New Pup Has One Blue Eye.. Possibly Go Blind?

We're looking a getting a new AB as a lil sis for Nelson and have been looking at a breeder who is about a 6 hour drive from where we live so we're essentially buying a pup by the pictures and what the breeder tells us. Anyways the breeder has recently informed us that the pup we chose has one blue eye and one black eye. They said that there is a 50% chance that she could loose all vision in her blue eye.

What would you do? Our Nelson is 2 and has hip dysplasia and we had a really hard time dealing with that when we found out and there is ongoing care for his HD. Is it wise for us to get a dog that may very well be blind in one eye? Does it make much of a difference to how the dog behaves? I mean they still have the other eye. My husband and I are trying to decide if we should go with this blue eye baby or whether we should pick another pup from the litter. The breeder has told us that its ok if we change our mind as there are other people interested in her.

the breeder has told us her temperment is very boisterous at the moment but she may settle down in a few weeks when their personalities start to shine thru.

Sometimes blue eyes are a heriditary issue in regards to lack of pigment.

Can the breeder not get the pups eye tested by an opthalmologist.

We occassionally get a blue eye in Border Collies and its not an issue at all in the breed. It takes a combination of 16 genes to get that blue eye. It usually follows down in lines or in pups with no pigment over there eyes.

And in merles blue eyes are extremely common as the merle gene acts on the pigment of the eye. So we get all sorts of blue eyes from both to part in each eye to one or a half blue eye.

The breeder has been very honest & informed of the worse case scenario but only you can decide what you want to do

I have a number of dogs with blue eyes, never heard of it causing blindness. Did the breeder say why?

In any case sight in one eye shouldn’t cause any problems at all. I have a 1 eyed cat and have had a dog and they were completely normal. The only issue is if something happens to the other eye.

Looks very cute to me, and maybe 'just' a 'wall eye', in which case pup will have ok vision, and look very different. the eye may get a bit lighter as it gets older...that's all.

By all means have it tested just to be on the safe side.

We have had border collies and kelpies with these eyes, and have Koolies regularly with one or two...due to the merle gene.

It makes for a very attractive little face, IMO

Cant ansew your? re blue eye but can tell u about my 7 yr old bitch who lost her eye to a accident @ birth; so has only ever had sight in 1 eye the damaged eye was removed @ a few mnths of age ;the only difference with her is she is more sensative to smells & niose ;( :laugh:sounds funnie but not when you burn the toast)She also hangs on to 1 of my other girls ear (& has done since babyhood )ithink she is kissies other eye;But its kinda cute & makes her more appealing ;good luck with your chioce of pup;not sure that a blue eye can lead to blindness ;there are breeds with 1 blue eye.

I am not sure why a blue eye would have 50% chance of going blind?? There are few (VERY rare) Liver coloured Cavaliers in the world & they have blue eyes, but dont go blind. One of my first ponies had blue eyes, and he was alot of things but he wasnt blind! Siberian Huskies can have blue eye/s also.

I know a baby puppy due to injury the eye was removed (about 8 wks old), and she was as happy as larry, is completely normal in every way, and another born with cataracts in both eyes, is slightly wary of new things, but otherwise no one would know he was almost blind, and he is very active & playful, and never hurts himself etc.

Dogs least important sense is sight, smell is far more important to them.

Excuse my ignornace, but was is an AB? and has this pup got demodex running up between his eyes? looks like it from the pics all the hair is seperated like there is a skin itch thing going on............

Back when we had Border Collies, my Grandfather used to say that dogs with one blue eye had split personalities. Certainly fits with my brothers Border who has one blue eye and is very unpredictable

Just looks like a Bi-eye to me, though the photos arent to clear. If your worried get them to take the pup in for another check, or to an eye specialist. Ihave a few Bi-eyes come into the salon. Even a couple of little Malt x's, apart from looking kinda freaky :wink: Ive never heard any bad health issues.
