Long Haired Dogs

As the title says, how do you stop a boy dog's stomach hair from getting wet & then all gungy when he wees? :D I've only ever had 1 other male dog & being a short haired GSD I didnt have this problem but Jonty's hair on his tummy is always getting wet & then mucky when it dries because it gets wet when he pees. I tried cutting away some of the hair particularly in front of his sheath but it really hasnt made a lot of difference, even the hair on the inside of his backlegs seems to get gunk on it (& I have no idea how unless he's peeing backwards :) ) . The hair at the side that hangs down ie on his flanks gets all mucky as well, I dont know what the heck he's doing  .

I know he's only 6 months old & he's not even lifting his leg yet, but he has a LOT of coat already & it's pretty horrible when its all gunky. Im having to wash him every week & even then by the time 4 or 5 days have passed it's disgusting again.

Help ...... please........ anyone?  :p ;)

ETA - I wil take a pic & post it if anyone wants to see how disgusting it is  .

Eerr...Bronx has always put a 'tilt' to his peeing as he doesn't cock his leg either...but he's never gotten his belly messy...

Sabe on the other hand has been cocking his leg since he was like 3 months...but he also 'tilts' if he decides not to cock his leg - unfortunately he does occasionally get his belly messy if he...umm...gets overly excited and can't control himself

But...sorry...no help for you...but i offer my sympathies!!

KK, no tilting yet, I can just imagine it may well get worse once he decides he can/should tilt  .

Varicool - ;): that may well be the next step ;) , thank god Im not still showing him ;)  .

ETA, Im still trying to work out HOW he manages to get it everywhere  , & in the meantime I have a dog whos started to hump everything in sight including Ebony's back leg at training last night :D :p .

ETA again - who's great idea was it to get a male dog, & I sooooo wanted a female :) .

Lol...my boys have always tilted to pee if not cocking the leg - they tilt their hips down and forward slightly so their pee don't hit even close to the front legs - thank goodness!

Gee...Jonty picks his moments huh?? i mean...at training???

Icky Q...perhaps it's not just pee? Perhaps he gets overly excited sometimes like Sabe does...and just...well...

Bear is now 13 months and started cocking his leg a couple of weeks ago and doing the tilt thingy and also gets his hair on the front leg when it shoots out so fast  when we first start our walk as his is very longhaired but still on the odd occasion he gets the wet tummy hair thing happening, I rub him down with a mix of woolwash and warm water, he has his own towel so a quick rub dry and a brush and good as new until the next time. (Which I may add is usually the next day  )

Yes just for the heck of it, post the piccies please :p

KK, oh yuck, that just doesnt bear thinking about, does it?

Wolfgirl, its almost like doggy porn  but here they are  Dont look if you are squeamish :p .

ETA, I know that probably doesnt look that bad, but the hair is all stuck together & when you look & its down the sides & even between his legs as well, its not very nice. Can't remember what day I bathed him, but its less than a week ago since he was done, once it gets like that it just gets worse ;) .

A quick rub down with a baby wipe after a pee is all that is usually needed.

I still prefer boys and long haired ones at that.

A pack by the house door, another in the glove box ... need to take out shares in the company. Not that he needs cleaning up very often now he's cocking his leg properly.

My lad is still being shown so trimming isn't allowed for him.

Caring for pee feathers is a real pain in long coated dogs if you're showing them because the urine will burn the hair and it will subsequently break off. I wash my males' pee feathers every day and spray them with Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil and find that this works very well. The oil acts as a barrier between the urine and the hair. If you're showing your dog you will need to wash daily, once a week isn't often enough and you'll find that the feathering in this area will become coarse and sparse and you'll end up with a gap which doesn't look good.

Seabreeze Oil isn't the only product available, if you do a search of the major grooming products you will find several alternatives.

Thanx everyone, Im glad that washing all the time is OK (& doubly glad it's not just my dog that has the problem  ) as I was a bit worried about washing him all the time but I will just give his belly a bit of a wash when it needs it if its OK. Since Im not showing him now I may well do the shaving thing - of course just on his belly  .

Hesa, since it's only a small area I think I will cut it short with scissors & see how he goes rather than stress him out by using the clippers.

yep i pee feather wash every night rain, hail or shine.

If you want an inbetween fix buy some potatoe flourBaby powder if desperate but potatoe is better) ,sprinkle a little & brush it through but still use a face wash/wet ones to wipe.

As gross as it is a gunked up twinkle can become infected & be a right pain.

The plush puppy coat reviver is also great for brushing through that area & freshen things up.

The clipping wont do an awful lot except get other areas dirty

Thanx showdog - I think :rofl::rofl: .

Funny thing is that I havent noticed his front legs getting wet or dirty at all - just his belly & low down on the insides of his back legs :) .
