Mim Posted August 8, 2013 Share Posted August 8, 2013 Ok, anyone else had this problem? At puppy school, Tyrion is raring to go! He does whats asked of him, is hyper as anything, loves playing with the other dogs, responds well to training. Tried doing some training with him the last couple of days at home. And he just looks at me as if to say "you have to be kidding yea?" and turns around and goes back to his crate. I tried a couple of different types of foods, but he literally just turns his nose up at it and walks away. Am I doing it at the wrong time of day? Treats not good enough? Is it his age? 14 weeks? that hes trying to get out of doing stuff. Seriously its dinner time, and I thought oh cool he'll be nice and hungry I'll do some work with him, and he is just like "meh whatever. I'm not THAT hungry if I have to sit/stand/drop/stay for it, I'll just lay in my crate" Suggestions?! What time of the day is puppy school? Try doing training at home at that time of day too, maybe? Does he do some training and then walk away? It could be that his attention span just isn't good enough yet and he's bored/tired. What kind of treats are you using? Try something high value like sausage or BBQ chicken and if he doesn't work for that then I'd say you have a very stubborn little boy on your hands! :laugh: Obviously not all corgis are the same but the ones I've had have always been enjoyed training, even as puppies, and will consider any food to be good food. aliwake Posted August 8, 2013 Share Posted August 8, 2013 How did Nixon get on Aliwake? well, my husband took him to the vet, who tried to stimulate a cough with pressure on his throat (apparently a good indicator of kennel cough, but not 100%), but didn't have any luck. However he decided to work under the assumption that it is kennel cough, and charged through the teeth for antibiotics and cough suppressant Not very happy. And my husband thinks I'm ridiculous for getting information from the internet and believing that antibiotics are not necessary at this stage. The vet told my husband that it is bacterial (he did check), though from what i read it's viral AND bacterial? So who knows. Given it's a shared decision, and hubby took him to the vet, he's now getting antibiotics. Having said that, he was definitely worse last night/this morning - coughing more often, and seems to alternate between hyper and a bit lethargic. Not sure if I'm imagining that though. Either way he'll be missing his obedience graduation and hopefully the antibiotics will help whatever it is, even if it isn't kennel cough. I gave him the cough medicine last night which didn't noticeably help, and his first antibiotics this morning. I really hope he starts to feel better soon. When my pugs had kennel cough we used OTC human cough medicine (bisolven), much cheaper than any animal medicine and it's basically the same. But not a suppressant, because if there was any gunk in there I didn't want it sitting still and getting infected, I wanted them to move it and cough it up. I was running after them with tissues like they were toddlers with colds :laugh: The cough also seemed worse when they got cold, so try and keep him and the air warm (I think this is why it seems worse late at night and early morning, because the air gets colder). It is sad seeing them unwell, I actually thought my boy had an obstruction in his airway he was hacking and choking so badly, but it was "just" KC :/ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was probably most annoyed about the cough medicine the vet gave us - it was over $40!! I wish I'd been able to be there.... Never mind. At least we have it now. Guest hankodie Posted August 9, 2013 Share Posted August 9, 2013 Poor Nixon My other dog Odie also had kennel cough as a puppy and I also thought she was just trying to cough up a furball. I didn't realise until later that day that she was a bit ill. She bounced back in about a week or so after some rest and some cough drops from the vet. I hope Nixon feels better soon! Question for those who live in a multidog household: how much interaction do you give between your older dog + your pup? Hank is in love with Odie. He follows her everywhere. She's generally very good with him when playing but if I see it getting too rough I intervene (also worried about his joints but they are gentle most of the time). I give them about 4-5 short interactions a day (always supervised) is this too much/too little? I know it sounds mean but I don't want Hank to look to Odie for everything as she does have some bad habits that I don't want him to pick up. I know I tend to worry out of proportion when my baby is sick! :) Also, you clearly take some bloody amazing photos Hankodie! Absolutely gorgeous! I would love to have some beautiful pics of Nixon while he still has his puppy gorgeousness. He's a very handsome boy, but so hard to take pics of cos he's brown, and he seems to always have his head down unless he's about to jump on me :) Needless to say I have heaps of photos of him sleeping! I have a friend who takes great pics who has been away overseas for the last 6 months, but she's getting back in about a week, so I plan on hitting her up for some family portraits asap :) by which I mean mainly pics of the pretty one (Nixon) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've never had more than one dog at a time, but I do think that giving your pup alone time is a great way to go about it. Especially if the older dog has bad habits. Nova and I went to Happy Hour at the Uni bar this arvo! Aliwake if you were in NSW I'd totally offer to take photos of Nixon - puppies are my favourite subject LisaCC Nova sounds like quite the busy bee! How does he do in crowded situations? I took Hank in the car today for the 3rd time, he hates it he was so stressed, panting and whining the entire time. I tried giving him treats & lots of praise for settling when I put him in. Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it? Odie seemed to take to the car right away when she was a pup. We went to a busy-ish part of the neighbourhood and sat in the back of my hatchback so he could watch the world go by. He did well, I rewarded him for staying calm which he did for the most part. What type of socialisation did everyone do with their pups at 8-12 weeks? I've decided not to take him to puppy class under my trainer's advice - instead she's setting up playdates with older, calm dogs. Then Hank starts an all ages obedience class after his vaccinations are completed. I really want to work on him being calm/neutral around dogs as our frenchie is quite reactive (she's so friendly with all dogs but on the lead she is way too overexcited). When we were sitting a few little girls came up and ooed and ahhhed over him and they all asked politely for permission to pat him, really impressed how polite they were about it (obviously under their mum's instruction but it was still lovely they asked!) LisaCC Posted August 9, 2013 Share Posted August 9, 2013 Hank you are doing exactly what I am/have been with Nova, No puppy preschool for us, We have been meeting calm known dogs and only allowing play once he has been paying attention to me instead and acting calm. We should be starting Beginners obedience with our trainer (and future agility mentor) this month as soon as their winter holiday is over. The only problem we have had is when he met his sister for the first time since he left the litter last weekend (he is 13weeks currently), she was very much the alpha pup and still is, Nova got put in his place with a snap when he jumped on her and then he suddenly got the crazy eyes on and tried doing zoomies on lead. I managed to calm him down by going for a walk away from her but after he decided barking at his sister who didn't want to play was a great idea... Combining two questions, Nova is great with crowds as I took him out in my arms from 8 weeks. We went to places like kids sporting ovals during morning sport, down the main street, around uni, the local footy. Those girls seem much more polite than most the adults that try and rush me and Nova I'm more than apt at telling people No! I did have to put myself in front of 4 screaming 18year olds this afternoon. "Please don't squeal at my dog". Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also noticed she has grown out of the Ezydog harness! I think Nova has probably 1 more week in his! Oh she is getting huge but it does still fit her. She has about 4 harnesses so there's all sorts in the pics. Gus used to haaaaate the car, do the same thing. Lots of carrying on and sulking, but we just kept it up and he's made the connection that car takes us to parks, beaches, cafes, visiting people so now he LEAPS in and waits to be seatbelted in.
