Bailed Up Again!

Max and I have been enjoying our evening walks. As the days get longer and the weather more pleasant it has been a lot more enjoyable and we have found a route we like and which, until now, has been free of loose dogs. This evening was a nightmare and I'm shaking as I write this but I know you will understand my need to vent! :rofl:

About 20 minutes into our 45 minute walk I noticed a SWF eyeballing us from about 20m. I crossed the road to avoid it but this seemed to be like waving a red flag. Within in seconds it was joined by a Boerboel. I got Max behind me and screamed (don't ask about the language! ) Neither dog seemed to take much notice but as the Boerboel seemed to be be considering having a real go I figured WTF and ran at it, still screaming and swearing. It backed off to the top of a driveway but continued watching us as we moved up the road. The house had NO FENCE!! WTF??? You have 2 dogs and no fence?

I heaved a sigh of relief and figured that was it. How wrong can you be??? Very, as it turned out! We took the next road to the right where I know there are 2 DA Boerboels securelyt fenced in (I have spoken to the owner and she knows that every time we walk past they attack each other because they can't get to us). We again crossed the road to be on the far side away from these 2 when we are surrounded by 3 Jack Russells and a Miniature Pinscher. I'd had it by this time, as one of the JRs came in behind us I spun and kicked it - it yelped and took off. While I was dealing with it the Min. Pin. decided it was a good time to have a go at Max...I turned in time to land a kick in its ribs and sent it flying. All this going on in the street and no owner in sight! I'm screaming and swearing and I honestly think a sailor would have blushed and nobody is taking the slightest notice! By now Max is getting twitchy (he's never heard me really raise my voice before) and I'm left with 2 JRs who aren't backing down. They are standing slightly apart in front of us blocking our way so I bent down and picked up a handful of stones at which they took off.

I AM SO ANGRY I COULD REALLY HURT THE OWNERS OF THESE DOGS!

Tomorrow I will be at the municipal offices with my written complaints when their doors open. This is just not acceptable.

Sounds like my old neighbourhood. Make sure you report those inncidents.

Maybe consider a Doggy Dazer too, I used to have one in the my last neighbourhood:

You poor thing - it is sooo frustrating when a simple evening walk with your dog cannot be enjoyed because of other peoples selfish behaviour. Hope your complaints make a difference. A least Max doesn't get upset - my male dog goes ballistic when confronted by loose dogs when he is onlead.

I dont blame you for being angry.

Hope you get some results from your complaints!!! I can imagine that gang of JRT/min pin cause some problems for the 2 big dogs across the road too if they're always out carrying on in the street!!!

It's terrible that owners are so lax about the care of their own dogs, let alone the impact that lack of care has on other dogs and their owners.

I would have done very similarly though, I don't hold back. If the owner was present and trying to take control I would be more understanding and help them gain control, but when they're not in cooey, the dogs would be put in their place well and truly AND I'd be visitng the houses of the dogs, without my dogs ensuring they understand the situation and the seriousness of a FORMAL complaint about DANGEROUS dog behaviour.

We got rushed at by a dog off lead yesterday on our midday walk.... went past a building site and the guys dog was wandering, he recalled him as soon as he noticed him running, he had got to us and had a little sniff, but he turned back then he tried to come again by this stage the owner was over to grab him. Boof Lilly & I happily stood firmly still until he gained control, as he was making an effort and the dog was young so training was clearly a WIP. Once he had him, we let them have a little sniff and introduction in a much more controlled way. Then off we went.

I hate days like that. My problem is that Buster wants to go anything that he see's so I hate the idea of getting stuck somewhere with noone to help me a brawl going on.

This has happened to me 4 times now- offlead dogs running up to us on walks while we are of course on lead.

The last one was just Monday... Coming to the end of the walk, so happy with Banjie becuase he didnt bark at anything once then out of nowhere this SWF came running, Banjo grabbed hold... As awful as it sounds OH had to pick him up by his check chain because it was chaos and no one could get a grip of either dog >:D

this young kid came out and was apologising etc and took him away.... we are walking off and we hear this huge yelp I think the kid hurt that poor swf.

Argh makes me so angry.

I can really understand that ... "poor Max", but "lucky Max" too for your protectiveness.

I always walk with a stick when I take Tonka for a walk, and make no mistake, I know how to use it & will use it if I need to. He's only a puppy (14 weeks) and I don't want him to get aggressive with other dogs later on because of other idiot dog owners out there. He's a DDB and will grow into a big boy so precaution on our part is a must. I will go ape-s#it if anything like this happens to him while he's still a pup !!!

It's just so frustrating isn't it.....

We had the same here, the dogs attacking each other behind the fence when dogs would be walked pass. So the owners thought, we'll just let then out. They didn't last long, I think every neightbour rang the ranger.

What are people thing.......................not much.

Thanks for the support guys. Max and I are fine. Bless him, he thinks everybody is his mate and wants to play even after being attacked and bitten by an Anatolian Shepherd in June - he's fine with other dogs. Me? Now I'm the one with a bad attitude. I don't hold out much hope for anything being done. Unlike Aus, South Africa (and Jeffreys Bay in particular) is very lax about loose dogs and the chances of anything happening at all is very slim. However, I will follow the legal route until it fails (shows what great expectations I have! ) and then I will take matters into my own hands.

Today I will be purchasing liquid pepper spray from one of the local security companies. I have a nice stick on order from a mate. God help the next dog that bails us up! I am over having to deal with other people's stupidity!

I think it is a South African thing! The more aggressive your dog the more macho you appear? I dunno...it just seems to me that socialising dogs, teaching them manners and above all keeping them in your yard or on a lead when out in public is too much to ask of the average South African. I'm not having a good day so perhaps I should refrain from commenting further on this issue at the moment.

That would have been so traumatic for you.

After encountering an off lead staffy (male and not desexed) which was then followed by a choc labrador attacking my dog all within 1hr, I decided that I wouldn't walk in those areas again.

I now walk my dog in the very early hours of the morning before the birds awake, yes it's dark but at that time there are no loose dogs wandering around. Some owners don't give a stuff about what their dog gets upto and probably think it's "good that their dog goes out for his/her own exercise".
