Heartworm in Melbourne - I remember dogs testing positive at the vets where I worked ...

Thanks ,folks - he could be so infuriating ...but I'd gladly have it all back ;)

I think Grover would like that ..to be part of his favourite beach :) that's a lovely photo.

oh, hell. you must be shattered. You know what tho? His body chose the time & place ... at home with you, when you hadn't to worry about any hard decisions or treatments ... if dogs could choose , that would be it -second to just sleeping while it happened - to stop breathing, and be held tight for those last seconds ...where they belong-listening to your heart .. Thinking of you, and smiling at that muddy-faced little fella , who is crossing teh bridhe wrapped in a blanket of your love & care ... be kind to YOU now -

Once again - asking questions/researching helps pet owners be informed, and better able to work with vets in getting the best treatment for their pets :) The life cycle of heartworm is such that there are no adult worms present for some months ... and it is AFAIK unsafe to treat with a preventative if adult worms are present have a look here CLICK CLICK

..If you are ever unsure of what your dog is taking ..just google it ;) Sometimes mistakes are made, or information is not passed on - typing in the name of a drug will let you access all sorts of info! if the vet told you the wormer was an 'allwormer'..and that it was also a heartworm preventative , and it isn't , then yes, you were mislead .

I don't think cattle would be/could be kept in a crush for the weeks needed after surgery - I would guess a small indoor pen with all mod.cons. at first, then a yard, then a bigger space if needed. There would be LOTS of pain relief,Cattle are pretty stoic ..and I think would manage better than horses?

No answer to that , unless you know the chemical used, and its actions , etc . Find out the chemical name/s then look up its Material Safety Data Sheet online .

After Pts Behaviour/trainer Help Please?

I try & let other animals see/sniff the dead one . That way they KNOW ....it might take several minutes ..but they will know that their mate is not there anymore..... -
While i'm sorry you had to have them euth'd ..their lives were much compromised to start with , poor little babies. I am so glad their mum is doing well, and the other 3 appear to be happy and thriving - you've done well.
-
I am not saying that dogs which run/sniff etc are monsters, or undisciplined or behaving 'wrongly', at all ...every single dog owner has a different way of interacting with their dog/s To each his own :) Dogs I had in the city certainly had their swimming/mud puddle times/chasing ducks/playing -zoomies-on-the-beach times ..but walking was working ..not toileting/playing :) .guess it was all my years of training guide dogs , who needed to concentrate on what was ahead of them ,and what their owner's body language was ..no room for distractions ...at all!
-
Agree, we are out for a walk, for exercise, they can play all they like at home. When I was in the city ..walks were walks ..no toileting/sniffing etc unless I said . free running was different ...walks on lead were not for mucking around ....we were both there to do a brisk walk ;) as for feeding - my vet used to prescribe brown rice/different meats and veges for older dogs with arthritis ... I remember one lady with a little poodle loved the difference it made to her dog, so she went onto that food as well, and was very happy :)

he's happy and spolied , and very much loved ...what more is there ?
-
this can also be a fear/uncertainty reaction - he is indoors/cannot assess the danger level ... so the growl is based on this uncertainty .......maybe. From your posting, it sounds as if he does need a decent assessment , so you can then know exactly in what direction to head. JANE HARPER is often mentioned favourably on D O L ..maybe contact her?
