Kibble Question

My boy isn't a fan of dry food... he will eat it if I made a game out of it. Then I discovered if I let the dry biscuits out for the day, he will eat it up the next day (when the smell isn't as strong).

We changed so many dry biscuits till we settled with Hills. Then recently changed to Advance Puppy Plus (chicken), because that's the only dry that Emmy eats.

What you did this morning by adding little bit of stuff in it is fine... I sometimes put yoghurt in Emmy's. Or, add warm water and mix it up and add in an egg for her... she loved it (but I've only done it twice for her since I got her and we were a friend's house and we didn't bring any dinner for her).

My 2 are mostly on a raw food diet :D

The digestion rate thing is a load of rubbish. People seem to think the body digests everything in one place and it all sits there until it's all been digested. This ISN'T how the body works.

Food enters the stomach where digestion starts. It then passes through the intestines where food is absorbed, from start to finish. Some bits are easily digested and may be digested sooner, but it all keeps moving until it reaches the output and is slowly digested as it moves through.

If those theories of different digestion rates were true, everyone who fed raw meaty bones would be in big trouble, because raw meat is digested much faster than the bone, which in some cases, isn't digested at all. I feed raw and I occasionally see bone fragments in Orbit's poo.

I can assure you that by feeding raw meat with kibble, doesn't mean that the meat 'sits around somewhere' waiting for the kibble to digest. It's all constantly moving and constantly digesting, from the moment it enters the mouth to the point it exits their behind.

if they don't like any kibble- why not feed a raw based diet then?

ditto. I think they are trying to tell you something.

I have them mostly on RAW.. so you think stopping kibble would be best? I have about 3/4 left!?

Is there any way you can prove this? Not saying you're pulling my leg, I would rather look into it further :D

Our boy is the same, BARF patties, sardines in olive oil, raw eggs, chicken necks and ox tails ... but we had a bag of premium kibble for emergencies (ie when we forget to defrost a patty or run out of raw) ... he literally turns his nose up at it. And he's normally *very* food motivated.

I donated mine to rescue ... And grizzled at Timmy that "Lord Muck can't eat what the plebs do ... grumpy grizzle, would you like a knife and fork for your patty sir?". :D

From what I've been told (vets and specialists)... feeding them dry food, especially for still growing dogs (puppies) is important. It has all the proteins, calcium and all that jazz in them, that some raw food doesn't provide enough of in raw.

Emmy gets dry food for at least one of her meals, and Charlie gets at best, one handful, a day... if i'm lucky.

My past dogs were always strictly on raw food, rarely/never gave them dry food. Only started feeding dry food to the 2 i have now.

My dogs wont eat their dry food.

It's not because they don't like it because i have tried another kibble and i had the same results.

I used to mix it with chicken mince but i found out not long ago it's not good because of the digestion rates ~ you learn something new everyday!

Anyway,

WITHOUT changing kibble ~ again .. is there any way i can entice them to eat it ~ since it is their breakfast!

This morning i put 2 table spoons of maceral in it and they've gobbled it up .. but is there another way like dog gravy or something? I've gotten some information about the gravy via another forum .. you can make it at home but one of their ingredients is canned dog food ~ I wont touch that!!!

 Thank you

Where did you hear such rubbish about food digestion in a dog... So many of us feed our dogs dry, mixed with minced chicken frames. I can assure mine have won plenty on it. If they eat it and they do well on it, feed it.

I say tongue in cheek ...it's a wonder the acid in a dogs stomach doesn't dissolve stones.

I agree it is rubbish - but many people here on DOL say it all the time.

We feed kibble for breakfast and raw for dinner. I usually something to her kibble - spoonful of natural yoghurt, sardines, mince, egg, a handful of Ziwipeak...or whatever else I have on hand that she might like.

She eagerly devours anything that comes out of her treat ball or dog pyramid - plain kibble suddenly becomes a delicious treat.

I always found the digestion rate issue an interesting one - my boys get a lot of meaty bones, they strip the hanging meat off and eat the rest with the bone itself...the bone would have a different digestion rate wouldn't it? Even for people meat and vegies on the same plate but different digestion rates apply again.

Not stirring...just curious?

ETA - read the thread now...glad i'm not the only one with that idea re digestion rates!

It sounds like they could be being fussy.

I don't pander to my dogs, if they don't eat what I've given them within 15 minutes I take it back and don't give them anything until their next meal.

It's not like Holly is feeding a low quality kibble and it doesn't hurt a dog to learn to eat it, what if they are kenneled or someone else looks after them or something happens where they need to eat dried food?

Mine are fed on a complete raw diet but there are odd occasions where I run out or something and I need to feed them some dried... I never have any problems and my dogs eat what they are given.

They've got you worked out Holly - turn their nose up at the dried on it's own and you will give them something better

I have no trouble feeding dog casserole on top of the kibble, apart from the problem of needing a bigger bowl now that I only feed once a day.

If I've run out of casserole or we're travelling, I find tinned sardines and / or yogurt on top will get her to eat up. Or skipping a meal.
