Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Maggie had a set back overnight. She had severe diarrhoea, real thin, brown watery muck. rung my Vet at 12midnight who met me at the Clinic. Maggie had a temp. of 40 degrees and was very distressed. Vet gave her scourban and kept her in for observation. He was concerned too. Maggie came home around 3pm this arvo. He is like me, at a loss as to why this happened. She had lectade in her water at vet's and an antibiotic injection and he will see her again tomorrow morning.

This had to happen today, the young 7mo pup had a very big show 2hrs drive away so only had about 2hrs sleep.

I just hope and pray Maggie's IBD issue resolves very soon or I will be in the looney bin. Apart from Dad, she is the last link I have to my deceased Mum.

Please everyone, help me pray that Maggie recovers asap.

Update 20.6.05- Spoke with Maggie's Specialist this morning over the severe attack of diarrhoea at the weekend. he suspects the Z/d was the culprit and that Maggie is super allergic to Chicken) Z/d is chicken based ). He has suggested we try the Eukanuba FP(FishNPotato) and see how that goes. Our Vet had to order it but should be there Tuesday, tomorrw. so for today it is back to turkey mince and potato.

If the FP doesn't work then we have to try the Hills Prescription Turkey and Rice. Geez if that one does not work then I give up.

Thanks Lablover. It has been a real roller coaster, what with having to PTS our 9mo pup July '04 due to severe genetic problems, losing Mum Nov '03 and my old Collie April'03 it has been a nightmare to say the least.

At least our 8mo pup is fighting fit and eating us out of house and home .

LouiseBrooks, and I/d is upposed to be for dogs with upset guts etc, go figure?

will keep you all posted how Maggie goes with the Eukanuba Fish and Potato.

Doing it all gradually thought, with a bit of cooked turkery mince and potato and a bit of the FP dry.

I just pray to God that she can tolerate the FP, cos after this there is only 1 only food to try. At the moment am really tearing my hair out as I also care full-time for my 82yo Dad( lives with me ) and he is not well either.

thanks everyone for your thoughts

My IG was diagnosed about 4 yrs ago, age around 8. He was put on cortisone and it changed our lives, the only food he could eat was Hills Ultra ZD. He didn't like it and i tried to prepare it in various ways to tempt him. Read on the web that sweet potato was good so eventually started adding that.

Each night was a fight with food, he wouldn't eat but was hungry and he would bark at me and claw at me to give him food. I would make a game of it with the biscuits but in the night he'd wake me several times to demand food. Got to the point after 2 years of sleep deprivation that I couldn't cope any more. Went to a new vet and said I can't cope. They suggested 2 other drugs. The first didn't work and we tried salazaprin and he eventually became the dog I'd first rescued. He still isn't keen on the food but he doesn't wake me several times each night any more. It saved my sanity ... I now add cottage cheese as well which helps.

Maggie has only ever refused her food twice, that is when all the alarm bells went off.

She loves food big time and would probably eat 24hrs a day if I let her

We just have to see how we go with the Eukanuba FP and pray to God that it works

  • 4 weeks later...

About 2 wks ago we had to take Maggie of the FP as tummy upsets again and buy Rabbit to steam( our last food source/resort). we thought she was doing ok until yesterday-

Our girl " Maggie" took sick again 13.7.05 with gurgling tummy. Vet checked her and her heart rate was slow for her , 80 beats per minute( she usually is about 100). Her feet were cold and her nose very dry and hot. He tried to get a bood sample from her but it was clotting as he was taking it so haemtology was not able to be done. She had and injection of cortisone plus her upped her preds to 5mg twice a day. we came home and she settled again.

14.7.05; this afternoon Maggie was unsettled, asking to go outside and then not wanting to. She ate her tea and I took her outside and she promptly had an acute attack of blackish diarrhoea. Phoned vet and took her straight done( of course this was after clinic closed). Vet did prelimary checks and then said Maggie was not well and they would place her on IV fluids and keep her overnight.

Her specialist said today( before this latest attack) that if there was not a marked improvement in the next couple of days things were not looking good at al for Maggie.

Please include her in your prayers tonight, we do not know how much longer she will be with us, she is not even 8yo yet.

Life really sucks - since April 2003 we have lost 14yo Collie, then wife/mother to cancer and then 7/04 had to pts 9mo pup due to too many genetic defects.:love:

Inspector REx

You and Maggie are in our thoughts, I hope things pick up for you both.

Can I please ask something here?

A friends dog was diagnosed with I.B.S last year, just over the last few days, they have noticed the dog vomiting chocolate coloured vomit, no the dog has not eaten anything of that colour, they are organising some meds, but just wondering if your dog had vomit such as that too?

Hugs to you

Holly and family

Inspector Rex,

From what you are describing, can you tell for certain that your vet has tested for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency as a couple of other posters suggested?

What you are describing sounds like classic symptoms of EPI to me and if Maggie has EPI she will not improve until such time as she gets the correct medication.

Please check with your vet to see whether they have tested for EPI - this is a special test (a TLI test) and if they haven't please get her tested ASAP.

If she has it she can lead a normal life on the correct supplements.
