  1. It's interesting what can motivate different dogs I think prey driven dogs are born that way but it's also up to us to harness it and develop it. I've met loads of poodles who have decent prey drive and love to chase/tug - maybe her prey drive comes from the poodle in her??
  2. It's all prey drive and the dog learning to get drive satisfaction from the ball. All instinct
  3. TSD that pic of Ziggy in the police car always cracks me up!!
  4. I love this pic!! Gorgeous I would love one like this with Daisy Lovely - look at that focus!
  5. Daisy doing a down stay with a bag of training treats in front of her;
  6. I train both but I like to make sure Daisy has solid responses to voice commands only. I find the tone I give the command in makes a massive difference. She wasn't downing 100% reliably on voice only even though she knows the command word and then I realized if I asked the command like a question (so my voice as higher pitched) she would down reliably every single time.
  7. I had to try really hard to teach Daisy to catch treats. She learnt pretty quick that if she didn't catch them I would pick them up and she'd miss out  If she's too close to catch it (not often) I just hand it to her.
  8. I taught my dogs to catch treats so they don't drop on the floor.
  9. If you are in Melbourne there are quite a few excellent trainers here on DOL in that area - Erny, Cosmolo, Keplie-i and Nekhbet are all in VIC. http://www.prok9.com.au/ http://www.underdogtraining.com.au Keeping in mind that there is nothing wrong with discipline - 'negative reinforcement' can be anything as simple as a vocal correction like 'ah ah' or a removal of a reward
  10. I'm in for two smalls and two mediums
  11. Here's a very short vid from tonight; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCx_DMdTqzM I'm still trying to walk in a straight line I had my hands behind my back to force myself to stop fiddling with them! And to work on our voice control. Daisy was quite wide through a lot of it but I think a lot of that is my handling too. I need to work on my confidence
  12. JMO but I can't imagine squirting a dog in the face with a water pistol because they are resource guarding is ever an appropriate course of aciton... like others have said, resource guarding is natural and for me it's not a case of simply not standing for a dog resource guarding. My dogs don't resource guard because they were trained not to, because they respect me and understand that food is a resource I control and something they look to me for permission to have. They know that relinquishing a bone to me is not punishment, but something that is no big deal and can be rewarding for them. In most instances I don't think meeting aggression with aggression is the best way to handle things, because you give the dog the chance to step up and take you up on the challenge. Some dogs who get sprayed in the face with a water bottle will step it up and retaliate. If a dog is resource guarding and is particularly fearful or weak nerved you can make it worse because they learn every time you come near them when they have something high value you are going to spray them in the face.
  13. Let me know your address through PM and I'll send you one of my special rabbit fur tugs, haven't failed getting a dog to tug yet. Wow thanks Sas! Will PM you
  14. Thanks Ptolomy - yeah I would definitely have to go a bigger size for Mish, Daisy would be right with a small though I'm sure.
  15. Thanks Amps! Micha is very prey drive but doesn't tug. He goes nuts for his cuz toy so if I am using it when we are training, I bounce it on the ground and let him catch it as a reward or if I really want to reward him I throw it and let him chase it. I would much prefer to have him tug but he won't grab anything I'm holding. He's really food driven too so it's easy to get him going with food.
  16. Micha would go nuts for these! I would be interested in a mass order too How do you all use them to reward the dog? Do you throw it to them and let them have chase it/chew it so it squeaks?
  17. RIP Jan I met one of your beagles today and she had the proudest owners too.
  18. LOL That's the problem I've been having! I'm not very coordinated and I'm worried about tripping over her as she does come in nice and close in her fronts! LOL another thing on the list to practice
  19. Thanks everyone for the feedback re; returning to your dog in the CCD recall! Thanks Tassie. I'm not sure how else to return around her if I don't take a step to the side so I can walk down her side and back around? *goes off to watch a bunch of CCD obedience videos*
  20. Metro is more of the march up and down for an hour style club so not sure if that's what you're after, Levi.
  21. LOL I'm another one who has been going to Susan's practice for years. I have been going out to see Dr Kilmarten at Animal Options lately to get chiro work done, but he's waaaaaaay south side :D
  22. Ok quick question to do with recalls for CCD. When I return to Daisy I tend to take a step back and then walk around her. Someone mentioned to me the other night that you might only be allowed to take a step to the side and then return to them - does anyone know if there are rules about this? If I'm not being clear, you can see what I mean in the first vid I uploaded last night, when Daisy does a recall and I take a step back as I return around her.
