :D
  11. I don't get lamingtons! Sounds like a lovely day out, enjoy :D
  12. I don't know what I'd do. I don't do dogs who misbehave anymore, I tell the owner the dog needs to go somewhere else and give them contact numbers of other nearby groomers. I have two Malts who have been blacklisted from all other salons in the surrounding 4 councils, I'm happy to do them as the owner is so lovely, but that's it. I did my first damage ever to a tiny toy Poodle a couple of months ago and I was gutted. I cut her tail quite badly it left me really shaken up as I've never stuffed up before. Thankfully the dog didn't suffer as her tail, I've since found out, has no feeling as it was broken as a pup. She was wagging it the whole time, my salon wall looked like a murder scene. It was the kind of client who I thought would have gone crazy but she came in and bandaged it with one of Grace's bandaids and left it at that. I had already called the vet to slot her in but the owner was very relaxed about it and didn't take her. She's recommended me to three other people since
  13. Super speedy and is always on call to assist. I'm a groomer and have used several other people before Colin was recommended to me and I've never looked back. Re. moving thread, PM the mods.
  14. Alot of us use Colin http://freewebs.com/clipperbladesharpening/ He is also a forum member here. If you ask for this to be moved to Health/Nutrition and Grooming Im sure you'll get more assistance. Perhaps it is your clippers affecting the cutting rather than the blades.
  15. Foxes carry mange, so when you get back from your visit and you see her itching best to pop on some Revolution. I would use tick prevention on your farm stay! I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time, my main concern would be snakes. I wouldnt carry her everywhere, let her be a pup and explore the world. However I would go over her thoroughly every night for ticks. You could always call the vet local to where your staying and ask them what nasties you need to look out for
  16. Frontline should still work as you cant wash off something in your blood stream! Advantage/Advantix would lose efficacy. I am guessing it is simply our lovely summer fleas. PErhaps your neighbours have them etc. Perhaps try giving the dogs a spray down of Permoxin after their bath. Or talk to your vet about Proban.
  17. I enquired when I had concerns that I was inhaling so much and blasting it off. Using the force dryer blasts off the water and I assumed it would be blasting off Permoxin too. I wear a mask though as my lungs get tight afterwards. I had a flea problem on one of my cats, nothing worked. I put him on Proban and it's been brilliant!! I've had to up him to the tick dose during summer (every 2nd day) and I'm really happy with it. It did take about 3weeks to start working though.
  18. According to Dermcare, Permoxin binds instantly so no need to seperate. Just don't go spraying it directly on the cat! I've been using it on my dogs for years and have two cats. It's really the only product that works when there is heavy flea burden.
  19. This is no good to those whose dogs are allergic to flea saliva though. My pets are all covered for fleas, but the Shihtzu will pick up the odd dying one and then it sends her in to a chewing frenzy.
  20. ADVANTAGE fortnightly will do the trick!!!
  21. Ohhhh Griff I am so so sorry. Sending you all our love and hugs. Sinna was a special girl xoxoxoxo
  22. I've always had trouble teaching to heel but recently met a trainer who was a huge help and I've now got my 7 month old Stafford heeling beautifully. I didn't take her for any on leash walks until we had it absolutely down pat at home as that was only allowing her to think it was ok to pull. I didn't use a leash at all but had plenty of cooked chicken. And every time she came close to my left leg I quickly said Good Girl and gave her a treat. I did this three times a day for only about 5 minutes until she got it and stuck to my left leg like glue. The whole time we were walking and she was trotting beside me to keep up and get some more food. I think the trick was doing it at home in my garage/courtyard where there were absolutely no distractions. It's been the best way I've ever been taught. To give away with all leads/collars etc until we had it down pat off leash at home. I was determined to keep her in a flat collar so I'm chuffed we've got it I'd really try the training only at home before you go anywhere.
  23. Is that her in your avatar? I'm so sorry. Goldies are just lovely dogs. I'm sure she's happy where ever she is.
