I mean the bag you take with you to training that you use to store all your gear!
-
What does everyone use for training bags?? I have a terrible green bag I use, Daisy knows it's the training bag and that it often has food in it. I had her off leash at training one night - I had just finished working her and was putting her away. She spotted a green coles bag across the field that belonged to someone else and shot off to raid it! And it had HEAPS of food in it that belonged to someone else I was mortified!

How did you hear about Project 200 Ptolomy? I didn't realise you were following it! We'll have updates on our FB page, website and forum over the next few weeks/months too For anyone else who is interested http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages/Project-200.html Really excited to see how you and Ella go Nic!!

Training should begin from the day you bring your puppy home IMO! This doesn't mean formal training like going to puppy school but teaching your puppy what you expect of it and giving it lots of controlled socialisation is crucial between 8 - 12 weeks.

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts Just a little update, my poor little Beaj had to have a bath today as she was still covered in oil from her little "adventure" last night, she wasn't very impressed! Aside from the indignity of having a bath after such a traumatic event she's doing well aside from a bit of soreness and swelling

Oh, accidents can definitely happen, but now we've had this happen we simply won't feed any bones like that be hollowed out like that again. We'll keep feeding bones of course, but will take more caution in which ones we feed

She's adorable SK!!!

Hmmm. I often find instructors will say things like 'just ignore it' when they have no idea what the owners should actually do to address the behaviour. If I had a dog like that in one of my classes I would be pulling the owners aside after class and spending some time with them one on one to show them ways to address the behaviour. If I had an instance where I didn't know how the behaviour should be addressed I'd tell the owners I'd do some research and find out for them or I'd refer them to someone who was more experienced than I was.

Perse I actually said I was shocked that this is the first time she's even had to go to the emergency vet considering all the things she's eaten over the years Thanks for all your get well wishes for my beagle! She's ok today, she is on soft food only for the next couple of days. We had some pikelets so Daisy got one as a treat this morning (anyone who knows the EB knows she has a major love of baked goods!)

I've fed raw for a few years now and this has never happened to me before, though after spending last night at the emergency vet with Daisy I see how easily it could happen. We'd given the dogs a raw osso bucco bone each to munch on for dinner. All of a sudden I heard this horrible crying sound and I rushed over to find Daisy had eaten all the meat off and gotten the bone caught around her bottom jaw. She was majorly distressed, clawing at her face, hitting her head against any surface to try and get it off. She let me hold her still while we covered it in oil to try and get it off but we quickly realised it was completely stuck on and we took her to the emergency vet to have it removed. Poor D was super super stressed and freaking out, the vet put her under and took just under an hour to remove the bone. She's fine now - her mouth is a bit cut up and swollen and sore. I am just so glad we were home when it happened. I will never feed any kind of bone that can be hollowed out like that again. I managed to get a pic while we were waiting for the vet, so I could show everyone what can happen when you feed these kinds of bones

Maybe in WA, but I don't know of any club in QLD that doesn't allow check chains, I would suggest majority of the clubs in Oz still allow the use of check chains.

Fair enough, but in that 'getting to know you' period while trust is established (or not) I would much prefer a gentler hand. I concede that Weez is probably at the extreme end being both a breed that is known for shutting down under harsh tratment and a rescue dog. My approach personally is trying to talk to as many trainers as I can and absorb what's helpful for me & mine and discard the rest. Just one client's perpective tho of course That a behaviourist or trainer might use corrections with some dogs doesn't mean they don't have a "gentle hand", are harsh on dogs or aren't experienced or very successful in working with timid and nervous dogs - at least that has not been my experience There's a lot you can do to make behaviour worse using "PR only methods" too, I think it's a real myth that "kinder" methods can cause less damage when used incorrectly. ETA: I don't think of it as a "which is worse" thing - I simply would not hire a trainer I thought could stuff my dog up regardless of the methods they use. I don't see less risk in hiring a crappy PR trainer vs a crappy trainer who uses corrections, I think both have the potential to do damage and that is something I would always avoid. I have always been lucky with the behaviourial trainers I've hired/worked with though I know of crappy PR trainers who have told owners their dogs are better off PTS, I'd consider that pretty detrimental to the dog

Where Are Your Dogs During The Day
huski replied to dandybrush's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Personally I am not a fan of citronella collars at all - this article has a section on them that explains why I am not a fan http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages.php?pageid=24 -
I think taking time off is one of the worst things you can do. IMO you should teach your puppy the day it comes home that the picture you paint for it today is what the rest of it's life will be like. If you work F/T, get your puppy in that routine immediately.

I know Erin, I can't believe they are five already. I remember when you joined DOL not long after me and we talked about our naughty puppies every day (well, I talked about my naughty puppy, yours were angels  ). Please no more health scares! She did. I tried to video it to show all of you how happy she was to have a donut, but when I put it down and told her to stay while I got the camera ready... she ate it. So I tried again with a second donut, but alas it appears the allure of baked cinnamon-y goodness is just too much for the beagle (even a relatively well obedience trained one) to resist. I can't be mad though, it IS her birthday after all I'll have to ask K9Pro to tell me how to proof her focus around donuts

Daisy thanks you all for her super birthday wishes :D I KNOW! I can hardly believe it's been so long. Thanks Tassie, that's so sweet of you to say. LOL hardly  Hehe, I can loan her to you whenever you like Kiesha, you may change your mind on the 'getting a beagle' part though!

It's Evil Beagle Day today :D Daisy turns FIVE years old today - I can hardly believe it! I think the dogs that challenge you the most are the dogs you learn the most from and I am so grateful that I have Daisy to learn from (though sometimes, I still want to kill her... ). Happy birthday to my Evil Beagle As a baby beagle with Mr Micha :D All grown up now The EB in a tutu... totally dignified n stuff Must... get... noms Food being held out under her nose... no thanks, I'd rather work for mum :D :D

Dogs that resource guard aren't always "dominant" dogs. Even the lowest members of a pack will display resource guarding. Dogs resource guard because they don't want to lose an item they value, you need to teach them relinquishing these items won't end in a loss, simply taking items of value from them will reinforce their fear that having you near their food etc means you will take it away from them.

Strauss is so cute! I've never had (or seen) a short CCD pattern. Every QLD judge I know will do a position in every pace, so there is no difference in the length or level of difficulty of heelwork in CCD, Novice and Open (apart from CCD being on lead). I wish we'd have shorter heel patterns for each class like they do in other states, as I think it's better for greener dogs (and handlers).

Super keen! Doubt that I'd be the right look, but can't wait to see the pics you do though!!
