Puppy Going To Friends House For A Visit?

Little Humphrey arrives with me on Saturday (excitement overload  ) and I have been invited to a friend's house on Tuesday (Australia Day) for a bbq. I haven't replied to them yet because I would never leave Humphrey alone at home to go to a party - especially in the first few days/weeks!!! My friends have a little (mixed breed) dog.

So what I'm wondering is if it is safe to take him to visit a friend who has a dog? I don't want to put him in any danger regarding Parvo etc I just wasn't sure if it is only dog parks etc that are unsafe or is it socialising with all dogs in general?

Thanks so much!

Why not? Having a new dog shouldn't make you a hermit. Being left alone is a fact of life for dogs and a few hours on his own won't hurt a puppy. He has to get used to it sometime. After a play and a feed he'd probably sleep most of it anyway.

If the friend's dog is fully vaccinated I think about taking him but I'd take a crate too. What's the friend's dog like? Many a small dog won't be too happy about a bouncy large puppy... you'd have to supervise play and/or separate them.

ETA: There is always a risk of exposure to parvo.. the challenge is to balance it against the benefits of the socialisation experience. Properly supervised, this could be great socialisation for Humphrey. If there are kids there, its important to make sure he's well treated and not over tired. The crate would be useful there.. he's in it if you can't be with him.

one thing to consider - how long have your friends lived there? If they have lived at the house for over a year and haven't had many dogs coming and going the risk would probably be small of contracting any diseases. If they have only recently moved into the house then you have no idea what dogs have been in the yard and the risk would be greater.

I'd be leaving puppy at home.

parties & bbq's are not a great place for baby puppies,

you have people giving them cooked bones, slipping them all kinds of food that might upset little tummies,

kids picking them up by a leg,

a yard that might not be puppy proof ect...ect....

As a vet nurse, I've seen too many broken puppies that went to a social gathering & had some kind of oops, too many variables that you can't control.

I'd wait for a day when you can visit and totally surpervise, and your pups last vaccinations have kicked in.

:thumbsup: I just didn't want to appear to be a 'bad mummy' if I left him in his first few days but if you all think he will be fine for a few hours then I will do that. It's actually not too far from my house (few blocks really) so I can come home and check on him

Daisy - my friends have lived there for just over 3 years and they only have one dog and don't have other dogs visit as far as I know.

Poodlefan - thank so much for the info much appreciated.

Fifi and Monah - yes I think I will leave him at home

Thanks so much for your help everyone!!

Yep I was at a barbecue last weekend and saw a guest slip a cooked chicken wing under the table to the hosts' dog
