Sore Eye

Over the last couple of months Dallas has had ongooing problems with her left eye, it gets red and itchy with a little discharge, she squints and rubs it on everything.

The vets have checked her and were sure it is allergies so she was put on a prednisolone (I think ) based eye drops.

The eye seems to clear up on the drops but flares up as soon as they are stopped.

Tonight while at the beach I noticed a large brown area on the white of the eye (under the top eyelid) that wasn't previously there.

I will take her to work tomorrow and have it checked out, after researching on the net it looks like it may be a melanoma.

Has anyone had experience with any of the symptoms? what was the outcome?

I am really worried it is serious and she may lose her eye, hopefully I am overreacting.

It may not be melanoma- could just be burst blood vessels (old blood goes a browny colour)

Take her to an eye specalist.

I would take her to a vet asap. I took my boy to my regular vet because of dry eye, which just wouldn't improve and in the end he too went to Animal Eye Care in Malvern, because after months of treatment he developed corneal ulcers. He subsequently lost one of his eyes and the other is still being treated with drops, which will be an ongoing thing for the rest of his life. Sometimes it needs a specialist to give the proper diagnosis and care.

The brown pigment is not likely to be a melanoma. Dogs can get pigment changes on their sclera (the white bit) much like we get freckles. One of my own dogs has a large area of pigment on her sclera. In some breeds such as Cairn Terriers, excessive pigment can cause problems.

Even if it IS a "nasty" spot, there are often thing we can do before resorting to eye removal.

The itching and watering may be caused by an ectopic cillia (an eyelash that is growing backwards). These are VERY hard to see without a microscope, but can cause the problems you have described.

See an eye specialist, and I am sure you will get some good news.

Like everyone else I'd suggest a specialist app't as soon as you can.

If it was both eyes I'd suspect Pannus - chronic superficial keratitis (I think).

Unusual to get it on just one though.
