Pup Died 8 Days After We Got Him Home

We recieved a puppy from a breeder who is not part of the ankc but is part of their own breeds association. We chose this breed as they claim that they breed a healthier form of the purebred we were looking at getting to begin with and thought thay would be better suited for our tropical climate. Anyway after recieving him all seemed to be fine until he lied down on the lounge floor next to our 10 yr old daughter who thought he was sleeping but he had actually just died this was only 8 days after we had picked him up. We contacted the breeder and informed them what had happened they didn't seem to worried and all they had to say was did we get an autopsy. We then later contacted them after we had gotten over the initial shock and asked if we needed an autopsy as we didn't want to cut up our beautiful pup, they said it was required if there were to be any chance of compensation he had cost us 2000 including the freight so we decided to have the autopsy done. The result came back showing no abnormalities but also no signs of poisoning or suffocation which the breeder accused our daughter of. The vet however narrowed it down to heart muscle failure, congenital or inherited brain disease, sudden death toxins( highly unlikely as they are not common) or lysosomal storage disease which is documented in th origin of this breed. What we are asking is what should happen in this situation the breeder never suggested or offered anything they only accused our daughter of his death and swore and abused my wife when she contacted them by phone. We have never recieved any breed certificates, vaccination reports or health checks for him either which we were told would be forwarded to us they also said who carried out their vet checks but we can't find the vet anywhere and they won't provide us any contact details for them so we could forward our autopsy report on to them or to check they even exist. Any help or recommendation would be much appreciated wheter in our favour or in the favour of the breeder as this is a grey area and we couldn't find any info on the matter. By the way we also offered the breeder that we would pay all vet bills, vaccinations and transport if they would provide us with a pup out of their next litter. Sorry for th length of this post just trying to get all the facts in.

If it's the breed I'm thinking of, they aren't a purebred but a many times cross-bred. If they have a breed association though, maybe you can contact them and see if there's some sort of code of ethics the breeder is supposed to be following.

Also, contact consumer affairs.

I'm sorry Nixon but it sounds like you have been burned.

I would mourn the loss of the pup, and when your family is ready, seek out a new dog - either through reputable rescue or a reputable breeder. I would not go back to this breeder. There are always alternatives for whatever you are after.

thanks for the advice we were aware that he was not pure bred but there association supplies an independant breed certificate as such and on regards to the breed associations code of ethics the breeder we got him from is the head of the breed association so no luck there. We have also contacted consumer affairs and are processing a claim at the moment

How sad - you lost your puppy, and have also been hurt by an apparently unscrupulous person/business.

Providing you have receipts etc- Consumer affairs may be of some help- but the people from whom you bought your puppy most probably had no health guatantee or anything :mad

I agree with the suggestion to NOT get another pup from these people.

How is your daughter Nixon? That must have been very upsetting for her.

she's alright it's been a few weeks now but the babies still look for him when we get home

I am so sorry to hear about your loss.

Did the breeder offer any guarantees before you bought the dog? Do you have any signed documents?

We never received any paperwork for him at all except for an e-mail

of a feeding guide and the only thing it said about any health guarantee was in regards to

the usual hips, heart murmur and mites but nothing about dying from an unspecified fault with the pup. Also the only proof

of vet checks or vaccinations is just their word which doesn't mean much

So sorry to hear about your puppy.

If your vet is prepared to state that nothing you did (ie suffocation etc) caused the death of the puppy and it was most likely due to a congenital or hereditary problem, get him to make a written statement to that effect.

Send that with a letter of demand for a full refumd to the breeder. If you aren't sure what to write, come back here and we'll help, or pay a lawyer $100 or whatever to write it for you.

If they don't cough up then, put them through the small claims court,.

Every fair trading act in Aust says "goods" (and pups are described as "goods") must be suitable for the purposes intended. A pup which dies 8 days after purchse is NOT suitable as intended. You would be very unlikely to lose any suit you brought against the person who sold you the pup.

Any decent reputable breeder, once they were assured that you did nothing to cause the death of the pup, would refund you.

And folks, there have been cases of children sitting on pups and squashing/suffocating them. Happened to a friend of mine, pm came back proving it. Child denied it. Parents didn't know.

Don't be fooled by glittering websites, shiny advertising, and those with fast tongues. The very best pup you can buy is a proper registered purebred pup from an ethical ANKC member breeder, one who knows the breed, and the lines, one who will ensure YOU are the right home for a precious pup, and one who will be interested in the pup for as long as it lives.

My house recently burned down. Breeders who sold me pups, now dogs, offered to fly interstate take the dogs home and care for them until I could do so again.

That's the level of service you'll get from a proper breeder. :mad

Another reason to supervise kids and pups.

The breed makes absolutely no difference

If you want another Aussie Bulldog, please pm me, and I will provide you with the names of a couple of ethical breeders. If they have no pups, they will recommend someone else.

I am sorry I havent answered your PM Nixon. Its been a rather sad day for me.

I know you would like some answers but to be very honest I cant help you really.

I am sorry you have been burnt like this. It is breeders like these that we dont need. Their latest litter that I know of was Neo/Bulldog crosses.

(shakes ones head)
