What Extra's Do You Give Your Girl Prior To Breeding ?

Just as the title says really  .

Just wondering if there is anything ppl give to their girls, a few months before breeding, i.e. vitamins, herbal remedies, different food, other products used to get the girls into absolute tip-top condition prior to the mating ???

On the same line of thinking...

What 'extra goodies' are given to the boys prior to them being used at stud, again to have them ready and rearing to go, at their peak :(

Thanks for the replies guys  .

So maybe folate and some naturally sourced calcium, is the way to go... Those that use folate, what is the dosage rate ??? Also do you start it the moment the bitch comes into season ???

Whippets, im just curious about why you dont worm, until the pups are weaned ???

Does anyone put their bitches onto puppy food as soon as the bitch is mated ???

I worm everybody as soon as the girls look like coming into season. That seems to hold them and ensure the puppies are relatively worm free until their first worming at 3 weeks.

Folate I give to the girls all the time. 1/2 tablet every night (which I think is about 200mcg). May not help but shouldn't hurt either as I'm told they will wee out any excess. Some only give it for the months prior to a season but I'd never remember if I did that. :offtopic:

I'm not a believer in puppy food for girls. Most of the good dry foods are perfectly suitable for a pregnant or lactating bitch. Feeding girls puppy foods was popular a while ago before feeding dogs became quite sophisticated. Now I believe that a good quality dry, whatever else you feed and naturally sourced calcium rich foods like chicken carcasses, necks, wings, plenty of meaty bones and of course yoghurt and cottage cheese are perfectly adequate for good nutrition.

Is there any research with feeding bitches the folate? I know of the spinal cord research with humans.

Raja. I try to make the place as worm free as I can so I worm the lot (including the cats) when a bitch, that I want to breed, is on season. I do it in the first couple days I notice her in season. I don't reworm the bitch till the pups are weaned. Pups get the usual worming regime from 3 weeks onwards.

Anecdotal, but very much lauded internationally. http://clubs.akc.org/astc/health/astchlth/folic/

For example, Staffords are very prone to cleft palates. I've only had ONE cleft and that was before I started the folate and that litter also contained my only set of Stafford undescended testes as well which could of course be coincidental but you never know. And likewise, my only set of undescended testes in American Cockers in 24 years was in a litter that I didn't own the bitch prior to the litter being whelped so she didn't get folate at all. Her subsequent litters haven't had the problem.

I also give my girls folate tablets.

I start about a month before they are due in season and give 1 tablet (500mg) everyday.

I also use advocate and make sure the girls are done prior to mating.

I don't like to give my girls any chemicals once they have been mated.

I don't change my girls to puppy as they are fed Eagle Pack Power which is great for pregnant and lactating bitches.

All mine are fed Royal Canin Maxi Junior dry food, adults & pups alike. I dont change to adult dry no matter their age. They also get chicken, fresh rabbit, fresh eggs, fish, yabbies :( veges, fresh milk, whatever we make, grow or catch here and they get their mouths on they eat :D
