miss shel Posted May 14, 2007 Share Posted May 14, 2007 Hi everyone I have a 5 1/2 month old beagle, that is very active. (as im sure all beagles are) I was told not to walk him when he was young, can I start walking him now? If so, how long should I walk him for? He is now 15kg, he runs alot in the yard and we play games with him, but I think a good walk would be good. He loves new places. any help is appreicated. caffiend42 Posted May 14, 2007 Share Posted May 14, 2007 Yep. Could have started any time from the 12 week needles! Make sure you introduce him to other dogs for socialisation too. Asalei Posted May 14, 2007 Share Posted May 14, 2007 Wow 15kg! I must be way under feeding my beagle pups, they are 6 months old and only 8kg's each. Maybe I'm not feeding them enough? We've been walking our girls and taking them on outings since they were 12 weeks old. It's only in the past 4 weeks we've been regularly walking them every weekday morning for about 3km's (they were nearly 5 months when we started walking them). My 3yr old girls only weigh 12.5kgs and my vet says they are very healthy. Maybe we have little girls? I don't know but I wouldn't want my girls any heavier. The vets always say how healthy they are and it's a good weight. I'm actually hoping they dont get much bigger! They are just the right weight at the moment to carry and be a lap dog! miss shel Posted May 14, 2007 Author Share Posted May 14, 2007 (edited) Its definently a beagle and I have only been feeding him premium dog food eukanuba according to the directions on the pack, he doesn't get many treats at all, I do a lot of training (sit etc) with this food allocation. Perhaps our scales are out. But he was nearly 10kg when we went to the vet for his 16 week needle and he seemed to think he was healthy. I do have some pics, I will load them up later today. I'm guessing you were told not to walk him because it's a good idea to have the 2nd lot of vaccinations on board beforehand. I have a larger breed pup and was told not to walk him for more than 5-10 minutes. They worry about the growing bones in the larger breeds. Doesn't apply to beagles, though. There's no need for > 1km walks for a pup. You can get him used to a lead in the backyard first. If you'd like him to walk nicely, look into obedience clubs in your local area. It's a skill you'll have to teach . Because beagles like to use their noses, I wouldn't take him off leash, in case he decides not to come back. I'm sure he'll enjoy all the different sights and smells. I'd keep walks short to start, especially if he's pulling on the lead (bad habit to develop). A game beforehand might help him settle before the walk. Have fun . Addit: About the food: Instructions on the pack are a guide only- my standard poodle became a little underweight with feeding per instructions. For a healthy weight, you should be able to feel the ribs easily (like corrugated iron) but not see them when dog is standing normally. You should also see a "waist" i.e. some narrowing before the dog's rear end- look side on. huski Posted May 15, 2007 Share Posted May 15, 2007 (edited) Some beagles can be a bit bigger, Daisy is 6 months old and 13kg so if your scales are out they mightn't be out by much. And with walking, my vet told me when Daisy went in her for 16 week vacc: "With a beagle walk them as far as they will go, just make sure they will be able to walk the same distance home" Daisy has a minimum of 30-40 minutes of solid walking a day and still has plenty of energy to give. Then about 10 minutes later they up and running up and down the hallway and attacking each other. I wish I could have a ten minute break and have all that energy again! Oh - I saw a "working" beagle in customs at the Int airport a little while ago, the handler weighed the beag on the scales in front of me and it was almost 17 kg! Have a read up on BARF as well (bones and raw foods) - beagles (well, all dogs) LOVE a good bone to chew as well, throw in some chicken wings, eggs, sardines, veggies for variety as well.
