How Much To See A Vet In Brisbane?

A friend's elderly mother is paying $120+ for a consultation with the cost of tests and meds extra. This is a lot higher than I pay in Canberra. Is she being ripped off or are these standard rates?

If it is expensive, can anyone recommend a vet within easy reach of Indooropilly?

Hi, I'm in Brisbane and this week at the vet I paid approx. $130, but that was for a consultation and medication. I think a consultation is usually between $60 and $80.

But I'm sorry I don't know of any vets in that area.

Here in a clinic I payed about that for conjunctivitis by the time I payed for the consult, testing and medication- I didn't go back to them but that wasn't because the price was excessive it was because I thought the service was crap!! I would happily pay that for a vet that had excellent service and was really thorough.....

It really depends what the tests and medications were because they can add up really thickly.

ETA- consults are generally between 60-80 without any testing or medication.

That seems very expensive - I pay around $50 for a consultation. If the lady is around Indooroopilly she could enquire at the UQ vet clinic perhaps.

No it was a standard consult. This woman is in her 90s and adores her dog and I think she is being ripped off. The $120+ was just the consulting fee - she paid extra for tests and medication.

It would appear that the poor lady was taken advantage of unless there were other costs involved. Is your friend able to contact the vet clinic on her mother's behalf and seek a clarification of the bill?

Centenary Vets at Middle Park are great vets, and should be cheaper than what she is paying now.

Prices that vets charge do tend to be a bit higher in that inner west area, so she hopefully she can travel out to Middle Park, which is about ten or fifteen minutes away by car.

If only it weren't a few suburbs away.....I have an excellent vet at The Gap. Consultation is around $45. Many times I've thought she's made a mistake with the bill, because it's been so reasonable. But I go to her because she's so good and communicates so well. The reasonable charges are just icing on the cake. All our neighbours now go to her, too, even tho' we have to drive into the next suburb.

Someone I know got an enormous quote for desexing a small dog, in that Indooroopilly area. She came over to my vet for nearly 1/2 that amount. And the vet even did some fixing of a tooth she noticed while the dog was 'under'....& didn't charge for it.

I used a vet in Yeronga (Fairfield) which is the next suburb over and from memory they charged $50ish for a consult ( nearly 3 years ago though).

Poor lady that makes me sad that is sounds like she was taken advantage of :(

No vet would charge a normal consultation at $120!

It would either have been: after hrs, a specialised consult, or an extended consult (but still pushing it!)

There has probably been some miscommunication about what she has actually paid for, but I have never heard of a vet charging $120 for a normal, 15ish minute consult at a normal (gp) veterinary clinic.
