  1. I have shar pei and chihuahuas and they get on really well together, even when all entire. The shar pei feel in no way threatened by the chi so there are no issues. I have left them out together unsupervised, especially my male chi, but the female chi can't be trusted not to find a small escape hole, so they are supervised whenever they are out with in the main area with the bigger dogs, for this reason. I now have a secure area for the chis, where they can all see each other, but I know the chi's can't escape. I've also had shar pei and beagles together without any problems. Beagles generally just want to have fun and get on well with everybody. But they are not a great deal different in size.
  2. Gorgeous pups Hellier. He looks like a right little piglet though! Good luck with them, and I look forward to more pictures.
  3. Oh Cassie, I missed this thread till now. It would have been so frightening for you - so very glad all is well. Your big boofa's are dol favorites you know!! You better post a couple more pics, just so we know that he and Zephyr are both okay!!!
  4. Brave little Saxon - thanks for sharing. Whenever my chihuahuas (2kg) hear my adult male shar pei (22kg) barking at a someone or something walking past, they obviously feel that he can't handle the job on his own and require their immediate assistance and backup. Such fearless little mites with the hearts of lions, our little dogs. eta. Just read Moon's tale of bravery - poor unappreciated heroine of the of the bumbling 2 legged ones! I am sure my Dylan would appreciate her backup any day. He's well used to stepping around annoying but well intentioned assistants with no clue what they are actually supposed to be attacking.

    Chihuahua

I have 2 longcoats and I don't find they shed much at all compared to other breeds I have owned (beagles, shar pei, my cat). Nor does their hair tend to stick to my clothes like the other's hair does.
  6. Just wanted to add this one as it's so funny: Charlie Chaplin routine
  7. I get tired of people, including vets, telling me that shar pei are agressive dogs - "they're fighting dogs you know". I've even had vets scared to check them over - and they are always pleastantly suprised when my dogs stand quietly and wag their tails.
  8. Just wanted to add a Having had beagles, I know how frustrating and stressful it can be, living with destructive and escapist dogs, although they did not have the strength and power that your boy would have. This thread just makes me want to hug my shar pei for being so much easier to live with. I've never had one that was destructive or escapist, and I am glad to be reminded of that, though unfortunately at your expense. The chis can make a bit of a mess, but at least it is a very small mess and they are easy to contain. Good luck with your naughty Champa!
  9. A shar pei from one of our shar pei rescuers on the forum. Can be very easy to live with dogs - not overly energetic (or destructive) and can usually cope with time alone. Many are great with other dogs, especially if other dogs are smaller and less threatening ones. Shed alot when moulting in spring, but not bad most of the year. Nice compact medium size.
  10. Great your on the northside. I would suggest you go to Big Dog Pet Foods at Lawnton for some top quality, complete raw food. I buy my meat from there (Breeder's Choice is what I use) and feed all my dogs from puppies to adults on it. I sometimes add boiled rice or if lazy some dry food, but I think with your pup's issues I would be avoiding dry food, at least while young. She would also get more moisture from a natural diet and will need to drink less. I personally go to Dr Rob at My Pet's Vet at Bald Hills. He is a lovely, caring man and explains everything very clearly. Dr Susan at Anvet Kedron is also highly recommended on this forum. There are specialist centres at both Appleby Road, Stafford Heights and Albany Creek.
  11. Where in Brisbane are you - North/South/East/West/Central? Easier to make recommendations. Aren't there very strict laws in Victoria about pups sold with a genetic defect? Perhaps the Vic people here could advise. By the sounds of it the breeder knew the pup had some sort of problem, and failed to advise you of it.
  12. Perhaps you can let us know where in Qld you are and someone may be able to recommend some well respected vets and possibly a raw meat supplier, which may be a better option than a dry food. Only you can decide if you want to return the pup or to continue with her. A tough decision.
  13. Wonderful photos - thanks for sharing!
  14. That's really sad Dotty that you didn't know till it was too late. This is exactly right. They just are. This thread has brought tears to my eyes just reading it and thinking of her. I have had many many dogs in my life and each and every one were, and are, very special in their own ways, some just a little more so than others. But one fat, generally lazy, undemanding angel (with a tiny bit of devil thrown in) and the most devine big brown eyes will always be the keeper of my heart. I don't believe everyone will be lucky enough to find that special dog. It took me over 30yrs (10 spent as a breeder and showie) and some different breeds before I met her. I still have some amazingly wonderful dogs in my life now, and one particular who has enriched my life immensely (probably more than my heart dog ever did). But just to look in her eyes and see her funny tail wiggle, would always hit me right in the heart.
  15. One thing I have learnt is that you never stop learning when it comes to breeding dogs. Just enjoy the ride!
  16. I live on the northside and use Big Dog Pet Foods at Lawnton. Can't help you with the southside though.
  17. I usually wait till most of the pups are gone, but usually no later than 10 weeks. This is explained clearly to the new owners and I let them know as soon as I have the papers back and tell them when to expect them in the mail. I always send them registered post just to be safe. If any are not sold at that age they are registered in my name. I'm not sure what you mean re the limit register. Do you mean for pups that are being sent by freight? Obvously those picking up a puppy will sign the form there and then. I have not had a problem having people send back paperwork. They do not get the pup until agreements are signed and returned.
  18. Agree with above. If you don't have protexin you can just as easily give them some natural yoghurt. They can lap it themselves if they are old enough, or given off your own finger if not. Great that you caught it early by the sounds of it.
  19. I am sure someone else on the forum posted an almost identical scenario about having a puppy coming back to life, so to speak. Couldn't tell you who it was though sorry.
  20. When I first started breeding I did, as that was the advice that was routinely given. My bitches regularly had copious milk from about 2 weeks prior to having pups. Pups were also oversized and caesars were common. I stopped feeding puppy food and found the pups to be a much better size when born and less trouble with overproduction of milk. Since having shar pei I have learnt much more about feeding my dogs and now feed much more raw food. For a while I cut out all dry food, and cooked rice instead, however I've gotten lazier and the little dry they get doesn't do them any harm and is great to have in emergencies, if I forget to defrost the meat. I do not change the diet of pregnant bitches at all now, just offer a little more as they progress, and then as they get very large, I will divide the meals into smaller portions, but feed her more often. The only time the bitch will specifically get puppy food is when the pups are getting weaned and she will clean up whatever is left over. No doubt however that if and when I ever have chi pups, all the rules will probably go flying out the window!
  21. Great to see you back online Jed. Saw you on TV - what a star! So sorry for the losses of your beautiful dogs and lovely to see the photos you have posted. They were truly lovely and a credit to you. Keep strong!
  22. I would encourage her to say no to the dogs based on the fact that they are from a byber instead of a good registered breeder or rescue. A bit of an insult buying her badly bred dogs instead of well bred dogs for her birthday. Perhaps you may at least win that battle, rather than concentrating on the breed aspect. May give her time to think and research more.
  23. I have had this happen on a few occasions, where the pup just has not seemed to gain weight on the scales, but was otherwise healthy and normal. I stopped weighing them in frustration, and just made sure they were feeding and looked fine. Once they started on solids they never looked back. I found the smallest ones were the keenest to eat the solids, while the fatties usually resist more. One like this was a girl I kept and she grew perfectly normal and healthy. Your pups are definately old enough to start on some chicken mince and yoghurt. Good luck with her and I hope she thrives too.
  24. So sorry for your loss! Must have been such a shock for you.
  25. If puppy does have entropion, then being so young your vet, or preferably one that is experienced, could try eye tacking: http://www.drjwv.com/faq/?view=12&name=Eye Tacking This is often performed on shar pei pups from as early as 3wks old. The earlier it is done the better. I don't think it is a common problem with labs, but not unheard of either.
