I had someone in my puppy class that was going on 20km bike rides with their 4 month old puppy! I thought that was a bit much to say the least. Poppy is fully vaccinated and has been going to puppy school since 8 weeks. She really enjoys hanging out with me. We had a nice adventure yesterday, went to petstock, the walk and then on a bit of a drive. She was very good. The walk was a bit too long that was why I picked her up! I'll reduce it next time. She is getting rather heavy to be carrying!

WinGus increase the amount of time between the marker/clicker and the treat. So sit, yes, wait 1 sec, reward. Slowly build the time up. If you ask her to sit and puppy doesn't, don't then get a treat out. Either walk away and try again or physically put her in the sit.

I felt guilty half way around the walk and picked her up and carried her! That got lots of comments. It did work well though. A walk and a training session meant a nice sleepy puppy

Cool dogdude! You didn't bugger up the aluminum then obviously. I like the first pic with Oscar eyeing the jump off.

The first Billinghurst book was published in 1993. That book certainly didn't commercialise anything. From between then and now something has gone whacky. I doubt Billinghurst would be impressed. Poodlefan I think the problem is people here the term on places like this, don't get the books, don't do the research and think they are feeding the correct diet.

So the latest advice is that you don't walk puppies. You socialise them and then let them free exercise. Whilst I agree with not going for massive long walks I can see the benefit of short (30 min) walks. My older dogs all got walked from 8 weeks of age. They are border collies and I knew I had to keep them active etc. Neither seemed to suffer from this. Brock my 2yo is a total couch potato and didn't need to be walked as a puppy (I'm on acreage btw). The latest addition is a different matter! She is a bit of a 'doing' dog. A day of not training her and I can notice it!! So who is walking their puppies?? I don't want to feel like a mean mum! Dog ownership used to be much easier in the old days

Proplan is on special at Petstock as well. The 3kg bags are $19.95. I am well kibbled up now!!

I know of one pup that was on a RMB diet that was having fits. Puppy had a calcium deficiency. The problem is lots of people aren't doing the research. They don't know why they are feeding the bones, supplements etc. Or what each bit does for the dog. Or the side effects. I think if you want to do this sort of diet you have to know how to balance it.

Correct. I am not too impressed with the way the BARF diet has been changed from what it was originally. Billinghurst does say that chunks of meat are better than mince though. As the chunks exercise the dogs jaws etc. But meat on the bone is preferred.
-
An American site, that explains it. They manage to commercialise everything! I couldn't find anything on there from Billinghurst himself. Feeding mince patties to your dog everyday is not BARF.
-
I first started feeding BARF about 10 years ago. There were none of these patties then. The original book suggests feeding different things everyday and not feeding a complete meal in each sitting. The basis was raw meaty bones with other stuff. It was supposed to be an easy diet, toss the dog whatever you had on hand type thing. Mince was not considered to be of much value. When did it change to feeding these patties and has Billinghurst endorsed this change?
-
The basis of BARF is raw meaty bones. I suggest getting the book. If you are not happy with the coats then they may be lacking in oils. Feed your sardines (in oil) once a week and look at adding some omega oil (fish oil, evening primrose oil, flax oil).

Thanks for the DVP tip, I'll look into that one. I do pretty much do a raw diet but I like to feed some super premium as well.

The Natures Gift isn't a bad food. Not bad ingredients. Is quite pricey though. $5-6 for a 1k bag. Probably be good for a little dog. The dogs like it. Don't know if I would feed it all the time but for a change it works well. Thanks for the tip on Advance! I lovveee specials.

Hey that is my 3 as well! Do you buy the big bags and do you find they stay fresh?
-
I have a puppy, 2yo & 12yo border collies. Their diet is premium kibble + bones etc. They all really need a different kibble but when you are buying EP etc it gets rather expensive buying 3 different bags. I tried them on the Chicken Holistic EP but none of them are that keen on it and the 2yo is choking on EP! Does anyone know of any other one size fits all kibbles?
