Is It Safe To Give Dog Human Anti-histamines?
persephone replied to StaceyB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It may well be the grass...but can also be chemicals that may have been used in/on the property..anyting from carpet cleaner to insecticide ..or something elese growing... Best of luck with it -

May I add a very important thing... If your pup throws a tantrum lasting 3 hours.......THEN you go and either chastise or comfort... Guess what? NEXT tantrum will last 3 hours and longer.... cos they know that if they persevere someone will EVENTUALLY come Receiving attention is such a powerful reward..............

Fly... I second The Spotted Devil's comment about some Vets and their (lack of ) knowledge of animal behaviour :D The are often not the best behaviourists. Your pup barking to come in... I'm not sure..but he probably knows that EVENTUALLY he will be let in so he will continue to yip. He needs to realise that YOU are the giver of all treasures!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU give the food YOU decide when he is to be in YOU dole out praise ONLY when he is being good etc etc. To that end...when you feed him... try this exercise... http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=64101

Hi... there are people here who can explain this heaps better :p Your pup is only a baby still...well done for getting him to toilet outside so far! :D You may need to take him out more often... When he goes indoors..do you actually reprimand him AS he is doing it? To be effective, you MUST catch him in the act...at the very start if possible!!!!!!!!!! Ten seconds afterwards is too late My recommendation would be, if you catch him in the act to just approach , scoop him up , and take him outside SILENTLY Hopefully he finishes what he started OUTSIDE..and gets praised shouting and handclapping would not be what I would use... the noise can startle a youngster, and also evoke the exact response you are getting. Contain him to one room ,if you can...or attach him to a long lead around your waist..that way, you know the signs....

Hmm..think I've found my new sig!!! Thanks, Steve :D

If it is just a tear of the tougher outer 'skin' ..and isn't hanging off or bleeding profusely..and if she isn't limping badly... wash it well, put some betadine on, and rest a few days. If it is seeping blood..looks deep , or seems very sore if you apply pressure, and/or if she is quite wary of using that foot..see your vet

Well done. :D She sounds content now.......... .except watch her with a wheat bag... i would worry about a pup chewing it ... Here I am lucky! I use bricks heated on the slow combustion heater wrapped in the sleeve of a WOOL jumper... they stay warm all night, and cannot leak or be chewed.

Ohh.. he has a beautiful soft face........... that's a nice thing, a scrap-book :D

The best training is ,as said, boundary training. Guide Dogs get taught a form of traffic avoidance...it takes a long time, and requires much work....and the dog uses its knowledge always with a human present. Maybe you should be training your HUMANS to shut the doors/gates ?

here ya go... and I wiped his eyes for you, too

Sorry about your boy... RIP Blittz.

Klattsy... may I suggest that the 'doing laps around the yard, chasing the neighbour's dog, etc' which you do with your pups may NOT be the most effective at putting them in a CALM, RELAXED state of mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I repeat, what these two need is a LOT of WALKING on leash..so they HAVE to focus and concentrate....therefore they are mentally and physically exhausted!!! Games are fine..but as a reward for good behaviour, or as a fill-in. Their 'main diet' of exercise should be in the form of WORK The more you hype them up around the house, the more they learn that YOu approve of this wild behaviour, and that it is the norm ... IMO, anyway :D Not meaning to sound as if I'm lecturing, just trying to explain how it looks to me .

A few things quickly. 1) Dogs like your two are now teens...full of energy and a desire to explore the world!! Without a couple of LONG , on-lead 'concentrate on what you're doing' walks a day, and a variation of other activity..different toys..large bones, they WILL look to what is readily available to fulfil their needs :D 2) Dogs will dig holes to sleep in. Dogs are curved..they also like feeling comfortable They therefore dig in sand to make a soft and contoured bed! our working dogs sleep in holes of their design most of the time 3) Well done on making the shelter. Are you in an area which is warm all year? The reason I ask is that, at dog-height, there is NO barrier to a cold draft, if you have them ..... and in a bed, or on a trampoline, it may get very cool! When you are making doggy things..think of only being a couple of feet high, and work from there 4) I have the horrible suspicion that the barking will increase...for several reasons. The dogs will be outdoors...smelling,hearing, and seeing things. They will be awake and looking for something to do They will probably play together and get excited..maybe yapping, barking. All I can suggest is that you work very hard on tiring them out, making sure they have plenty of MENTAL stimulation, somehwere soft to sleep....maybe put in a sandpit for them? plenty of chewy /interactive toys... bones, kongs, bike tyres/soccerballs....although running around on that gravel all the time would be not really comfortable on their feet.... having two youngsters is hard work...I wish you luck.

Haven't heard this one... have you considered acupuncture/chiro? My old Mitchell used to do this...the (my) chiro found that if he worked some spots around his shoulders/chest it helped enormously!! Mitchell's was stress related.

She needs to see the vet asap. we can only guess.... Hope the Vet can get her more comfortable very soon.

If they are to remain friends..some supervised together time is a good idea.. just for a while

I would be phoning a vet, at least. Do NOT give her anything by mouth. Has she eaten recently? Is her stomach swollen? has she diarrhoea as well? Is she otherwise OK? Have you taken her temp? Could she have eaten anything poisonous? Keep her quiet... do you have any Rescue Remedy? A few drops on her gums..OR on a bare bit of skin every 20 minutes will help settle her... But please phone a vet.....
