Bleeding Willy!

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am dog sitting my sisters dog at the moment and my dog is constantly humping his cousin (my husband thinks he's gay!!!!) Both dogs are entire!

The other day I noticed some blood drips on the floor and though it was in one of their mouths. Then I noticed some blood on my sisters dogs bum, so thought, 'oh no what have you done' only to figure out that it was blood coming from my dogs penis!

I took him to the vet straight away. She checked his prostage, and did swabs etc for bacteria, all of which showed up nothing unusual. His willy is bruised though and is cut! He's been using it too much!

Anyway, this morning there was loads more blood. Not oozing out or anything, but much more red blood. He was licking it.

So my question....can a dog 'damage' himself by humping too much, and is there anyting I can do to stop him using it, like bandaging around his tummy!?

I know it seems like a bit of a strange thing to be posting, but you are dog experts after all :)

Why don't you deter the behaviour, rather than managing it.

Tell him to get off the other dog. Physically remove him if you have to and separate them.

It's not homosexuality you're witnessing, its dominance. If the other dog gets fed up with it, you may end up with a dust up.

Stop the behaviour immediately even if it means separating them permanently. As PF said your dog is humping to assert his dominance over the other male and yes you may have a fight on your hands if the other dog suddenly decides he's had enough. No offence, but I really cannot understand why you've allowed the behaviour to continue so long, you should have stopped it the first time he did it.

I agree - I also can't understand why you let it get to this stage :scold:

Baker has had this problem but it wasn't from humping I don't think, actually it could have been but I think it was more from having a way to big stiffy and then doing wizzies and stretching the skin to much until it was damaged. I just left it to heal after the bleeding was stopped and it did so. The blood was really streaming out and I had blood everywhere in the house!

Eli was next to do something to his willy, he had a big stiffy, to big in fact and it all came out then he rolled into the sand and it went back in taking a covering of sand with it and boy he howled with pain cause all the sand was scratching his poor willy. Again I let him take care of it and it's fine now.

I am constantly correcting the behaviour, and am keeping them separated. I understand it's a dominance thing, and I think Charl keeps on doing it coz he's not getting anywhere...because James doesn't tell him to stop. They've had a couple of growl/yelling sessions, but on he gets again! No offence taken by your comments regarding this. I think they are on pretty even grounds as far as their position in the pack is concerned....! My dog is an 'only child' Vet thinks he needs a bit of an outlet!

B&B Glad to hear it's not only happened to me!

I don't reckon all humping is a dominance thing. I think many do it because it feels good! When I babysit a friends lab who stands for my boys like a bitch in season they know they are above him in the pack. Baker doesn't allow him to go near his bed and the lab submits automatically yet Baker will hump him for hours and so will Eli because they LOVE doing it! The lab just stands there or lies down when he's had enough.

I have a dog who has suffered issues with his penis for many years. His isnt due to humping but when we have girls in season he will lick it.

His gets so badly infected that it requires very high dose meds & he will have pools of blood around.

His is a result of the blood vessels popping.Whilst not harmful it affects his coat dramatically9falls out, fluffy, dry) & became a very ongoing issue.

He is 9 this year & suffered badly for 7 years. The last 2 years he hasnt had a break out thank god.

We where able to maintain for the greater par but had to be very diligent at the first sign & treat asap.

We did natural for maintenance but when it was an issue meds.

The meds used does affect there sperm levels at that time. Also if he was used at stud he would have to go on meds afterwards .

I would highly suggest you stomp him because if he has reached the stage he has then it sounds like the blood vessels are popping & many vets dont treat it adequately or correctly many just say let it go but if you dont pay attention the flare ups can end up worse & worse

The other thing is constant humping can do both dogs backs

I sure hope your sisters dog is not on heat.

I doubt it when it says both dogs are entire.

Must have gotten the sisters sex mixed up with her dogs sex.

Seriously if I have had humpy pugs around here it is not tolerated one little bit. I can't stand that behaviour.

I was just wondering why you didn't collect from your dog and desex him instead of him suffering badly for 7 years? You say it's not harmful but then said he suffered? Did I miss something?

I have 5 entire males living together. This does not happen here because I don't let it,PLUS they are always TOO tired to do so,I exercise them 2-3 hours a day and they sleep when we are not going out for runs.

Have you thought of exhausting them into not bothering?

I reinforce their hierachy by feeding in order, they go in the car in order, collars on in order, pattted in order. If I need to do something with my lowest ranking dog and there are higher ranking dogs in the room,I pat them first then see to my lower ranking dog. Only takes a second and as I said I never have problems.

Just something else to think about for you.

Tomas.

Because he was show dog & desexing wouldnt fix his problem.

Spaying doesnt resolve every issue

He didnt hump he simply licked his penis which turned into an infected penis which would bleed as the blood vessels popped, because they popped blood would be there & he would lick to clean which made it worse.

After spending many years on high dose cranberry & the right meds for the time the problem was fixed & has never re occured & yes we still have girls in season.

This dog never hump, never gets a hard ons ,runs with 3 entire males & lives with 11 other dogs. BUT any dog can pop the blood vessels if there more predisposed .He was & as i was very careful to inspect his penis during the time i always new what his status was.

Yes he did suffer ,it was very sore

And yes this was all treated with a repo specialist.

The implant was also considered & it was also decided that it wouldnt fix his issue either in relation to the other issues.

It was decided that the way we dealt with it was the best for him & that once one of the bitches came in heat That we started his anti biotics then.

A very manageable issue BUT if not taken seriously could become a very hard one to fix.

We have 17 dogs & no humpers here.

It isn't usually tolerated at all because my dog is an only dog.....I am only looking after my sis' dog because her bitch is in heat.

I can't leave it to my husband because he doesn't 'get' dogs...it's up to me. I am doing the best I can, and it is something I'm not used to.

It's almost like weird initiation for play, like Charlie does it to get attention.

Tomas... very good points, thanks. I do what you say by feeding first, patting first etc. Exhausting them isn't an option as my sisters dog has HD (another reason I dont want charl 'on' him all the time) and I have a son, so don't have hours on end to spend running my dogs. As it is I have to take them for walks individually as I push the pram. My sisters dog isn't used to walking with a pram, so I can't walk the two dogs together.

It isn't like this is going to last forever. My main concern is my dog and his bleeding doodle! Can it heal, will it heal etc. etc. He isn't out of sorts or appears to be in any pain.

Puggy Puggy - Charlie wishes James was a girl!!!
